I had a similar problem with my via82xx card. There was nothing I could do
to have sound. Friday I did a Format & Reinstall: changed my distro to
the Fedora Core, and now I have sound. I guess alsa is not working, because
aplay doesn't run, but everything (that works in Windows XP) works in
Linux. I still don't have a sound recorder.
