Re: [techtalk] Newbie: my printer.

1999-11-01 Thread lightingsolution

I have an HP OfficeJetPro 1150C - One of these printers with a flatbed
scanner on top. There is not a Linux driver available for it. If you
imagine it without the scanner, it looks like any other newish HP
Deskjet, so I configured my RedHat for a Deskjet 500+. It works fine. -
As a printer, I've yet to try the scanner!

[techtalk] 6.1 install, revisited

and i had trouble with the bootdisk that i got right off of the cd. What
myself and a friend ended up doing is we booted into 5.2 (the then current
install) and mounted the 6.1 install cd. then we ran the update from
there. Worked like a charm.

must be the bootdisk problem, although I tried using the 5.2 bootdisk that
i had and still had the same results as trying with the 6.1 bootdisk

what a weekend! and it's still monday. :-|

I had the problem once when I was writing a theme myself - only the

If you _really really_ want to use the Ice theme, I could try and help
you fix it (currently working on my 2nd e theme, but too little time to

We've upgraded to the latest version of Enlightenment (and doublechecked
that the themes were suitably updated!). if this fixes it, great, if not
I can either go to another theme or dig around myself. :)

Thank you for the offer, though!

One of the reasons I wanted to upgrade is that I can't seem to mount the CD
ROM. I have tried many different pieces of advice. The most frequently
suggested being "type mount /dev/hdc/cdrom (or whatever your cdrom is
usually hdc but maybe hdb or ?)" When I type that command in any form I get
"can't find /dev/hdc/cdrom in /etc/mtab or /etc/fstab"

I'm going to guess that its because I didn't set something up? I just
recieved Running Linux and Linux in a Nutshell both O'Reilly books. If you
happen to know what to look up in there that would be great. Or just giving
me advice directly is always appreciated! ;)

I would suggest you try
"mount /dev/cdrom" or
"mount /dev/hdc" or
"mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom -t iso9660"

You might also have a look at your /etc/fstab file - it should have rows
like:
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 exec,dev,nosuid,ro,noauto,users 0 0
/dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom iso9660 exec,dev,nosuid,ro,noauto,users 0 0

anyway, /dev/cdrom is just a symlink for /dev/hdd in my system ... and
/dev/hdd (yes, you guessed it!) is where my cd drive is.

Sorry if this has been answered already, i'm new to the list ... :-/

I'm certainly no expert, but when I first learned how to mount my CD-ROM,
I found www.control-escape.com/lx-mounting.html extraordinarily helpful.
First they explain carefully and in plain English what mounting is all
about. Then they have a nice explanation of how your /etc/fstab needs to
be set up, complete with an example. Though I'm in no position to help
you myself, maybe this site can shed some light on your troubles.

Good Luck!

Is your CD ROM jumper set to master or slave? If the jumper is set to
master, change the jumper settings to be slave (your manual should give you
information as to how to set the jumper settings).
I had the same problem and the LUG (Linux Users Group at Univ. of Maryland,
Baltimore County) helped with this and I was able to install Linux perfectly
fine.

Is this is actual command that you're using? It looks like it's missing a
space:
mount /dev/hdc /cdrom

Will mount the CD regardless of what's in mtab or fstab, assuming that
/dev/hdc is the CD drive and /cdrom is available to have something mounted on
it.

If those are true and the mount still fails, then there's going to be another,
more informative message from mount and probably some interesting stuff in the
log.

If you have an older scsi cdrom (especially one of those SoundBlaster
integrated with the soundcard) they can be a real bugger to get
working. I had one of these on my old P90, and it took a lot of
fiddling to get it working. If this is the problem, mail me privately

[techtalk] pppd problems using kppp/RH6.0

1999-11-01 Thread Becky L. Norum

This is my first posting to linuxchix. I started using Linux a couple of
months ago-- taking C was a real incentive to get xwindows working but I'm
having modem troubles.

I've been trying to configure ppp without success.
I've tried both the config options under linuxconf and kppp. I like kppp
better because you can see a terminal window and (kind of) what is going
on.

I connect to my ISP just fine. We have to activate ppp with either a
script or using terminal commands:
ppp
username
password

I then see a lot of control characters (the way it looks in windows.. so
far so good) and hit continue.

After < 30 seconds the connection is dropped. If I go to the system log
for kppp I see:

pppd(7081): pppd 2.3.7 started by root, uid 0
pppd(7081): using interface ppp0
pppd(7081): connect: ppp0 <---> /dev/ttyS0
pppd(7081): Terminating on signal 15
pppd(7081): Connection terminated
pppd(7081): COnnect time 0.6 minutes
pppd(7081): Exit

I checked the help for kppp; it suggested making sure permissions on pppd
were u+s (done) and /etc/ppp/options existed (done). Still no luck.

My modem is a Practical Peripherals MC288LCD V.34.

Any suggestions would be VERY welcome.
TIA!
Becky

[techtalk] sharing a newly installed HD...

1999-11-01 Thread Walt

I got _troubles_.

I just installed a new 9.1 gb HD in my rhl box to use solely for
network storage space. I have 4 partitions on it.

But when I mount them to directories, like:
/dev/sdd1 /home/working/a-m

where /home/working is a samba and appletalk share, none of
the clients have write access. Also, I have the directories chowned
to the the client's group, but ownership changes as soon as I mount
the drive.

Can anyone help me out here?

Thanks,

Can't really say what's happening here, but it might help if you turn
debugging on for the PPP daemon, i.e. insert "debug" in /etc/ppp/options
(or do it via configuring kppp that way). Then you can see what's
happening "low level" in the PPP protocol, i.e. if your ISP wanted
something from your computer (and didn't get it) or vice versa and thus
your ISP or your PC dropped the line...

You may post the result here for peer review, but DO delete usernames and
passwords from it. If you decide to post, /etc/ppp/options might help,
too.

> My modem is a Practical Peripherals MC288LCD V.34.

I don't think that the type of modem is an issue.
