Some experiments later, I found out that the freezes are triggered by
cpufreq switches. As long as the ondemand governor is active, it freezes
on every frequency switch. When I lock the CPU frequency e.g. to 2.80
GHz, I can work fine without any freezes, and XRandR works again.

I'm experiencing similar problems with the b43 driver. It will often
connect when I load the b43 module (but not always) but soon afterward
it will drop the connection. When the connection drops, dmesg reports

Be aware that osgcal currently FTBFS on i386:

I have exactly the same problem (Acer TravelMate 662, Intel 855GM
chipset).
The progress bar screen on shutdown does not appear and shutdown fails.
On my laptop the HDD LED stays on forever. On startup orphaned inodes
