Yes, it's interesting that some programs do some things correctly, but
when they are starting, for the first time they frequently make a
mistake in them. But if u reload that, it's ok again. Same as google
chrome when loading pages from the last session and some ohter programs
doing strange things
As someone noted above, I've also observed that removing and re-adding
the notification area will generally restore the proper icons.
I notice that this has been seen in both Karmic and Lucid, by various
people.

This is also happening to me when I first log on. I'm attaching an image
of the top right of my screen, after logging on to my Dell 10v netbook.
I'm running the standard Gnome version of Karmic, not a netbook remix.

I re-logged-in again and now I have 2 battery icons right after logging
in - then a fraction of a minute later I have network-manager, battery,

This is still happening on my Dell netbook with the standard (not
netbook) version of Karmic installed, updated through this morning. It
just happened to me after I logged off and logged back in to Gnome.

I seemed to have gained this today after upgrading this machine from Karmic to
Lucid beta.
Machine has Intel graphics and is a laptop (and answers to the name davros).
I've included a screen shot. I'd say there are 3 distinct things happening:

remove the notification area from the panel and add it again and you're

This annoying bug affects me also since the release of Karmic. After
startup, in 80% times the Notification area is messed up, icons are
duplicated and sometimes the sound is muted.
NVidia FX5200 video card here, if it has anything to do with it. I never
had this issue on previous Ubuntu releases.

The same here - the sound volume icon is duplicated and shown instead of
nm-applet icon.
killall gnome-applet or killall nm-applet; nm-applet fix it so I can start
using wireless.

I have the same problem with empty space instead of Network Manager
applet icon. But it appears only when I'm resuiming from
suspend/hibernate mode. Ubuntu 9.10 x64 clean install, NVidia GeForce

The problem solved for me today, upgraded my GFX card (old nvidia with usage of
nvidia driver version 173).
The new card supports the latest drivers by ubuntu (version 185) and since this
update the problem has gone.
So in my case, it is/was nvidia driver related.

I am not sure of this, but I believe this might be an Nvidia driver
issue. I first saw this happen when using ARCH when they had updated to
the 185 series drivers and saw it continue in the 190 series drivers.
One can work around the problem if after start up( or login to gnome)

Using the guest login I didn't see the behavior so I cleaned up .gconf,
.local and .gnome2 in my home folder - which is on a different partition
so it contains many old settings - and now the problem is gone. I cannot

I am still seeing this bug with RC and updated packages.
After login, the notification area shows wrong icons.
In the attached screenshot (after-login.png), for instance, the power
management icon is displayed twice while the NetworkManager icon is not shown
at all.
