The same here - the sound volume icon is duplicated and shown instead of nm-applet icon. killall gnome-applet or killall nm-applet; nm-applet fix it so I can start using wireless. Restarting sometimes helps - but it is really random behaviour I have 9.10 Ubuntu - installed from scratch so I do not think I have problems with conf files.
