Anyone got a method for roman numeral string
ad [g] on the staff, and
the relevant fingerings [4 above 1] above the staff, but no roman numeral [II]
underneath.
The same code did, however, give me my roman numerals under single notes. What
am I missing?

Shouldn't StringNumber be able to do this already? It's very common to
indicate strings on violin, viola, etc. with Roman numerals.

line \include roman.ly after the version line.
As for the rest, I would have to see your code to see why it was acting
strange.

matching \sustainOn for the last measure. It worked in the first ending
though, which I thought was a little odd since they were both in the
\alternative tag.
Eventually I gave up on that and let the pedal start on the first node of the
last measure, and end on the first rest.
