HDMI has audio supported as part of the spec. Some receivers though don't decode that correctly so you need the optical link or the coax SPDIF deal.
On my Denon receiver you can grab the surround audio right off the HDMI as well as use the receiver as a switcher to redirect both audio and video sources to the correct display.
