Re: [Talks] Updating n86 firmware

2011-10-04 Thread Bernard Hemmings
Don't do this unless you have a reason for updating. Yu won't be able to
just press select on an email message to read it. There are work around for
most issues but I am certain you will regret updating the firmware you will
have to update talks. I sold the updated e72-2 I had and started using my
bran new spare e72-2 that I had only updated once to firmware version

51.018

The problem is if you update you can't choose that version your n86 will be
updated to the latest firmware.
If you have a problem with your current firmware then update if not then if
it ain't broke don't fix it.
The problem with updating to answer your question some updates cause talks
and all installed software to be wiped some do not. If it is an on air
update meaning you don't need to connect to your pc the update comes
through either your LAN or service provider talks should be safe but if it's
a pc based update then you may or may not lose all your installed software
including talks.

Heya folks,

Loaded up me nokia software updater and had only 2 choices download and
exit, clicked on download and it installed the latest version of updater
which doesn't seem to be Jaws 12 friendly at all once it went to the new
version, so I uninstalled and reinstalled my old version again.

Can I update my firmware as a blind person alone on my n86 without losing
my

talks?
And what are the steps to do this?
Cheers,

Jim

I think it was stated on list not to long ago not to use the updater
because

of that. Now saying that it still can be updated if the phone has the over
the air feature. You can check this by going into the device manager and
pressing soft key 1 and seeing if that option is there. It will probably
say

someting like check for updates. If you do it this way you will not lose
anything you have installed on the phone.

Re: [Talks] Updating n86 firmware

2011-10-04 Thread Bernard Hemmings
It would be ok if you could roll back if for what ever reason the update did
not suit but generally you can not. In the past I was the first to update
firmware or to the latest version of software but since recent issues mainly
this year before I update anything I consider two aspects.

Will the update correct any current problems,
or will it provide new features or better accessibility.
If the answer is no to both of the above I don't implement the update.

2011-10-04 Thread Maurice Press
 Hi Jim.
Now I'm in no way starting a debate here but I don't totally agree with the
"Aint Broken, Don't Fix It" theory.
Sometimes, it's good to update as features work faster, new features are
installed and of course the phone may work more efficiently with Talks or
whatever programme you are using.

Of course it's useful to check beforehand but updates aren't just there for
the sake of it - I hope!.

Re: [Talks] Updating n86 firmware

2011-10-04 Thread Stephen Giggar
Keep in mind, the N86 is a older phone and there hasn't been a firmware
update for it for well over 1 year. So if you ahve 20.x firmware on it, then
yes it will be OK to update to the latest firmware 30.x. Keep in mind, the
N86 uses the new EMail client and you can arrow to messages and read them,
you just can't tell what is unread etc... You can't access links in emails
but the rest works. The web works as well. The N86 is a 3rd Edition phone
encase you need to know. Yes you can update the firmware over the air. The
Software update utility isn't the same thing as the firmware udpate. The
software update only updates the programs on the phone. The firmware update
updates the operating system and related files. The Firmware udpate can be
done by doing a *## from the standby screen and when it comes back,
press Options and select check for Update. Then follow the onscreen
instructions.

Hi Jim.
Now I'm in no way starting a debate here but I don't totally agree with
the

"Aint Broken, Don't Fix It" theory.
Sometimes, it's good to update as features work faster, new features
are

installed and of course the phone may work more efficiently with Talks or
whatever programme you are using.

Of course it's useful to check beforehand but updates aren't just there
for

the sake of it - I hope!.

How do you know in advance what improvements the update are going to make?
For example, you only knew when you updated the E72 that the e-mail became
relatively inaccessable. You were not able to make that informed decision
at the time though you can speak in hindsight.

A week or so ago I decided to update both the firmware and software on the

Both updated very successfully and it didn't affect talks at all.

Is this of any help.

Re: [Talks] Nokia C55MP

2011-10-04 Thread mail
Hi! I have been using the C5 00 and have found it to be very compatible with
Talks except for the following:
1. in the web browser it is not possible to select from an option in a combo
box. Apart from this, the web browser works well.
2. In the email client when you open a message, it comes in plain text. That is
all links are removed. So you cannot click on a web link or email address or
telephone number in the email. You will have to first forward it and then copy
the link and paste it! A bit cumbersome. If you can live with this limitation,
then you will find the C5 and Talks combination an excellent one.
Cheers and Susegado!

Yes this phone should work accept for issues with EMail and maybe web. It is
the C5-5Mp. There should be a space or a dash between the two five's.

Re: [Talks] Updating n86 firmware

2011-10-04 Thread Gary H. Ray
Here are step by step instructions that came fro Hai at KNFB Technology.

Gary Ray

To upgrade the firmware on your Nokia N86, please do the following:
Note: Please make sure your N86 has at least a 75% charge on the battery to
avoid any issues during the upgrade process. You may also connect your
device to an AC adapter during the upgrade process for redundancy.
1. Turn on your phone and then press * # 0 0 0 0 #. This key sequence will
display your current firmware.
2. Press the left-selection key to bring up the options menu and press
select on the first option, which should be: "Check for updates".
3. Confirm with the left-selection key when asked if you want to connect to
the internet.
4. Use your up/down arrow keys to select the internet connection type.
Note: In your situation, you want to connect to a connection called AT&T
Media Net.
You should next hear a message letting you know that the update process is
in progress. If there are any updates, A dialog will open displaying the
available updates.

Re: [Talks] Updating n86 firmware

2011-10-04 Thread Christopher Chaltain
True, and if you knew ahead of time what the improvements would be and
what problems you'd run into you could make an informed decision. As it
stands now though, you'll have to decide if the chance you'll see
improved performance or added features is worth the risk of losing the
accessibility of some function such as reading the web, access to the
help system, using the email client or accessing the list of symbols on
the phone. I haven't really looked into this, but I'd also think that
with the turn over of these phones, the handset makers aren't putting
too much time into firmware updates other than just fixing the most
serious issues, so if you're not running into one of those issues then I
suspect you won't get much out of the upgrade. Again, I'm just guessing
here, but with new phone models coming out almost yearly, you have to
wonder how much effort is really going into updating existing firmware
versus working on new firmware for new models.

Re: [Talks] Moving talks license from a phone to another

2011-10-04 Thread mail
Dear Paulo,
May I suggest you retain the Talks in your N82 until you are fully familiarised
with your new phone. This way you will not be left in a lurch in case the new
instrument misbehaves. Redundancy is the keyword. Better safe than sorry! Once
you are confident of your new phone, you are obliged to remove Talks from your
old phone. Talks has licenced you to use the software on one phone. However I
am sure they will not mind your hanging on to it during the early days with
your new phone.
Best of luck with your new acquisition and many blessings!

2011-10-04 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
Hi,

you are indeed able to leave your old N82 with Talks running on it, provided
you are the user and owner still. If you sell it on, you must remove Talks and
not sell the phone with an implied second hand Talks license attached.

You can transfer your existing Talks license for £50 or equivalent in any of
our supported currencies at www.talknav.com by simply entering the old and new
IMEI numbers.

please do advise if you have further questions.

Re: [Talks] Updating n86 firmware

2011-10-04 Thread Stephen Giggar
Yes you can update your phone just by using WiFi. This is providing you have
a WiFi network on your home internet connection. Just mark sure you ahve
yoru WiFi setup so that your phone can connect to it. You will need a SIM
card in the phone but it doesn't need to be a active sim. Also make srue
taht your battery is fully charged being after the file is downloaded to
your phone it will restart in order to do the update and you will not have a
screen reader until it is done.

I think it was stated on list not to long ago not to use the updater
because
of that. Now saying that it still can be updated if the phone has the
over

the air feature. You can check this by going into the device manager and
pressing soft key 1 and seeing if that option is there. It will probably
say

someting like check for updates. If you do it this way you will not lose
anything you have installed on the phone.

Re: [Talks] New e72 user asks for suggestions

2011-10-04 Thread Bernard Hemmings
Maps is very good and you should update that but leave the firmware as is.
Don't use the latest talks instead use version 520.3. The latest version
keeps saying browser when the browser is use also it keeps yabbering when
ever the music player is being used when you press a key to turn off screen
saver.
In my view if you update the firmware you will regret it. Don't update the
email client either. Sometimes when you run the client you will be informed
there is an update available. Softkey1 is view now, softkey2 is view later
so you should press softkey2 when ever this update appears. I did not have
to update the firmware to update maps.

No doubt you will get other people telling you to update the firmware.
I will put it this way.
When reading email messages would you rather just press select to read a
message or would you prefer to press select to open the message then press
talks down arrow twice to read the message.
If you update the firmware you will have to perform the work around method
to read your email.
If you update there are 3 key strokes to bring up the symbol table if you do
not update 1 key stroke will bring up the symbol table.
The only new feature the update will give you is those vodicons little
graphical representations of different emotions to include in your text
messages and email. As talks does not describe these at this point you
can't effectively use the only extra feature updating your e72 firmware will
give you.
In my view if you don't update the firmware and use the talks version I have
suggested you will be extremely happy with your e72. Keep in mind if you do
update you can't go back if you do not update you always have the option to
update in the future when a better version of talks becomes available.

I love my e72-2 running firmware
51.018 and talks version 520.3.

Most of the help system works using the above configuration.

I experience no memory management issues excluding when I play about 20 midi
files one after another but every nokia phone I've owned regardless of the
firmware version have had this issue from the 3630 through to the e72. So
after playing a few midi files from within gallery you should reboot the
phone.

I had 2 e72-2 handsets and sold the one running the latest firmware first
explaining to the buyer why I was selling it I even told him I would prefer
not to sell it to a blind buyer he still purchased it in the hope he could
roll back the firmware even after I told him as far as I knew this was
impossible.

Hi listers,
I've purchased e72 and it will be delivered in a few days.
I'd like to know if you have any important suggestions for a new e72 user.
Should I or should I not update firmware and nokia maps?
Do you have any preventive suggestion?
Thanks in advance, Paulo

Re: [Talks] Moving talks license from a phone to another

2011-10-04 Thread Bernard Hemmings
consider upgrading to a sim card talks license. In this way which ever
handset you put your sim card in that's where your talks license will be
located. As you have to pay to change your license over to a different
handset consider paying a bit extra so you won't have to pay in the future
to transfer your license to a new handset.

Re: [Talks] Moving talks license from a phone to another

2011-10-04 Thread Bernard Hemmings
That's why I think a sim licence is better once you remove your sim card you
also remove your license from the old handset. If for what ever reason you
need to go back to your old handset put the sim back in and the talks on
that phone will again be licensed.
You can not sell the old handset which would include a second hand talks
license. I would bet there are a lot of second hand phones out their with
second hand talks licenses attached .

Hi,

you are indeed able to leave your old N82 with Talks running on it, provided
you are the user and owner still. If you sell it on, you must remove Talks
and not sell the phone with an implied second hand Talks license attached.

You can transfer your existing Talks license for £50 or equivalent in any of
our supported currencies at www.talknav.com by simply entering the old and
new IMEI numbers.

please do advise if you have further questions.
