HDMI has audio supported as part of the spec. Some receivers though don't decode that correctly so you need the optical link or the coax SPDIF deal. On my Denon receiver you can grab the surround audio right off the HDMI as well as use the receiver as a switcher to redirect both audio and video

what reciever do you have? i have never found a home theater reciever that did not take the audio from the hdmi connection, it is however sometimes a menu setting that can make the reciever ignore the hdmi audio in favor of another source. it has to take the hdmi audio in order to work with mult

I'm running my Apple TV through the optical audio out, and the speech is definitely choppy for me as well. That is a real bummer, as the audio from the tv is definitely a no go. On a related note, has anyone using the new Apple TV noticed any loss in audio quality when streaming from the Mac?

Thanks, Soren, for your comment on the choppy speech issue being a result of using an optical cable into a surround receiver. That's really disheartening, since connecting just an hdmi cable gives no sound at all. I think I'll call Apple and see if I can speak with somebody, because this problem

I have the optical cable going into a surround receiver. It is a medium length cable, 6 feet. I could use a shorter one, but that was what they had in stock. You're suppose to be able to put the hdmi cable through the surround receiver as well, but we don't get video that way, so the hdmi is con

Chris, I did find apple tv listed in Itunes in the remote speakers section, and airfoil also sees it just as it sees airport expresses, so it would appear that you can at least send audio to the device, or I should say through the device, from a Mac. I wonder if the video is picked up by airfoil

Mary, The Apple TV is one way sharing, i.e. the Apple TV can see your iTunes and iPhoto library and stream them, but the Mac does not stream anything from the Apple TV box. The Apple TV box has 8gb of storage, but this storage is only used for applications and buffering video content from iTun
