Lots of good, thoughtful responses.
That said, C&C really should have put midships cleats on the damn
boats. (At least on the ones over 10,000 lbs).
Sure, it&

I just use a large spring hook through the toerail. It wears a bit on the black

If you use snubbers on your bow and stern lines, it will lessen the shock when
the boat bounces around. I use them, but none on the spring line, as there is
enough stretch in the three-strand nylon I'm using. The spring line on my boat
is tied from the dock cleat to the stern mooring line cleat.

I spring by tying the line to a "Johnson cleat".
Designed for the purpose...connected to my toerail on the dock side.

I bolted a piece of angle iron to the toe rail then mounted a standard
cleat on the horizontal section of the angle iron. It enables load to be
applied to the toe rail that is very strong with much less concern for
abrasion.

I agree with Andrew -- put a block on your toe rail and run it to a winch. That
should be plenty strong. If you have the room, you may want to add some if
those rubber shock-absorber-thingies to them.
All the best,

I might take them through a block on the toerail and then secure them on a
winch. Either use the primaries or a halyard winch, if you have one on deck and
you're not chafing anything.
