Jerome, if you ever get a chance, visit the Cincinnati Zoo.
The male silverback (Colossus by name) is one of the largest
in captivity and is stunning. The enclosure has a few vines
at the back to give green, rather than grey, backgrounds.
Colossus has three places he likes to hang out. The best f
Nope, that ain't it. I've waited a total of 24 hours now
for ONE tiger shot and haven't fired yet. Many animals
prefer shade, which puts me, all too often, in shutter
speeds of 1/8 to 1/30 second, with all the attendant
focusing difficulties of an f8 mirror. I need a long
lens to help isolate ba
Good advice, Jerome.
As an aside, I used to do a bit of zoo photography with a 135. Sure it was
too short for some of the smaller animals, but with a little patience I got
quite a few good shots. I would think a 300 would be adequate for most zoo
shots. Also should work for a lot of game preserve
Great photo essay Jerome. You have a great imagination, are a fine writer and
you captured the Gorillas with great intimacy. It's obvious you spent time
getting to know your subjects...

I'm not sure if I follow that, Herb. Not sure if you're saying wait to buy, or
don't wait. In any

That's exactly what I have been wanting to say...
You can spend all the money in the world for a super duper telephoto lens or
you can save your money and have some patience and still get the shot. I'm not
saying a long lens isn't sometimes necessary, but patience does not cost you
anything but
Lon,
by the way, I meant no offense by my previous email (not sure how touchy you
are, so I thought I'd clear the air ahead of time). I just meant to say that,
now that I take a better listen at your current situation, there are tons of
options that fall in between a 500mm Mirror lens with IS0

I want, and a 2x puts me right back at f8, where my
mirror lens is. No help. Need faster lens to start
with.

Apart from the 300/2.8 you could also look into the A* 600/5.6 if you really need the

I don't find it to be too terrible, but it is not lightweight. If you are
going through zoos it should be quite easy to carry - the terrain is
usually pretty tame.
It has not been that big of a prob

Will a Bogen 3221 tripod be adequate for it?
And how about the 300mm f2.8 lenses?
REPLY:
Both these lenses are quite awkward in my opinion and a 400/2.8 is extremely awkward
for a 400mm lens. A Bogen 3221 is marginal at best;
