Re: [Talks] [UCE] Re: charging N86 with USB cable

2010-09-04 Thread Evan Silver
So, as it turns out, despite the fact that my generic charger works just
fine with at least 4 other devices to charge them, my particular USB charger
is just defective in that it will not charge my particular N86. I borrowed
a friend's generic USB charger and it worked perfectly fine to charge my
N86. The funny thing is that mine is the over-priced Radio Shack version
of the charger and his is the laughably cheap ultra-generric no-name
charger from Ebay.

So, in summary, there is nothing special that needs to be done to charge
these Nokias, you just have to test your devices to make sure they work.
Assume nothing.

Evan

Again to people the n86 doesn't use a mini USB cable. It uses a micro USB
plug. A mini plug is to big. So if you are going to tell someone what type
of cable to look for. It is a micro and not mini as far as the end that goes
in the phone.

Hi Evan,

I have an N86 and I also own the type of charger you mentioned. I have never
used it to charge the phone as I have always used the charger that came with
the phone. But I, like you, had assumed that it would be possible to use the
IPod-type charger as well, particularly, perhaps, when travelling. What I
have noticed is that the mini USB plug on the N86 is quite fragile (much
more delicate-feeling than mini USB's on other devices I have come across).
Even when using the charger supplied with the N86 my phone occasionally
doesn't start charging and I have to reconnect the cable. My thought is
that, when using the data cable with the IPod-type plug, you might have to
be quite careful that it is properly seated. Just a thought.

Best wishes,
Brian.

Yes. That is exactly the kind of charger I am talking about. I understand
that it is recommended to use the charger that is included in the phone
package. I am wondering however, if these types of generic USB AC wall
adapters can deliver either a lesser voltage or a greater voltage than would
a standard USB port of a computer. I thought the USB standard is a standard
that would need to be adhered to in order to work with a variety of devices.

Thanks again.

I know the type of charger you are talking about, the end that plugs into
the wall looks basically like any other charger but instead of having a
fixed cord with a fixed type of plug at the other end there is a USB port
like the ones on the pc on one side of the block thtat plugs into the wall
so all you have to do is plug a standard USB cable into it. The problem
still could be as many people have suggested of not the correct charging

What I would like to emphasize in my situation, is that I am indeed using
the included Nokia micro USB data/sync cable; This is the same exact cable I
use to connect my phone to a USB port of my PC for both charging and
synchronizing with PC suite. The only difference is that I would like to
occasionally use an after-market AC adapter which simply has a USB port to
plug in the Nokia Data/sync cable to charge the phone. This is useful as a
secondary charging method when I travel, and I do not want to bring a bunch
of adapters. I can just bring the appropriate cables and the one single AC
wall wart with the USB port.

I was undr the impression that this is a very common method for charging
devices which use a USB port to charge from a computer; instead we just cut

[Talks] FM radio Difficulty

2010-09-04 Thread David Griffith
I am having a problem using the FM radio on the Nokia N86 and also more
importantly it appears that I cannot read help files.

1. Problem with the FM Radio
- I have downloaded a station list from the web and there are many stations
listed.
According to the text manual I have downloaded to my PC there should be an
option to listen, alongside options such as edit move and delete.
Whilst Talks is reading out the edit, move and delete options, no listen
option is being announced.
The radio is nevertheless working as sporadically and inconsistently it
starts up when I enter the FM radio application and I can then navigate
manually by pressing left or right. If I touch any other key the radio stops
and I have to exit the application and re-enter to start the radio again.

2. The second problem is that if I select the option for help it takes me to
various help files. However , it does not read the contents of the help
window. I have tried pushing the down cursor and pressing Talks then down
cursor.
Neither works.

It would be good if someone could free me of these frustrations.

Regards

David Griffith.

Re: [Talks] FM radio Difficulty

2010-09-04 Thread David Griffith
Thanks for the swift reply and the heads up on the help files. I am
surprised Nuance has not sorted this out.

I am afraid that muting Talks has no affect on the radio functionality, well
it does not start the radio at any rate.

What happens is that, you can bring up a station list without problem.
However pressing enter or the context key on the station simply brings up
the option to move, edit or delete, but not listen.
Pressing back will take you to the main Radio window where again it will be
sullenly silent.
Going back out to the main application window and pressing enter will
re-enter the application whereupon the radio will now often start up, but
the station playing will have no relationship to the station you have left
selected in the station list.
So far I have found without rhyme or reason Heart, XFM, LBC, and BBC London
playing when I enter the application.
I think it may be an accessibility issue as the manual seems to believe that
there is a listen button somewhere on the station list but I cannot find
it.
I would settle for just having Radio 4 playing and never change the station.

David Griffith

Re: [Talks] FM radio Difficulty

2010-09-04 Thread Brian Campbell
Hi David,

It's a while since I set my radio up on the N86, but I can assure you that
it is manageable and I'll do what I can to get you started.

The way I did it was to get a list of frequencies for different radio
stations from the internet. The BBC, I think, publish a frequency guide. As
I say, it's a while ago, so it's all a bit hazy, but you will find something
by googling it. Then, with TALKS not muted, you can enter the frequencies of
the stations you want to listen to manually. Once this is done, then
navigate to the FM radio to a point where you know you can launch it without
any spoken prompts. Then mute TALKS and launch the radio. From here on, you
can scroll through your selected stations with the left and right arrows.

I hope this makes sense and good luck.

Best wishes,
Brian.

Yes I very much miss being able to access the help system even if talks came

Re: [Talks] FM radio Difficulty

2010-09-04 Thread Brian Campbell
lks Mailing List'
Subject: Re: [Talks] FM radio Difficulty

As for the radio set the station or what ever it is you want to listen to
then try muting talks. Now as for the the help screens Talks will not read
the help menus on symbian 9.3 phones because it is a sort of HTML system and

talks will not read it.

Yes you can use Talks with the 5800 express music. However you will need
help to install it. Also being this is a touch screen phone! Expect a large

I do not use the 5800 express music as a day to day phone. I only use it to
play with being I'm not happy with it. So I've never gotten fast at doing
things with it. I've only used it to the point whare I can move through the
menues and use Talks a little. I do not feel I would be a good person to
give you instructions on how to use it good with Talks. From the little I
have used it, I can tell with Talks there will be a large learning curb. It
would be like going to a IPhone from a phone that has a physical
number/keyboard. You need to learn how to move around the screen and whare
things are located on the screen.

[Talks] Nokia E72 & Web Pages

2010-09-04 Thread Blind Treasures
I just recently purchased an E72 and am having difficulty putting in

I either get thrown to the bottom of the page after only a few keystrokes or
I'll get kicked completely back to the stand by screen. Has anyone else had

Yes, I experienced the same behavior. One of many reasons why I gave
up and went to Emoze. I was able to make it stop trying to create
mailboxes though. This is going to sound crazy, but I'll tell you how
I got it to work for me. It seemed that the mailbox creation thing
only happened when I left the email program running in the background.
Unlocking the keypad is what always triggered it for me. If I
completely closed the email program, I didn't have any trouble. I had
the mail client set up to check for mail once an hour. It stil
checked like it was supposed to even though it appeared the program
was completely closed. It makes no sense to me, but that's really
what it did. If I just chose to hide the program instead of closing
it, I had the trouble you describe but closing it worked fine and it
still checked for updates. I discovered this by accident. I have no
idea if it will work for you too but it's worth a shot.

Re: [Talks] Nokia E72 & Web Pages

2010-09-04 Thread Kamil Günay
I use the Ovi Store Website, not the application. The application is not
accessible. I go to the ovi Store Website on my pc, serch for the
application I want, for example Tweets60 pro, send the Link via Text
Message to my phone and go from there to the Application for download.
It is a little bit complicated, but it works.

Regards!
Kamil

Hi!

Try pressing the select key twice on a textfield. I had the same problems on
the Nokia Ovi Store website. I could enter my username, but had problems
entering my password. Pressing select twice, like a double click, does the
trick for me.

You mean the thing that tells you that you have mail, or the one about
trying to create a mailbox? Seems like I had to restart the phone to
recover from that mailbox creation thing. I turned of the new mail
notification. It's in the settings of the mail client somewhere but I
don't remember exactly where. I can go look for it if you don't find

2010-09-04 Thread Carla savage
Hi,
I had exactly the same thing happen to me. I now close my email programme and
it checks perfectly happily. I have the active standby on which gives me an
email notification. If I press select on that, i access the email programme and
up comes my mailbox. Its just a case of disconnecting and exiting properly.
Take care,
Carla.

2010-09-04 Thread Carla savage
Hi,
just set it to check every hour in the email settings. That should do the trick.

Her-rumph. So did you get rid of the email notification thingamabob? If so,
how? That seems to have something to do with it. Once I've told it to buzz
off, the poor baby won't try and look for email again until I open the
program.

[Talks] Business Card?

2010-09-04 Thread David Griffith
I need to circulate my new phone number to the people I have put on my
contact list.
I have been told that the best way to do this is to send a business card.
I can see easily how to send the business card as an option in Contacts.

How do I set up the business card though??
At the moment, as far as I am aware, the phone is completely unaware of my
name for example.
I have gone through the phone settings wizard but could not find a relevant
area.

My version of the manual is again less than helpful, simply pointing to the
ability to send business cards as an option in contact, but not how to set
up the business card.

Again thanks for any help.
Without this list I am not sure I would have been able to muddle through so
far.

Regards

David Griffith
