ToastBusters, you're dead right - upgrading to the Debian packages
listed fixes the problem in Ubuntu 8.10 and probably in 8.04 as well as
this has been "broken" since then! XSANE now works really well.

A few things to note, you also need http://packages.debian.org/sid/libs
/libsane-extras otherwise libsane reports an dependency problem.

The install order is

update-inetd
sane-utils
libsane-extras
libsane

Lets hope the Ubuntu team are equally on the ball.
