** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: initramfs-tools

With the latest version of Gutsy when booting from the alternate version
the system cannot find the SATA hard drive on my Toshiba Tecra S3
laptop. The chipset that the laptop uses is the ICH6M chipset.

- I have tried to run the following during the basic boot process for the
alternate CD
+ I have tried to run the following during the basic boot process for the
alternate CD according to http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=519229
  Crtl-Alt F2
  modprobe -r ata_piix
  modprobe ahci
  modprobe ata_piix
  Crtrl-alt F1

follow the rest of the instructions on getting the alt distro running.

everything works fine until it hits the Disk Detection stage and cannot
locate any hard drives. trying any of the the ide_ drivers do not work,
neither do any of the scsi drivers.

  According to the http://linux-ata.org/driver-status.html#sw_support
site, AHCI and ata_piix should support the ICH6M chipset.

+ I somehow got this working once by adding libata, but I am unable to
+ sucessfully repeat this. The system successfully installed the OS but
+ remains unbootable at this point.
+
I am unsure what else to do at this point as Ubuntu 6.10 works fine on
  this system.
