Thank you for your time John. I tend to use the (grey beard) umount command with bconsole. I know it un-mounts the tape and is ready to accept a new tape for labeling or such tasks. It didn't make sense to 'release' a tape (volume) especially if the backup is going to span multiple cartridges.
