If you haven't done this, try cleaning the ends of the compass wires and
reattaching them to the controller.

No problem taking the fluxgate compass apart to have a look, I have done
that but there's not much to see or work on and I doubt anything is sticking
but it's relatively easy to have a look inside

I have found that on one particular tack the 1000 tends to be a little
sketchy with its ability to stay on course as its compass goes whacky. It's
almost like the units gimbal gets jammed up or something. As a result the
course computer decides to make a change based on false compass readings.
This is corrected as soon as I physically disengage the unit thus changing
its angle relative to the heel of the boat.

I've played with the northern Southern Hemisphere settings to no avail.

I've eliminated VHF and other interference from the list so I thought
plugging it into a remote compass would help out.

I'm also going to try reversing the unit and mount it to the port side.
There's less metal there. Currently it's mounted above the propane locker
and my be getting some interference from the 6 dozen empty beer cans in
there near the end of season.

Generally it's very reliable but I did an experiment last fall where I let
it work on its own for 3 straight hours. It gradually steered the boat to a
more northerly course.

Normally the auto pilot is only called upon for 10 minutes at a time for
sail changes etc. so the long range performance is not a big deal but it
would be nice to have it working to design.

Brent, out of curiosity, what characteristic of the ST 1000's behavior are
you attempting to change? The 1000's compass is generally quite adequate

I have an ST1000 tiller pilot that I am fairly happy with. I just got an
ST40 compass and I understand that if the pilot sees another flux gate
compass in the network it will ignore its own built in unit and use the
other. I like that idea as I can mount the compass in a less lively place
and clear of interferences. My question is what additional wiring do I need
and what would the wiring layout be to interface the pilot to my ST40
compass and ST40 bidata display?

The instructions don't discuss the remote fluxgate method.

Well, I'm still out in Colorado skiing. My ski buddies and I have been
"sampling" hot drinks late in the afternoon at some of the on slope bars.
(The last run of the day is always "fun".)

Mostly they involve coffee or hot chocolate with combinations of Bailey's,
Frangelica, Amaretto, Kahlua, Jamison's. Haven't decided on a favorite yet.
I encourage listers to experiment and report back. :) The

Nutty Irishman is high on the list:

* 1 ounce Irish cream liqueur

*  1 ounce Frangelico

*  1 ounce Kahlua

*  5 ounces hot coffee

*  Whipped cream, for garnish

* Green sanding sugar, for garnish (optional)

New topic; Best Hot Drinks for Boating
Hot chocolate is nice, but what are some good "adult" drinks to warm up the
offwatch crew, or celebrate at the dock?

Is there a frostbiter's special?
