Probably they fixed the via82cxxx_audio drive, that was generating error
messages when I did a sndconfig.
tall: changed my distro to
the Fedora Core, and now I have sound. I guess alsa is not working, because
aplay doesn't run, but everything (that works in Windows XP) works in
Linux. I still don't have a sound recorder.

Uh? I still have no sound, despite everything I did. Do you think
I should try this? What other things I should remove? artsd?
The dual boot with Windows XP? :-)
p/sub0/status does not exist.
But /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/sub0/status contains the string "closed".
With aplay:
fuser /dev/snd/controlC0 is empty.
/proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/sub0/status is:
state: RUNNING

Yes, but killing artsd doesn't solve the problem :-(
BTW, when I try to aplay, there's no difference in a call to
fuser /dev/*
And there's a difference in fuser /dev/snd/* , namely:
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0p:2324 2324m

Playing WAVE 'something.wav' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 44100 Hz, Stereo
And then it takes an infinite time, without sound output.
there's something in fuser /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p,
namely:
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0p:1696 1696m
This 1696 is the aplay that I aborted but didn't kill.

Where are them?
BTW, I failed miserably to install the 0.9.8 drivers, and I
have no clue why it doesn't work: I get no error messages.
Is there any hope that I will succeed in 1.0.0 ?

Does sndconfig crash something when it's used with alsa?
sndconfig returns some stupid error related to via82cxxx_audio -
this is not a module from alsa, or is it?

And there's no way to make it work again.
BTW, sndconfig reports some errors in the via82cxxx_audio, like
