Thanks to all who offered advice.
After a lot of experimentation I think I have got a usable radio.
I thought I would set out the steps and how I overcame the difficulties in
case others come across these problems.
1. Thanks to those who suggested I mute Talks whilst using the radio . The
radio became much more reliable once this step is taken. Much of my
confusion earlier was due to the fact that the radio often works with
talks
not muted but not always.
2. I have learnt that the Nokia station directory web application is
useless for obtaining the frequencies for many BBC Radio stations. My
advice
is to avoid it. Basically although I asked for London frequencies, it
installed completely incorrect frequencies. For example BBC Radio 2 was
installed by the application as having a frequency of 88.00. In fact it is
broadcasting here on 89.10. Incorrect frequencies were also inserted for
BBC
Radio 3 and Radio 4 .
3. Unfortunately the BBC website has only marginally better information
as
the alleged link to a page giving frequency for your area contains no
information about frequencies at all. All that I could find elsewhere on
the
BBC web sites were vague bands of frequencies used by stations .
4. I finally got the idea of using my digital radio in FM mode. I then
navigated to the desired stations and got my daughter to read off the
frequencies from the display.
5. I then edited the station list to insert the correct frequencies for
the
stations I wanted.
6.The radio works fine now and I am happy to navigate by pressing left and
right as I know that clear transmissions of the BBC stations I need will
be
there and fairly easy to access.
7. I think it is possible to use the station list to find a station with
the
following procedure. But I need to experiment more.
A. With talks not muted.
B. Go to stations
C. Navigate to the desired station.
D. Press back to go to main radio window.
E. Press enter. The station will not play yet.
F. Press back to exit the radio application.
G. Mute talks
H. Press enter to start the radio station with hopefully your selected
station playing.
A bit long winded but I think it may work.
The radio is fine for those occasions you are out but have not bought a
main
radio to listen to.
Regards
David Griffith.

When Talks is talking, the listen option will not show up. I just wait 5
seconds for Talks to close the audio channel and the Radio starts playing
on
it's own.

Thanks
I have just given the phone to my sighted daughter and she is finding
this
radio application confusing as well.
It is all a bit baffling.
I have the frequencies for about 20 stations loaded automatically using
the
radio station directory feature.
This works by taking you to the web and then you press the button to save
the list after specifying your location.
I have also entered various radio 4 frequencies manually again without
success. I did all this without having to mute talks.
Bizarrely however, the radio will often not work when I go into it
without
adopting the following procedure.
Enter the FM radio application. If you are lucky it may start but often
It
will be silent.
If it is silent pull out the headphones.
Talks will announce that the FM radio will not work without headphones.
Plug in the headphones again.
The enhancement window will come up so you have to press enter to accept
the headphones.
The radio will now jolt into life and start playing with very good
reception and sound .
Very strange.
I have used 3 different earphones which are all producing identical
results.
Once the radio is playing I can indeed change the stations by pressing
right
or left , but cannot find Radio 4 Radio 3 or radio 2 despite their being
listed in the station list. I cycle around stations I do not want to
listen
to.
The only direction to tune appears to be left and right. If I press up or
down the radio immediately stops and it is impossible to restart it
unless
I again take out the earphones, and repeat the rigmarole above
According to the manual all that is required is to go to the station list
and then select listen. But it is the listen button which is missing,
even
for those stations which I know I have listened to today.

David Griffith

Hi David,
It's a while since I set my radio up on the N86, but I can assure you
that
it is manageable and I'll do what I can to get you started.
The way I did it was to get a list of frequencies for different radio
stations from the internet. The BBC, I think, publish a frequency guide.
As
I say, it's a while ago, so it's all a bit hazy, but you will find
something
by googling it. Then, with TALKS not muted, you can enter the frequencies
of
the stations you want to listen to manually. Once this is done, then
navigate to the FM radio to a point where you know you can launch it
without
any spoken prompts. Then mute TALKS and launch the radio. From here on,
you
can scroll through your selected stations with the left and right arrows.
I hope this makes sense and good luck.
Best wishes,
Brian.

Thanks for the swift reply and the heads up on the help files. I am
surprised Nuance has not sorted this out.
I am afraid that muting Talks has no affect on the radio functionality,
well
it does not start the radio at any rate.
What happens is that, you can bring up a station list without problem.
However pressing enter or the context key on the station simply brings up
the option to move, edit or delete, but not listen.
Pressing back will take you to the main Radio window where again it will
be
sullenly silent.
Going back out to the main application window and pressing enter will
re-enter the application whereupon the radio will now often start up,
but
the station playing will have no relationship to the station you have
left
selected in the station list.
So far I have found without rhyme or reason Heart, XFM, LBC, and BBC
London
playing when I enter the application.
I think it may be an accessibility issue as the manual seems to believe
that
there is a listen button somewhere on the station list but I cannot find
it.
I would settle for just having Radio 4 playing and never change the
station.

David Griffith

As for the radio set the station or what ever it is you want to listen to
then try muting talks. Now as for the the help screens Talks will not
read
the help menus on symbian 9.3 phones because it is a sort of HTML system
and
talks will not read it.

Subject: [Talks] FM radio Difficulty
I am having a problem using the FM radio on the Nokia N86 and also more
importantly it appears that I cannot read help files.
1. Problem with the FM Radio
- I have downloaded a station list from the web and there are many
stations
listed.
According to the text manual I have downloaded to my PC there should be
an
option to listen, alongside options such as edit move and delete.
Whilst Talks is reading out the edit, move and delete options, no listen
option is being announced.
The radio is nevertheless working as sporadically and inconsistently it
starts up when I enter the FM radio application and I can then navigate
manually by pressing left or right. If I touch any other key the radio
stops
and I have to exit the application and re-enter to start the radio again.
2. The second problem is that if I select the option for help it takes me
to
various help files. However , it does not read the contents of the help
window. I have tried pushing the down cursor and pressing Talks then
down
cursor.
Neither works.
It would be good if someone could free me of these frustrations.

David Griffith.
