Ok I did do some damage to mine with the very hard off field landing, but, I
think less damage than if I had fixed gear. I rebuild them, and I'm adding a
nice fairing on the gear. The cool factor of the retracts is there also.
Everybody is different and like different
My reason was that after the gear collapsed on me for the 3rd time, I was
convinced. I am a bit hard headed, but beat me hard enough and long enough
and I get the message.

A gear-up landing will ruin your day, your prop, your crankshaft, and
probably a lot more. Chances of doing that are high enough without the
retracts' propensity to fold up or otherwise fail in some way. That reason
alone was enough for me to use fixed gear on mine...

The fixed Diehl is the lightest one between the Grove single bar type, the
retract, and the Diehl.
The Grove is more simple to install, heavier than the Diehl and more
expensive than the Diehl.
You can't go wrong with the Diehl fixed gear. I replaced 2 retracts with
fixed and you could not pay m

Why yes I have and I have them here on my floor where you can put them on a
scale and weigh them, the springbar alone is very heavy. I did weigh them a
while back just to compare and it was sizeable.

Really? Has anyone weighed a set of each and compared? I'll bet it's not a
huge difference. I could be wrong, I've not weighed them, I don't know.
Maybe someone who has done it can "weigh in" on the matter...

If the end of your wing stub is open, it will slide out through that opening
after you disconnect everything from the spring bar. Un-bolt everything from
the spring bar, everything. Then you just have to slide it out of the opening
at the end of the wing stub on either end. If there is no ope
Thank you,
Will give it a shot.

Hole-saw an access hole in the end of each stub, facing out (not down)
You will need the holes anyway, for access to install diehl gear

What is the least invasive way to remove the spring on the retract gear set
up?
I am switching out to the Deihl conventional gear, but don't want to tear
out the entire wing stub.
Is it best to cut the bar out in pieces or remove the botto
