One easy change that seems to largely fix the problem for me is to
increase the "Edge Reveal Timeout" to 1000 (one second). This pretty
much eliminates Unity jumping open when I don't want it, at the price of
a small, occasional wait.
The main bad thing about this is that it's poor user interface

With the Unity interface in oneiric, every time I move the cursor near
the left edge of the screen, the task bar pops out and steals the focus
from the application I'm using. As far as I can tell, there is no way
to alter this behavior.

This is currently occurring on about 40% of resumes for me (ubuntu
10.04), on a Dell Inspiron 1420N (sold with ubuntu). Just to clarify,
for me, I always see either behavior (a), or I see (b) followed by (c).

see that rhythmbox is starting a new thread every couple of minutes more

Feisty boot fail "can't access tty" IDE SAT
I tried booting with *both* hard drives disconnected, to test whether
the (software) RAID filesystem present on them was causing my problems.
The first time I tried it (no break=top, no "modprobe piix"), it booted
up! Always skeptical, I tried it again, and it failed, just as before.
