Re: [techtalk] Newbie: my printer.
I have an HP OfficeJetPro 1150C - One of these printers with a flatbed scanner on top. There is not a Linux driver available for it. If you imagine it without the scanner, it looks like any other newish HP Deskjet, so I configured my RedHat for a Deskjet 500+. It works fine. - As a printer, I've yet to try the scanner! [techtalk] 6.1 install, revisited
I got the same thing that Tonya did: I found when I pressed Alt F3: > > mounting hdc on /tmp/rhimage as type iso9660 > creating directory /tmp/rhimage rc=0 > calling mount (/tmp/hdc, /tmp/rhimage, iso9660, -1058209791, (nil)) > removing decide file /tmp/hdc > done here > method selection completed > state saved to /tmp > error in exec of second stage loader :-( > error no such file or directory and i had trouble with the bootdisk that i got right off of the cd. What myself and a friend ended up doing is we booted into 5.2 (the then current install) and mounted the 6.1 install cd. then we ran the update from there. Worked like a charm. must be the bootdisk problem, although I tried using the 5.2 bootdisk that i had and still had the same results as trying with the 6.1 bootdisk what a weekend! and it's still monday. :-| _ "The object is not to see through one another, but to see one another through." [techtalk] Gimp, Gimp Users, Deevelpers and the like...
As I notice that the political arguments in grrltalk or issues just get more and more convuted with sopmetimes my less than asture help. Well I have begun to burn out of it. I like the the LINUX stuff on techtalk. One thing I notice that is sort of misssing is GIMP there are several groups and mailing lists ddvoted to it. I have not reeceived veey much from the any of them, except a little from the plug in registy..Are there people who want to start a gimp discusssion group or if it would coulollide here in techtalk, mentione GIMP techniquews and show off near pcitures. Pleus cute tricks we hab=ve learned, SOmrething in addition to the already nice GUM (Gimp USers Manual). I seldom see anyt GIMP material on may mailmg list. If someone can point me to the rifht one I'd loove it. NOTE WELL: I have gone arond subscringing to GIMP LIST Aafter GIMP LIST and I see little mail or infro. I am on the artists, users, win-userds, edelopers list and I see almost nothing. AM I missing something? I would certainly be wi;lling to dstsrt on help stsrt one ruin mini-tjomh imdret here Deb samd froiednd willing/ I would seem more worthwhile than endless disssucisions on "issues" which which I fear witll never get anything done and just add to thw wordls supply of pissed off people. OI already count to 10 amd at least 5.Just the old usenet arguments. One of the reasons I wanted to upgrade is that I can't seem to mount the CD ROM. I have tried many different pieces of advice. The most frequently suggested being "type mount /dev/hdc/cdrom (or whatever your cdrom is usually hdc but maybe hdb or ?)" When I type that command in any form I get "can't find /dev/hdc/cdrom in /etc/mtab or /etc/fstab" I'm going to guess that its because I didn't set something up? I just recieved Running Linux and Linux in a Nutshell both O'Reilly books. If you happen to know what to look up in there that would be great. Re: [techtalk] 6.1 install, the undead
Is your CD ROM jumper set to master or slave? If the jumper is set to master, change the jumper settings to be slave (your manual should give you information as to how to set the jumper settings). I had the same problem and the LUG (Linux Users Group at Univ. of Maryland, Baltimore County) helped with this and I was able to install Linux perfectly fine. ~Sri [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.linuxchix.org
Re: [techtalk] 6.1 install, the undead
> mount /dev/hdc/cdrom Is this is actual command that you're using? It looks like it's missing a space: mount /dev/hdc /cdrom Will mount the CD regardless of what's in mtab or fstab, assuming that /dev/hdc is the CD drive and /cdrom is available to have something mounted on it. If those are true and the mount still fails, then there's going to be another, more informative message from mount and probably some interesting stuff in the log. [techtalk] pppd problems using kppp/RH6.0
This is my first posting to linuxchix. I started using Linux a couple of months ago-- taking C was a real incentive to get xwindows working but I'm having modem troubles. I've been trying to configure ppp without success. I've tried both the config options under linuxconf and kppp. I like kppp better because you can see a terminal window and (kind of) what is going on. I connect to my ISP just fine. We have to activate ppp with either a script or using terminal commands: ppp username password I then see a lot of control characters (the way it looks in windows.. so far so good) and hit continue. After < 30 seconds the connection is dropped. If I go to the system log for kppp I see: pppd(7081): pppd 2.3.7 started by root, uid 0 pppd(7081): using interface ppp0 pppd(7081): connect: ppp0 <---> /dev/ttyS0 pppd(7081): Terminating on signal 15 pppd(7081): Connection terminated pppd(7081): COnnect time 0.6 minutes pppd(7081): Exit I checked the help for kppp; it suggested making sure permissions on pppd were u+s (done) and /etc/ppp/options existed (done). Still no luck. My modem is a Practical Peripherals MC288LCD V.34. Any suggestions would be VERY welcome. TIA! Becky [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.linuxchix.org
[techtalk] sharing a newly installed HD...
I got _troubles_. I just installed a new 9.1 gb HD in my rhl box to use solely for network storage space. I have 4 partitions on it. But when I mount them to directories, like: /dev/sdd1 /home/working/a-m where /home/working is a samba and appletalk share, none of the clients have write access. Also, I have the directories chowned to the the client's group, but ownership changes as soon as I mount the drive. Can anyone help me out here? Still no luck. Can't really say what's happening here, but it might help if you turn debugging on for the PPP daemon, i.e. insert "debug" in /etc/ppp/options (or do it via configuring kppp that way). Then you can see what's happening "low level" in the PPP protocol, i.e. if your ISP wanted something from your computer (and didn't get it) or vice versa and thus your ISP or your PC dropped the line... You may post the result here for peer review, but DO delete usernames and passwords from it. If you decide to post, /etc/ppp/options might help, too. > My modem is a Practical Peripherals MC288LCD V.34. I don't think that the type of modem is an issue.
