Public bug reported:

Hi,

I've seen several bug reports about problems with SD cards readers of
different kinds, but I'd like to report here that I have encountered
trouble with *all* SD cards readers that I've tried to use with Ubuntu
Gutsy, on 3 machines :

1/ A desktop system with an externally attached brandless USB 2.0 hub /
Multiformat memory card reader (cards are seen as /dev/sd* devices)

2/ An Acer Aspire 3104 WLMi laptop with an integrated ENE SD/MMC card
reader (that wasn't seen at all in feisty, and that "appeared" after
upgrading to Gutsy) (cards are seen as /dev/mmcblk*)

3/ An Asus EeePC laptop with an integrated SD/MMC card reader that is
seen as an UBS 2.0 device and shows its cards as /dev/sdb.

On all these systems :

- SD cards, all types, are recognized at insertion and their contents
can be shown, whatever size or speed the card is.

- On all kind of cards, reading and writing *small* amounts of data (up
to a few dozens megabytes) at a time, works.

- On all "big" cards ( > 1GB ), reading and copying large amounts of
data at a time causes I/O errors and ends in freezing the programs that
are accessing the cards.

- The ENE card reader (seen as /dev/mmcblk0p*...) cause various I/O
error messages to be spit in syslog. (can't be more precise, I don't
have the machine at hand right now)

- The USB 2.0 card readers, either internal or external, usually cause
some repetitive USB errors to be logged, such as "reset high speed USB
device using ehci_hcd and address blah"

- It seems that the bigger and slower card, the sooner the problem
happens, and the smaller and faster card, the later it happens (or not
at all).

- I have seen this on more than 6 different cards (different sizes,
brands and speeds) and tested all concerned SD cards in other devices
(GPS device, digital camera) and also on 2 different Winthing laptops
with integrated SD card readers, and the SD cards behave well on all
these machines.

So it's obvious to me that trying to use SD cards with Ubuntu Gutsy
leads to failures, whatever the SD card reader equipment is, and
whatever card is used (but the smaller and faster the better).
