Hi Mary,
HDMI has several versions, depending on how old your receiver is it

if you are having a hard time getting optical out to work you probably need to
select that input on your reciever. often the optical connection defaults to

Hi,
I connected a set of RCA cables from my TV to my home theater system as
I couldn't get the optical out working. Only disadvantage to this is
the TV must be on.

Some receivers though don't decode that correctly so you need the optical link
or the coax SPDIF deal.
On my Denon receiver you can grab the surround audio right off the HDMI as well
as use the receiver as a switcher to redirect both audio and video
Michael,
You asked what surround receiver we have. It is an NAD. I can't recall the
model number just now. But my husband read in the manual some very specific
language about how you have to connect an optical digital cable along with the

setting that can make the reciever ignore the hdmi audio in favor of another

I think this might be specific to your model of receiver. HDMI definitely
carries audio and video.

It is possible to connect the HDMI to the television and have the optical audio
go to the receiver. I don't know if that would effect the quality of the
signal though...

What? HDMI cables do in fact carry sound.

Regarding having the hdmi and optical cables connected at the same time, the
manual for our surround receiver specifically says that the hdmi cable only
carries video not audio, so if you want audio through the surround receiver,
you have to connect the digital optical cable. Cery annoying, espe

Hi,
I was curious if you can have hdmi connected to the TV and the optical audio
connection to a receiver. I know hdmi carries audio as well as video and wonder
if there could be any issues with this configuration.

Hi Justin,
I have not noticed any difference in the quality of the audio from Mac to apple
tv, as opposed to Mac to airport express. Admittedly, the speakers that are
attached to the receiver that has the a tv connection are not the most
wonderful speakers in the world, but they're decent. So I
I'm running my Apple TV through the optical audio out, and the speech
is definitely choppy for me as well. That is a real bummer, as the
audio from the tv is definitely a no go.
On a related note, has anyone using the new Apple TV noticed any
loss in audio quality when streaming from the Mac?
Thanks, Soren, for your comment on the choppy speech issue being a result of
using an optical cable into a surround receiver. That's really disheartening,
since connecting just an hdmi cable gives no sound at all. I think I'll call
Apple and see if I can speak with somebody, because this problem
Hi.
I think this happens when you connect the optical cable to your surround
receiver. I don't have an Apple tv, but I have experienced this with other
devices which have an opticle output.

Mary,
I don't have my cable yet for the tv I really want to hook the apple tv to, but
it is hooked up to another tv and I have no problem with choppy speech either
via the apple remote or the iPhone app.
I'm not experienced enough yet to know if I can play a dvd from my mac to the
tv.
Actuall
maybe you can get the remote early...

I have the optical cable going into a surround receiver. It is a medium length
cable, 6 feet. I could use a shorter one, but that was what they had in stock.
You're suppose to be able to put the hdmi cable through the surround receiver
as well, but we don't get video that way, so the hdmi is con
Hi.
Do you connect the HDMI cable directly to your tv or does the sound come
through a receiver? I have a surround receiver which cut off the sound while
using digital sound inputs and outputs. I don't know why. If you only connect
the apple tv directly to your tv, it might be because the cable
Chris,
I did find apple tv listed in Itunes in the remote speakers section, and
airfoil also sees it just as it sees airport expresses, so it would appear that
you can at least send audio to the device, or I should say through the device,
from a Mac. I wonder if the video is picked up by airfoil
Mary,
The Apple TV is one way sharing, i.e. the Apple TV can see your iTunes and
iPhoto library and stream them, but the Mac does not stream anything from the
Apple TV box. The Apple TV box has 8gb of storage, but this storage is only
used for applications and buffering video content from iTun
