I have found that on one particular tack the 1000 tends to be a little sketchy with its ability to stay on course as its compass goes whacky. It's almost like the units gimbal gets jammed up or something. As a result the course computer decides to make a change based on false compass readings. This is corrected as soon as I physically disengage the unit thus changing its angle relative to the heel of the boat. I've played with the northern Southern Hemisphere settings to no avail. I've eliminated VHF and other interference from the list so I thought plugging it into a remote compass would help out. I'm also going to try reversing the unit and mount it to the port side. There's less metal there. Currently it's mounted above the propane locker and my be getting some interference from the 6 dozen empty beer cans in there near the end of season. Generally it's very reliable but I did an experiment last fall where I let it work on its own for 3 straight hours. It gradually steered the boat to a more northerly course. Normally the auto pilot is only called upon for 10 minutes at a time for sail changes etc. so the long range performance is not a big deal but it would be nice to have it working to design.
