I don't know how to answer that one, I know that this computer I am using now has 6 pata drives and 2 sata drives in it and 2 of the pata drives are on a pci addon card.
If you cannot get pata working in 7.04 there may be additional issues with that particular kernel that they released with it. one thing to check is modprobe and do an internet search to see what kernel modules your chipsets require.
