Loads of speaker sets have secondary inputs on them. I have a set of
Klipsch promedia 2.1's, which are rather nice. They have a control pod
with two 1/8th inch inputs. I've also seen several from Logitech, Altec
and others which have secondary inputs.
I run all my stuff through a cheap little

you can take a 1 khz sign
wave, copy it to the clipboard, then mix it over itself with either the source
or destination inverted, both at 0 db. If you've done things properly, you'll
get a file of absolute silence for the duration of the tone that used to be
there.

I personally like the AKG k44 and k55's, they can be found at
www.musiciansfriend.com for $19 and $29, respectively.
They're very durable as well.
Also, although they are a good deal more expensive and have a
quarter-inch plug rather than a 1/8th/3.5mm, the Audio Technica ATH-m40's are
great
r unresponsive about itself.
I've found that the Direct Sound output plugin works far better under
XP, although I don't really like the defaults for the plugin all that much.

Garry: sounds to me like you've got a soundmax chip, maybe an AD-1985,
or what Intel likes to call "high definition audio" which is another
variant of a soundmax chip.
. Those chips tend to hang out around nominal level, even when the
line-in volume is down all the way. I

Is that a Soundmax AD-1980 codec? If so, then I bet what's actually
happening is the card isn't muting, it's just dropping by about -36 DB
or so. If it's anything like one of the computers I have here, you can
still tell there's something there if you crank your speakers up by a
lot, but really tha
sound card that already has speakers on it's output,
assuming you have a line in available (usually not the case with
laptops).
Also, many multimedia speaker sets have two inputs on them for just this
purpose.

Actually, the 2GB limit is still present in the actual specification for
the .wav format. You can save in a few other uncompressed formats
though, such as .w64, which doesn't have this limit.
