Ever since 6.10, Ubuntu has not liked the SATA chipset that is in the
laptop.

The error is
Check root=bootarg cat /proc/cmdline

Alert! /dev/sda6 does not exist. Dropping to a shell! (this was
originally a uuid, but I have been messing with it to try and get it working)

The error occurs on the Tecra S3 Laptop right after the first reboot,
when Unbuntu 7.04 Live CD has completed the install and tells you to
remove the disk and reboot. The system will come up on its own and then
hangs at that point.

Hey folks. this bug is a symptom of a problem that is way higher up the
Debian food chain. the fix for this needs to come from the Debian
distro folks.
If 7.04 does not work for you stick with 6.10, it's stable and it
works. I have no idea whether or not this issue will be fixed by 7.10.

As I said in previous posts, this is now a kernel issue which Ubuntu
needs to deal with.

I don't know how to answer that one, I know that this computer I am
using now has 6 pata drives and 2 sata drives in it and 2 of the pata
drives are on a pci addon card.
If you cannot get pata working in 7.04 there may be additional issues
with that particular kernel that they released with it.

if you have a WD drive, go to the WD website and download one of their
ISO's that can check your drive. You may have a bad drive.
Also to try is one of the older kernel versions that appear in GRUB when
you start up. That worked for me on my laptop.
