I confirm the exact same problem as in the bug description in released Kubuntu 8.10 Intrepid, on a 1024x600 display (Acer Aspire One). -- KDM background image not displayed correctly on low resolution display https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/259181 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 296064] [NEW] [Intrepid] Text editing in KMail 1.0.1 dreadfully slow
Public bug reported: Since upgraded from Hardy to Intrepid, text editing (while writing an email) is dreadfully slow in KMail 1.0.1, to the point that it is hardly usable, especially when inserting reply text in the middle of the replied message. Text is typed at a speed of no much more than 1 character per second, eating 100% CPU. Insertion is dramatically slow, text scrolling is dramatically slow, at least 20 times slower compared to KMail in Hardy. This is a definitive show stopper for using KMail to me, until this is fixed. On a global standpoint, KDE 4.1 is graphically nice, but should be considered an incomplete BETA version for the rest. I don't feel it is ready for prime time, too many things that work bad or simply do not. ** Affects: kdepim (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [Intrepid] Text editing in KMail 1.0.1 dreadfully slow https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/296064 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Confirming here also (Intrepid) . [Bug 303064] [NEW] [Intrepid kernel 2.6.27] LVM snapshots causes I/O freeze and system lock / hang
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-image Happens on : 2.6.27-7-generic, 2.6.27-9-generic (x86_64) Severity : Major issue for running a server using LVM snapshots. Regression : This issue temporarily existed in a much older kernel version (don't remember which, think it was a 2.6.1x) and was quickly fixed by the time. Now it's back :-( This problem definitely didn't exist in Hardy with its 2.6.24 kernels. Description : On a system with LVM snapshots active, intensive I/O may randomly (read: often) result in an I/O freeze on the snapshots origin volumes, leading to a complete system lockup after a while. I/O to the snapshots themselves is unaffected. Probably some kernel race condition while writing to snapshots origin and COWing to snapshots. Typical situation : Active server with backups being performed from LVM snapshots. The running backup goes on unaffected from the snapshots, but after a while all other running processes on the system start freezing in I/O wait mode when they request disk access (to the snapshots origin volumes). - Once backup is finished, trying to deactivate LVM snapshots freezes as well. - System cannot be cleanly rebooted or halted. As I/O is blocked this results in a necessary brutal hard reboot. ** Affects: linux-ports-meta (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [Intrepid kernel 2.6.27] LVM snapshots causes I/O freeze and system lock / hang https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/303064 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 342923] Re: [i945] (Needs UXA) Kubuntu Jaunty Intel 945 GM - Poor sluggish graphics performance in Kate text, etc.
@Bartek: « the MTRR fix is (AFAIK) to improve EXA performance ... and you were clearly running UXA as per the log you posted. » I don't have a clue about what EXA or UXA are, I'm no graphics drivers expert ;-) I only know that UXA seemed disabled (per Xorg.log) before I applied the suggestions from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130582 that enabled it. But I'm completely clueless about which should provide best performance. As for MTRRs, the said Howto suggests to run fixmtrr.sh "each time X is restarted" but it doesn't state if it should be run before or after starting X, not what would be the best place to place a call for it. So I haven't used it at all so far... Looks stupid ;-)) @Zack Evans: « are you now getting "(EE) intel(0): underrun on pipe A!" messages in the log? » No, I haven't seen any such message in X log (nor in .xsession-errors or syslog, I was unsure where to look for it, but it isn't in any of these logs or past logs). > « if performance in your favourite game has dropped by half that's more meaningful that GLXgears dropping by half. » Well, I'm no big gamer and play no game at all nor use graphics- intensive apps on this precise machine very often, so I have no "measuring" tool besides glxgears. I'm actually more concerned by having my KMail toolbar corrupt or tray icons acting up, and I'd rather have a nice desktop with smooth behaviour rather than doing any FPS competition. I'm also used (it was already the case in Intrepid) to see KDE 4.2 frequently spit messages at me stating « Compositing was too slow and has been disabled. If this was only temporary press [Alt]-[Shift]-[F12] to re-enable it » or some message close to this one. This most of the times occurs when reordering Firefox tabs with the mouse where I would expect this to be no big deal graphically speaking. It also may occur when the sytem is under heavy CPU load and I shift desktops or open/close/move windows. But this is not really relevant to Jaunty as it already did that in Intrepid. -- [i945] (Needs UXA) Kubuntu Jaunty Intel 945 GM - Poor sluggish graphics performance in Kate text, etc. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/342923 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 342923] Re: [i945] (Needs UXA) Kubuntu Jaunty Intel 945 GM - Poor sluggish graphics performance in Kate text, etc.
Using the experimental PPA packages with UXA acceleration brought me some observations after some hours of use, besides the occasional screen "flashes" I had already reported (I use a "blank scren" screensaver that fires up after 5 minutes): 1/ Once the screensaver blanks the screen, it will sometimes be impossible to resume work. The screen is blank (black) and will remain so. The machine is not hanged as it is still possible to shift to texte console. But X is dead: Even killing X or restarting KDM won't result in anything else than a blank screen until the machine is rebooted. 2/ Suspend to RAM : About half of the times, the KDE session is dead at resume. The machine resumes on KDM login screen. 3/ Logging out the KDE session: Sometimes results in a blank (black) screen where the system doesn't react anymore. Nothing can be done locally except using the kernel's "Magic SysRq" keys. Machine will still be remotely usable using SSH - well, for rebooting it... So it looks that indeed the cure made things worse :-( I've installed some new MesaGL updates from PPA this morning, but if it doesn't bring an improvement I'll try reverting back to old Intrepid drivers (wonder if I won't simply restore my system from my last Intrepid backups and trash all that Jaunty Junk :-( For everything was perfectly stable and working in Intrepid... -- [i945] (Needs UXA) Kubuntu Jaunty Intel 945 GM - Poor sluggish graphics performance in Kate text, etc. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/342923 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kdebase-workspace in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

I've just tried using EXA accel instead of UXA with the latest PPA drivers : - glxgears reports 550-590 FPS with EXA where it would report about 230 FPS with UXA. - ppracer is smooth and fun with 25-30 FPS with EXA where it would be 3 to 5 FPS with UXA. - I haven't yet had time to investigate if it has other impacts on system stability or graphics artifacts, but at least the perf gain is huge. The exact same config (but without having installed fixmtrr.sh) also seems to work good on a Dell XPS M1330 (Intel GM965) and gives a 20-30 FPS rate in ppracer on this machine. @Gnurou : you can still manually download the older packages from http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ppa/ubuntu/pool/main/x/ > « I am really close from dropping Ubuntu on this one. » So am I. I'm not sure if any project "head" at Ubuntu/Canonical is aware of the seriousness of such issues and the point to which it can piss off both old Linux sysadmins and I.T. professionals and Linux newcomers. Myself I spent enough time in the past convincing non-I.T. friends and relatives and friends of friends to "make the big jump" from M$ to Ubuntu, advocating how easy, mature and polished it was. Well... Just spent half of the week-end on the phone and email trying to fix my friend's machines and explain them why their graphics were now crashing, their screen getting black, their video playback sluggish, their games unusable... And that it may get better someday, or not, who knows... I consider that the recent series of regressions in Ubuntu are quite close to distribution sabotage and I would almost wonder "who gets paid by Krimo$oft for doing this ?" Who among the distro validators is irresponsible enough to validate for "distribution release" the breaking of Intel graphics drivers, the absence (incompatibility) of ATI fglrx drivers, and so forth ? A desktop machine without decent and working graphics drivers is unusable, period. Yes I'm ranting again and I know that some readers of this rant will be extremely displeased, but I think it's time for a loud "Wake up guys! Who do you think are Ubuntu users ? What hardware do you believe they use ? What do you think they expect from a dist-upgrade ? Do you believe every Ubuntu users out there has both the competency and time for digging into forums and bug reports, tweak config files with vi in text mode, install experimental packages that may work then may break, just to fix things that used to work and are expected to continue working after upgrading to a supposedly stable distro release ?" IMHO, these Xorg drivers problems make the whole Jaunty relase good for the trash can (and kill the work and effort of all the developpers of other parts of the distribution). ...and I still see "Importance : Undecided" on top of this bug report... -- [i945] (Needs UXA) Kubuntu Jaunty Intel 945 GM - Poor sluggish graphics performance in Kate text, etc. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/342923 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 334191] [NEW] KDE 4 branch SSL certificates support completely broken
Public bug reported: KDE SSL certificates support in all the KDE 4, 4.1, 4.2 series is completely broken. KDE bug : https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=162485 This impacts (makes impossible) all use of SSL certificates in KDE, including KMail. [Bug 366775] [NEW] [Kubuntu Jaunty] : WPA2 not supported - Network plasmoid
Public bug reported: Hi, I've seen several bug reports about WPA2 not working in Jaunty, most turning into considerations about this or that specific wireless card driver considered as the possible issue. Well, I've upgraded 4 laptops using different Wi-Fi cards (with ath5k, ath9k, ath_pci or iwl3945 driver modules) from Intrepid to Jaunty. ALL of these laptops were supporting WPA2 properly in Intrepid and Hardy. None of these supports WPA2 anymore in Jaunty. The KDE network plasmoïd "encryption" drop-down box doesn't even display a "WPA2" option on any of the machines. However, all of these laptops support WPA (AES-CCMP) in Jaunty. This boils down to : Kubuntu Jaunty doesn't support WPA2, considerations about a particular driver are irrelevant. Either because of a network manager regression (that would affect Ubuntu as well, then), or because the KDE network plasmoïd doesn't handle WPA2 (and then it wouldn't affect users of the Ubuntu desktop). ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [Kubuntu Jaunty] : WPA2 not supported - Network plasmoid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/366775 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 348275 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/348275 Bug #348275 goes in many directions, focusing on some specific WL NIC drivers, or stating "can't connect to anything but open networks", or discussing the issue of having simultaneously 2 frontends to Network Manager... which is not my case. I opened a separate bug report because what I noticed is simpler both to understand and describe : - On 4 different laptops that I have upgraded from Kubuntu Intrepid to Jaunty (final, not a beta or RC) : - All having different WL NICs and drivers. All managing properly WPA2 with Knetworkmanager in Intrepid. - All of them using the KDE plasma Network Manager controller in Jaunty, all of them with Knetworkmanager removed. - None of them supports WPA2 anymore using Plasma NM widget. All of them still support WPA. - Plasma NM widget doesn't even show a "WPA2" choice in the encryption choice box. So I suspect the issue to be either there or in Jaunty's NetworkManager itself. I don't believe this to be an issue with any specific WL NIC driver issue. That's why I opened a separate bug report. I found the previous one was going in too many different directions and it's thread of comments was a really complex mess, where the description of the problem I saw on 4 different machines is rather simple and perfectly reproductible... -- [Kubuntu Jaunty] : WPA2 not supported - Network plasmoid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/366775 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 342923] Re: [i945] (Needs UXA) Kubuntu Jaunty Intel 945 GM - Poor sluggish graphics performance in Kate text, etc.
Confirming this bug on Asus EeePC 1002HA, "Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller". Upgrading from Kubuntu Intrepid + KDE 4.2 (PPA) to Jaunty severely broke KDE graphics. First things I noticed were serious issues with graphics elements redrawing, i.e. KMail toolbar disappearing and showing desktop background instead until mouse is hovered on this zone, causing graphics elements to reappear. Well, it was perfect in Intrepid + KDE 4.2, broke in Jaunty. If I wear my "dummy user hat" this is unacceptable, and I'm considering ranting loud about general Ubuntu regressions at each and every new version. I've been a Linux user and supporter since 10+ years and sometimes a little code contributor in the past. I'm now professionally managing parks of Linux machines as well as advising non-I.T. friends and relatives. >From both points of view it is completely unacceptable that when performing a version upgrade, oh, graphics get broke on this machine, sound is lost on that machine, fglrx driver doesn't exist anymore for ATI cards, KDE SSL certs support has been broke for the whole KDE 4.x branch and not fixed even if bugs reports have been made 10 months ago, kernel is now compiled without USB_persist, WPA2 isn't supported anymore in Jaunty, Xen Dom0 kernel is missing since Intrepid and on... What the fsck is going on ? A geek can live with that and spend 1 day trying to figure out ONE problem, dig into a config file, read forums, recompile kernel on ONE machine when upgrading, but how could a professional managing a park of machine stand to live with that at each upgrade ? How could a professional tolerate that SSL certs support suddently disappears between KDE 3.x and 4.x and nothing is done in 10 months to fix it ? And how could non-I.T. more or less clueless beginner users (at whom Ubuntu also aims) find acceptable losing sound or graphics and having no clue when they upgrade ? I don't know what Ubuntu's doing but I'm starting to get really really angry at it generally speaking... I had to state it somewhere, now it's done in that bug report :-( Except for unforeseen and unpredictable bugs, a version upgrade should never break anything that used to work, or something is seriously broke with the project management, period. -- [i945] (Needs UXA) Kubuntu Jaunty Intel 945 GM - Poor sluggish graphics performance in Kate text, etc. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/342923 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 342923] Re: [i945] (Needs UXA) Kubuntu Jaunty Intel 945 GM - Poor sluggish graphics performance in Kate text, etc.
No matter how good the reason and explanations can be... It's very good that the developpers of a given driver or package improve it, and it may result in occasional regressions and trouble. But we're not talking about a driver's development but about a _major distribution_ and it's the responsibility of the packagers of a major distribution such as Ubuntu not to incorporate immature technologies resulting in end-user large and previsible regressions until the new version of this or that is mature. Maybe keep the bleeding-edge incomplete packages to experimental repositories, clearly labeled as such so it's a choice and nobody's surprised. When you professionally manage a park of heterogeneous machines and have to upgrade tens of them, you simply can't afford to lose one day of work solving (or not !) one or two different new problems or regressions for each and every machine you upgrade. And for the not-so-knowledgeable end-user who was happy with the previous release on his machine and is still discovering Linux, releasing a new distro version where the upgrade will previsibly break what used to work is simply a no-go. That really makes me worry about the directions Ubuntu takes : since Gutsy I have a several pages list of serious regressions and upgrade issues that surely affect a large proportion of the users base... -- [i945] (Needs UXA) Kubuntu Jaunty Intel 945 GM - Poor sluggish graphics performance in Kate text, etc. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/342923 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 246496] [NEW] [Hardy] Several artsd competing for 100% CPU
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: arts This happens on an Acer Aspire 3104 WLMi after upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy (problem didn't exist in Gutsy) and has persisted thru all Hardy updates so far. At KDE session startup, not always but very often, and especially when restoring at the same time a number of windows that would each produce a little sound when opening, the system shows dreadfully slow and produces no sound. It remains in this state of "dreadful slowness" indefinitely. "top" then shows that several artsd processes (typically 2 or 3) are running and competing for eating 100% CPU. Issuing "killall -KILL artsd" (-TERM doesn't help) kills all mad artsd processes and : - The system suddenly issues a cascade of sounds that seems to have been waiting, queued or whatever. - After that a single artsd process is running, behaving OK and sound works. [Bug 217846] Re: Slow suspend/resume in Hardy
Here the /etc/network/interfaces is not involved in slow resume after suspend to RAM, so the proposed workaround doesn't help. When resuming my Acer Aspire 3104 WLMi, my hard disk always works like crazy for at least 1 minute before I at least get the screen backlight to light again, and still more before I eventually get the screensaver unlock prompt. After resumed I notice the swap is highly used (at least 400 MB) even if it was almost empty when I suspended. The machine has 1 GB RAM and 2 GB swap, and I have no clue about why it happens only with this laptop : I have several Kubuntu Hardy laptops, and only this one shows such a resume behaviour, the fastest one being a Dell XPS M1330 on which resuming is really completely intantaneous. -- Slow suspend/resume in Hardy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/217846 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 247180] [NEW] [Hardy] Kubuntu live CD installer can't install on unformatted LVM volumes
Public bug reported: Hi, I usuall install Kubuntu over LVM (possibly encrypted) using the live CD, because I find creating the LVM manually (would be nice if the live CD could include the lvm2 and cryptsetup packages, they're rather small and it would save me to "aptitude install" them each time and have to chroot to finish the install on the destination HD to add lvm2 again...) then performing a "live CD install" is faster and easier rather than using the "alternate CD", so I first manually create the LVM and volumes and then install on it doing a normal "live CD install". I've found out that the Kubuntu live CD installer manual partitioning tool cannot install on LVM volumes (it doesn't properly recognize them) if they haven't been previously mke2fs'ed or mkswap'ped, but it's OK if they have been. Would be nice if the partitioning tool could recognized LVM volumes even if not populated with a filesystem (as it will mkfs them later on anyway)... ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [Hardy] Kubuntu live CD installer can't install on unformatted LVM volumes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/247180 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Sorry, this one may be a duplicate, I thought I had reported it before but I can't find the bug report ;-) I now have upgraded a number of Kubuntu machines from Gutsy to Hardy, and it's the 4th time I happen to fall on the same issue : After upgrade, the new initramfs has been generated, grub's menu.lst has been updated with the new kernel, but the new "initrd" entry is missing from grub's menu.lst, giving a machine that won't boot the new kernel (unless the missing initrd line is manually added at boot time). ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [hardy] Upgrading from gutsy doesn't create initramfs entry in grub's menu.lst https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/231429 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Issue confirmed here : - Hardy, NVidia board, latest hardy-included NVidia drivers : Konsole text gets corrupt / scrambled when Compiz active and cube rotated. - Also some other text shows this corruption, i.e. text in Kontact status bar - « Option "UseCompositeWrapper" "true" » in xorg.conf seems to fix the issue. - However Virtualbox (1.6.0-30421_Ubuntu_hardy, Sun package) seems to accept this fix without crashing, contrary to report above. [Bug 222714] Re: konsole gets corrupted when compiz switches viewports
It's an XP inside the VirtualBox, and I believe my VBox config has nothing special regarding the video. Just the "Virtualbox additions" installed, that's all. Anyway, I have just quit using Compiz on this machine because I observed several system locks (not real locks, I can SSH into it from another machine, but it is locally unusable) with screensavers and Compiz. Compiz goes 100% CPU usage and the keyboard becomes dead after some time in screensaver mode. I believe Compiz has hard times managing perpetual changes in the root window, that would probably need another bug report which I'm too lazy to file... That's the very reason why I had quit using Beryl a year ago after only a few days using it : The machine often became unusable after having spent some time in screensaver mode. Compiz does the same now and I have no time to try to find a fix. By that time the machine was actually properly anwering ping and SSH thru Wi-Fi, but it had already been "trying to wake up" for at least a cigarette and a cup of coffee ;-) When I went back to the laptop it still took a couple dozens of seconds before I could in the end get an image on screen (KDE screensaver unlock dialog) and found myself back into a very slow and dramatically swapping, but otherwise working system. -- Slow suspend/resume in Hardy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/217846 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 217846] Re: Slow suspend/resume in Hardy
On the other hand, my Dell XPS M1330 laptop (madwifi, Intel video) wakes up after "suspend to RAM" in approx 3 seconds... Both machines run Hardy with all updates applied and on both machines (Acer Aspire and Dell XPS) I initiated "suspend" just by closing the laptop screen with KDE "power manager" set to "suspend when lid closed". And although the wake up time of the Dell XPS looks surprisingly short (especially compared to the Acer...) I can confirm it was actually suspended (Ethernet LED went off, screen backlight went off, power LED started blinking) and actually woke up (panel LEDs flashed, DVD writer issued a noise, Ethernet LED went back, screeen lit). So different machines can really show a very different behaviour in Hardy, but before some updates were applied, my Acer was behaving more or less like the Dell, only a little slower :-( -- Slow suspend/resume in Hardy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/217846 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Confirming in Intrepid + KDE 4.2 from PPA, knetworkmanager Version: 1:0.7svn864988-0ubuntu1.8.10.3. When trying to set a fixed IP for an interface with KNetworkmanager, the connection will fail with a syslog message such as : « NetworkManager: connection_get_settings_cb(): connection_get_settings_cb: Invalid connection: 'NMSettingIP4Config' / 'addresses' invalid: 1 NetworkManager: wait_for_connection_expired(): Connection (2) /org/freedesktop/NetworkManagerSettings/Connection/7 failed to activate (timeout): (0) Connection was not provided by any settings service » Tracing this it seems to relate with the following line that KNetworkManager generates in knetworkmanagerrc for the fixed IP address : Value_addresses=\n \n 2164435136\n 16777215\n 4261587136\n\n\n We can see here that the "list" tags open/close are doubled. If closing KNetworkmanager and editing knetworkmanagerrc by hand, then removing the doubled tags, and restarting KNetworkManager afterwards, the connection will establish again with no errors - but in DHCP, it will ignore the fixed address specification. IMHO looks like KNetworkManager just puts wrotten values in its XML config file and is unable to parse them properly afterwards, and sends bullshit to networkmanager. Everytime the install froze completely at exactly 87%, last thing that got displayed was "Downloading languages packs" which actually seemed to download files, but then the installation sat there with ubiquity eating 100% CPU for hours (I let it sit there a complete night to check if something might happen in the end, but it didn't...) with no message at all, no way to go beyond this except killing install, so I had to revert back to installing 7.04 feisty on those 2 machines. * I had controlled that the network connections for these 2 machines were actually up and properly running. I will add to this one that I tested this several times and it "consistently crashes". [Bug 226096] [NEW] Hardy: Kernel 2.6.24-16-generic hangs on machine
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-16-generic Hi there, On a desktop machine that was running Gutsy's kernel 2.6.22-14-generic with no problem, and upgrade to Hardy shows that the new 2.6.24-16-generic kernel is absolutely unbootable on the machine. Whatever boot option taken (including tries of "acpi=off", "noapic", "nolapic", etc...) the kernel crashes at boot, ending with : « BUG : soft lockup-CPU#0 stuck for 11 s ! » This situation is "100% stable and reproductible". (Reported by user, I'm 650 kms away from this machine...) Hardy can be used with old Gutsy's 2.6.22-14 kernel, which raises other issues (corresponding headers got uninstalled by upgrade, old 2.6.22-14 kernel headers package now unavailable in Hardy so can't reinstall it, new NVidia drivers package won't run with old kernel, all this forcing to basically manually an "old kernel headers tree" then compile NVIdia drivers from NVidia site). It's a pain in the *** that not only the new kernel doesn't work but the upgrade process removes old kernel headers and that newly installed driver packages would only run with the new kernel :-( Anyway this issue of 2.6.24-16 not running one some hardware where previous kernels would looks like a show-stopper to me. [Bug 226096] Re: Hardy: Kernel 2.6.24-16-generic hangs on machine
Okay, I think I found the cause of the problem, this [ntdriver:3632] part of the error message that the remote user didn't tell me helped me isolate the problem : Both machines that hanged after upgrade have a Thomson WLG-1500A USB Wi- Fi adapter, which is driven via ndiswrapper and the "sis163u" windows driver. Unpluging this adapter allowed the machine to boot the new kernel without crashing. Now the issue seems to relate between this precise driver and ndiswrapper/kernel, for I have upgraded a laptop that also uses ndiswrapper for Wi-Fi (but with a different Wi-Fi susbsystem) and this one showed no problem. It's quite annoying that the use of the Thomson WLG-1500A USB Wi-Fi adapter + ndiswrapper causes such a major system lock-up after updrade, because this precise adapter has been given out by the major ISP in France (France Telecom / Orange / Wanadoo) to a huge number of customers, with its "livebox" DSL solution... So for sure you are gonna get tons of bugs reports related to the same adapter... Now I'm stuck with the issue : How to get this thing to work in Hardy ? -- Hardy: Kernel 2.6.24-16-generic hangs on machine https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/226096 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 132905] Kubuntu install partitioning tool problem
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: base-installer Trying to install Kubuntu (from live Desktop CD) on a system with a rather complex partitioning scheme and a large number of "partitions" (system using EVMS + LVM2 with already existing partitions and LVM setup), the "Manual" choice in the partitioning tool displays a large box full of solid blue and red rectangles (without any text) which I guess represents system partitions. The matter is that this partitions (?) window, in my case, is much taller than my physical display, and has no scrollbars, so there's no way I can see what's at the bottom of the window (buttons maybe ?), nor can I move it up (the window "move" refuses to move the widow title bar higher than the physical screen), and I'm stuck there where I can't perform any action - but close the window and installer. So I went to an Ubuntu CD and tried the same, and there it works because the Ubuntu live Desktop CD installer, when choosing "manual partitions setup", gives a window where the partitions are listed as text, and can be scrolled (using window scrollbar) for proper selection and configuration. So this problem is specific to the Kubuntu 7.04 "live" installer in "manual partitioning" mode, but it's allright in "Ubuntu". So I had to first install Ubuntu this way, then install Kubuntu packages once Ubuntu was up and running. [Bug 185955] [NEW] [Gutsy] : SD card readers fail, all kinds.
Public bug reported: Hi, I've seen several bug reports about problems with SD cards readers of different kinds, but I'd like to report here that I have encountered trouble with *all* SD cards readers that I've tried to use with Ubuntu Gutsy, on 3 machines : 1/ A desktop system with an externally attached brandless USB 2.0 hub / Multiformat memory card reader (cards are seen as /dev/sd* devices) 2/ An Acer Aspire 3104 WLMi laptop with an integrated ENE SD/MMC card reader (that wasn't seen at all in feisty, and that "appeared" after upgrading to Gutsy) (cards are seen as /dev/mmcblk*) 3/ An Asus EeePC laptop with an integrated SD/MMC card reader that is seen as an UBS 2.0 device and shows its cards as /dev/sdb. On all these systems : - SD cards, all types, are recognized at insertion and their contents can be shown, whatever size or speed the card is. - On all kind of cards, reading and writing *small* amounts of data (up to a few dozens megabytes) at a time, works. - On all "big" cards ( > 1GB ), reading and copying large amounts of data at a time causes I/O errors and ends in freezing the programs that are accessing the cards. - The ENE card reader (seen as /dev/mmcblk0p*...) cause various I/O error messages to be spit in syslog. (can't be more precise, I don't have the machine at hand right now) - The USB 2.0 card readers, either internal or external, usually cause some repetitive USB errors to be logged, such as "reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address blah" - It seems that the bigger and slower card, the sooner the problem happens, and the smaller and faster card, the later it happens (or not at all). - I have seen this on more than 6 different cards (different sizes, brands and speeds) and tested all concerned SD cards in other devices (GPS device, digital camera) and also on 2 different Winthing laptops with integrated SD card readers, and the SD cards behave well on all these machines. So it's obvious to me that trying to use SD cards with Ubuntu Gutsy leads to failures, whatever the SD card reader equipment is, and whatever card is used (but the smaller and faster the better). ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [Gutsy] : SD card readers fail, all kinds. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/185955 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 177024] Re: I can't mount my stick datatraveler reader 2gb of kingston
Interestingly enough, I have an Asus EeePC ultra-laptop on which I have just installed XUbuntu 7.10 Gutsy. This machine has an integrated SD/MMC card reader that identifies itself as an USB device with ID 0951:1606 Kingston Technology exactly as your USB pen does. It shows more or less the same characteristics as yours in "lsusb" except it shows "iManufacturer 1 ENE" I have the utmost trouble trying to use SD-Cards in it. It works (with some kernel-log reported errors) with SD-Cards of capacity <= 1 GB, but spits tons of errors and hangs with SD cards of capacity > 1 GB, and cannot write more than 16MB before hanging on a 4GB SD-HC. So your hardware is probably not at fault and probably the driver is. I also own an Acer Aspire 3104 WLMi that integrates an ENE SD-card reader, this one seens as a "mmcblk0" device and not an USB device. Anyway it shows the exact same problems with the exact same SD cards (tried a sample of 4 different SD cards of different capacities). Those same SD cards showing desperate problems in both my Acer laptop and Asus laptop running Ubuntu Gutsy works extremely well in my Tomtom GPS (embedded Linux inside), digital camera, or in a WinXP laptop... [Bug 139635] Re: [cryptsetup] library dependency in /sbin/cryptsetup
Good news there will be a fix ! Any idea about the time it will take to reach the Gutsy updates ? Besides this, I'm rather surprised to see the previous comment display "Urgency = LOW" when I otherwise see that listing the "release critical" bugs for Gutsy, importance "high" displays in the top 6 things such as : - Azureus hangs or crashes showing splash screen at start - Missing package dependencies in bittorrent-gui (Too bad, kids wont' be able to play with P2P with no trouble...) But "encrypted filesystems cannot mount and system boot fails" gets a "urgency = low" ?? No kidding ? Makes me wonder if I was not mistaken somewhere... Anybody else got some kind of the same feeling ? -- [cryptsetup] library dependency in /sbin/cryptsetup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/139635 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 158252] Re: dspam won't start: /var/run/dspam missing in tmpfs
I used the following at the beginning of dspam initscript : [ -d /var/run/dspam ] || { mkdir /var/run/dspam; chown dspam: /var/run/dspam; } (Did the same for the "sympa" initscript) I believe the "chown" can be useful in letting the daemon act on its pidfile once started, isn't it ? [Bug 119308] Re: Gutsy shutdown doesn't
Not sure this is the same bug but : Recent desktop system (AMD Sempron, NVidia chipset) which was shutting down perfectly with Feisty now sporadically hangs on shutdown after upgrade to Gutsy (kernel 2.6.22-14-generic). Not easy for me to be very specific, the machine is 400 miles away, it's a friend's machine which I administer from remote using SSH and of course I have no access to it when hanged on shutdown... According to the reports I got from her, machine stays forever on shutdown splash screen and nothing else happens. I have remotely deactivated the splash screen in grub's menu.lst to see if it can help or check last system messages from now on. Syslog doesn't show anything special after such a hang. She reported to me having had some filesystem errors reported at mount time after a forced reboot in such situation, so that's possible that hanging happens before the system is actually completely down. Machine uses the NVIdia proprietary X11 driver as well as ndiswrapper + sis163u driver for a Wi-Fi USB thing and I was suspecting one of them to be the cause of the issue - I've seen that losing the Wi-Fi connection sometimes hangs the system in Gutsy where it wouldn't happen in Feisty, although the "Windows" driver used by ndiswrapper is the same, so I was suspecting something weird could happen when shutting down networking. -- Gutsy shutdown doesn't https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/119308 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 159015] Gutsy release overall quality and regressions
Public bug reported: I'm not sure wheter this is the appropriate place, but after I've fresh- installed Gusty - or upgraded Feisty to Gutsy - on 7 different systems (1 server, 4 desktops, 2 laptops), I have felt quite disappointed with this new release, as each installation or upgrade on each machine brought me its host of bugs and regressions from Feisty. So I felt the need of opening this "bug report" for overall release quality and report most serious trouble as a whole "distro bug". To make it plain and simple, Feisty worked like a charm on every machine I used it on, while Gutsy broke something important - or at least annoying - on each and every machine I tried it on. The only improvement that matters to me and that Gutsy brought over Feisty is that, one one laptop, I now have support for the included SD/MMC card reader where Feisty didn't see it at all. To be honest, I have mostly tested and used the KDE flavour (Kubuntu) and not much the Gnome flavour (Ubuntu), so I cannot tell whether there are significant improvements in the Gnome area. For the rest... Trouble. Among the most serious or annoying bugs I fell upon : - Kubuntu's adept_manager is simply not up to the job of upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy (where Ubuntu's tool does it quite well). adept_manager systematically fails during upgrades in plenty of situations ; it's enough that a package upgrade tries to ask "Do I keep your old config file or install the package maintainer's new one" ? For adept_manager to fail. All Kubuntu upgrades I started with adept_manager ended in command-line using aptitude... (Bug #158043) - Upgrading Feisty to Gutsy doesn't put the "initrd" line for the new kernel in grub's menu.lst. Seen on 2 machines. Of course then, system boot fails. (Bug #156058) - Gutsy breaks encrypted filesystems at boot time if /usr is in a separate partition, as /sbin/cryptsetup has dependancies with libraries located in /usr/lib . Encrypted partitions don't mount, system won't boot. (Bug #139635) - Several daemons don't start anymore as /var/run is now tmpfs but the daemon startup script doesn't find nor create their /var/run/somedaemon directory. Suffered from this for 2 daemons (sympa and dspam), seen that same problem has been reported for more. (Bug #158252 and others) - A machine that used to shutdown plain good in feisty now sporadically hangs shutting down in Gutsy, kind of problem reported by several others (Bug #119308) - Laptops using ATI display driver used to suspend to RAM and hibernate properly in Feisty. Now they crash trying to suspend or hibernate in Gusty. (Bug #121653) - A machine that showed a Wi-Fi connection perfectly stable in Feisty, using ndiswrapper and a Windows driver, now has an unstable Wi-Fi connection in Gusty - using the same Windows driver, even reinstalled it - and now happens to hang completely if losing Wi-Fi link - never happened with Feisty. What a bunch of serious regressions ! I was really disappointed seing so many pure regressions from Feisty to Gutsy on each and every machine I installed or upgraded... Not even stating that I have installed systems for friends which I convinced to try to step out of Windows into Linux with the "easy, polished and stable" Ubuntu, friends who are now laughing at their instable system that crashes at shutdown, won't hibernate since the upgrade, etc... I know have to face friends stating I broke their system "upgrading" it, and well, they're damn right... I would add to this the poor choice of replacing Good Old Konqueror with Dolphin as default file manager in Kubuntu - not found yet a single person preferring Dolphin to Konqueror, whether newbie or experimented Linux user. I sincerely hope that the release of "hardy" will pay much more attention NOT TO REGRESS on so many, and important, points (Geeez ! Daemons that don't start ! Partitions that don't mount ! Systems that don't even boot !) for my confidence in Ubuntu has been quite undermined by these recent experiences I had... ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Gutsy release overall quality and regressions https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/159015 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 139635] Re: [cryptsetup] library dependency in /sbin/cryptsetup
I added "libgpg-error" to the "affects" as cryptsetup has dependancies to both libgcrypt11 and libgpg-error0, both currently being in /usr/lib, and both needed to be moved to /lib ... ** Also affects: libgpg-error (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [cryptsetup] library dependency in /sbin/cryptsetup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/139635 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 156058] Re: Upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy doesn't put initrd line in Grub.
On one of the machines for which the "initrd" grub's menu.lst line wasn't added, my /etc/kernel-img.conf says : do_symlinks = yes relative_links = yes do_bootloader = no do_bootfloppy = no do_initrd = yes link_in_boot = no I would add that on this machine, the root filesystem resides on EVMS which means something like LVM on top of software RAID... On the second machine, I have : do_symlinks = yes relative_links = yes do_bootloader = no do_bootfloppy = no do_initrd = yes link_in_boot = no postinst_hook = update-grub postrm_hook = update-grub This one has the rootfs on "standard" /dev/sda5 -- Upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy doesn't put initrd line in Grub. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/156058 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 156058] Re: Upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy doesn't put initrd line in Grub.
Would it explain why it got the "kernel" entries and lines and not the "initrd" ? The 2nd machine was a clean first-install of a Kubuntu Feisty then network-upgraded to Gutsy with some trouble (every Kubuntu upgrade I made caused trouble with adept_manager bailing out on error and forcing me to finish manually with command-line aptitude). I attach the /var/log/apt/term.log for the 2nd machine, but I now realize that I'm not a hundred percent sure that this is the correct machine. I'm 100% sure that on 2 machines I upgraded (among several) I noticed the grub menu.lst kernel entry had been added but not the initrd entry, but I'm only 80% sure it was _this_ machine... As previously said, I had different kind of trouble with every machine I upgraded and solved the problems as they came. I cannot guarantee that I make no mistake that *this* machine was one of the 2 with this specific problem. I think it is, but wouldn't bet my life on it ;-) ** Attachment added: "term.log file as requested" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10226709/cr.term.log -- Upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy doesn't put initrd line in Grub. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/156058 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
