How to Best Access PDF Files

Hi All, I just received my first pdf file. I loaded it into Preview, but could not figure out how to access the text. Also, if it is an image, is there a way I can perform OCR on it without attaching a scanner? Is there a version of Acrobat Reader for the Mac which is worth accessing? Thank you.
