I have the optical cable going into a surround receiver. It is a medium length 
cable, 6 feet. I could use a shorter one, but that was what they had in stock. 
You're suppose to be able to put the hdmi cable through the surround receiver 
as well, but we don't get video that way, so the hdmi is connected to the tv, 
but the audio cable is through the receiver, so we get better sound. The tv 
speakers are crummy, to say the least. How did you resolve your choppy speech 
problem?
