Because you only have to download some more KB (which hardly counts considering the size of Java itself), and after that you have to run three commands. One for installing the converter, one for the conversion of the package, another one to install the two java packages. The package management will automatically create symlinks for the jave plugin for different browsers and for several binaries like java, javac, javadoc /and/ their man pages. If you install Java manually, you have to run the installer script, edit /etc/profile, and, if you want to use the plugin, create the symlinks for it. This will of course only make Java available in shells that actually read /etc/profile. If you use additional shells or some window manager, you will have to edit their startup files as well.
