The strange LCD blanking thing sounds like it's caused by running in
framebuffer mode. Booting with the framebuffer disabled would probably
fix it. If this is the problem, you'll be able to reproduce it in the

With some help from #debian, it turns out that the module supporting the
broadcom net interface (b44) wasn't being loaded.
After `modprobe b44` and `ifup eth0` I can use eth0. I dunno how this
affects debian-installer though...
