I'm also seeing this (w/Inspiron 1420), starting recently.  I guess in
the past it's worked most of the time--I suppose 2-10% failure might be
what I'm seeing, too.

magaio: One reason is because the makers of all of this hardware are
doing a half-assed job of sticking with the standards (when they exist)
and do a lot of corner-cutting.  They can make it work anyway under
Windows, fixing things in the drivers, but this doesn't work under
Linux, unless they specifically undertake to make sure it works there,
which they generally don't bother to do.  So, basically, it's a problem
of economics.
