release notes to
or about two weeks, so it is now

No. /etc/modutils is für 2.4. If you use 2.6, change /etc/modprobe.d,
and make sure /etc/modprobe.conf is no
between Grub and Lilo. Maybe you have to select expert mode to
make that choice available.
I am also not sure when exactly your Sarge hang - at the Grub screen, or
the moment you tried to boot the system from Grub. If the latter is the
case, then it is maybe a kernel problem.

No, it isn't. It is only in the bf24 kernel. The other 2.4.18 kernels
are extremely modular - that is why you need the initrd. It is not
o different cards with different drivers,
add the driver for the first device (e.g. eth0) first, and the second
driver below the first. That way the names of the interfaces won't be
switched.

MinShowUID=1000

Looks like you should either reinstall the kernel you use:
apt-get --reinstall kernel-image-whatever
or reinstall the boot loader by running lilo. If you need more help,
give us more information, e.g. the error messages you get when you try

If the Debian packages are unsigned, you should configure debsig not to
