Disabling the on-board Via-Rhine NIC and using the 3COM 3C905B PCI NIC has resolved the problem. No timeouts and solid performance. Disabling ACPI in the BIOS seems to be a red herring. Therefore, to me suggests a driver bug which needs an urgent fix especially as this chip-set is quite common. I
