Mary, The Apple TV is one way sharing, i.e. the Apple TV can see your iTunes and iPhoto library and stream them, but the Mac does not stream anything from the Apple TV box. The Apple TV box has 8gb of storage, but this storage is only used for applications and buffering video content from iTunes servers.
As far as I am aware you can only stream music and video content held within your itunes library or direct from iTunes servers over the Internet. You are not able to stream DVD content from your Mac. However you can stream video content from an iOS device such as an iPhone or iPod Touch.
