I redid the cabin sole on Alianna about 6 years ago. It is teak and holy
and it is glued down.
I removed the old finish with chemical (methylene chloride gel) stripper and
a simple scraper. Then a very light sanding with 220 grit, clean the dust
finishing with a solvent wetted rag.

My cabin sole is not original (replaced 6 / 7 years ago), but there's one
painful aspect of the piece to port under the settee; to remove it I have
to either unstep the mast, or dismantle the settee base (the flat
immediately under the cushions). Just something to look out for...

Since the mast is still stepped, I had to remove the port settee base on my
34+. It came off with the removal of about a dozen flat head screws -- a little
tight around the sides where the cushions sit and a couple of minor scratches
which will be hidden by the cushions.

My settee may not be original either. Essentially, there's a flat piece of
plywood (with attached fiddles to keep the cushions in place) that's
screwed to the fiberglass liner that's attached to the hull. The
interference issue is the little "pan-handle" of the board that is to port
of the mast.
I hate to admit, but I am at 115 ft (6 boats). But I hope to go down one
(actually, in negotiations as we speak). This would get me down to only 91 ft.
Btw. this calculations give an unfair advantage to kayak owners (they are long
(17-22 ft?)).

Weren't there some here who really liked polyurethane for floorboards? I'd
love to see some pics and get some input. I have mine sealed and am trying
to decide whether to go that route or stick with varnish, which is what I
know, but will take many coats to fill the grain and get the finish I want.

There was a product called 'Ultimate Sole' that did a great job it
is/was shiny but not slippery, even when wet. I have heard that it has
been discontinued but I bet there a few quarts in someone's inventory
somewhere..worth a try to try and find a quart.

I pulled mine, used them as templates. Where the underside has an angled
cut I used a 45 degree angled bit in the router. 2 full sheets.
On mine the sole doesn't run under the settee, the only piece that may
be pinned in place was a small piece that is around the mast step base.
Tip - rough
I have found that on one particular tack the 1000 tends to be a little sketchy
with its ability to stay on course as its compass goes whacky. It's almost like
the units gimbal gets jammed up or something. As a result the course computer
decides to make a change based on false compass readings. T
If you haven't done this, try cleaning the ends of the compass wires and
reattaching them to the controller.
No problem taking the fluxgate compass apart to have a look, I have done
that but there's not much to see or work on and I doubt anything is sticking

I would but on the ST1000 opening it up breaks the factory seal for water
proofing. Not something i want to do to a deck mounted unit. The first unit I
received had a malfunctioning compass and knowing I was sending it back, I took
it apart to see how it worked. The compass inside is pretty cool
This is why I like the hard plastic sole in Anchovy. I replaced the little
bilge coverwith new 1/4" marine ply coated with epoxy and 15 coats of
varathane. Now I just sweep the pan and scrub with soap and water once a
season.

Last season we heat stripped the cabin sole of our '78 34' and re-did it with
Epifanes.
7 coats of clear gloss, thinned 25%, then 3 coats Satin Epifanes, also thinned,
to kill the gloss and slip hazards.
Once the prep work is done, the multiple coats EASILY build protection and fill
grain nicely

I guess this proves once more that there are as many ways to finish cabin soles
as there are boat owners. Maybe I'll try ceramic tile next time around. Cool on
