I'm not surprised the NLS player would have trouble with a USB attached hard
drive. Since it started playing OK, I wouldn't think it would be the size.
I'm guessing latency is more of an issue. Just speculation on my part
though.

That is not really true.
You can use Wave Pad to edit an *.mp3 file.
These days, Wave Pad comes with
of a USB flash drive.
Once they're on an NLS cartridge or USB flash drive, then you can play them
on your NLS player.

it. I've heard the player will take flash drives up to 64 gig, but it would
move between files more slowly with that large a drive. With all the playing
