[RE-wrenches] Standing Seam with direct S-5 attachment & Grounding

2011-01-03 Thread Carl Adams
Wrenches,

In reviewing the archive I've seen multiple threads on S5 to module
attachment. I did not find any discussions on module grounding on
this type of installation or any requirements for grounding the metal
roof to which the modules are attached.

It has been suggested to me that each roof pan which has a module
attached should be grounded (perhaps under the ridge cap).

Can anyone offer suggested best practice or requirements regarding this?

With Regards

[RE-wrenches] Meter base minimum conductor size

2011-02-09 Thread Carl Adams
Wrenches,

We often use a conventional 100A meter base and analog meter as an
independent metering system for inverter output. These meters
typically have a minimum conductor size of #6 AWG. For smaller
systems the inverter output conductors are smaller than #6 AWG. We
have upsized the conductors to match the meter base requirement, but
this adds expense. I am looking for other suggestions for resolving
this.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Meter base minimum conductor size

2011-02-10 Thread Carl Adams
Thanks for the responses all. I think it's interesting that the same
type of lug is listed for smaller wire in one meter socket versus
another. I have used Mick's suggestion in the past and I will try out
the ferrule or barrel connector on our next project.

[RE-wrenches] Cable tray versus RMC

2011-02-14 Thread Carl Adams
I have a project for 250kW system. 4/12 pitch standing seem roof in
the Great Lakes snow country. My initial proposal was to get the
source strings through the roof and inside to serviceable combiner
locations. This was shot down by the architect who did not want 5
holes punched in his new roof. So we then shift to pass thru Jboxes
where we transition the PV wire to THWN-2 and into RMC back to the
desired point of entry. The electrical sub on the project has now
proposed to reduce expense by replacing the RMC with cable trays and
running USE-2 in the cable tray from the JBOX back to the point of
entry.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on the use of the cable tray and USE-2 on
the roof top.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Cable tray versus RMC

2011-02-16 Thread Carl Adams
Larry,

We do have the option of no roof penetrations and that is the course
being taken. We will have 90 source circuits in the array and 5
Jboxes on the roof and these will then be routed to a vertical wall on
the west end of the array. The strings will carry through the wall
horizontally and then on to the inverters.

My preference would have been to penetrate the roof with RMC and come
directly into the bottom of the NEMA 4X Jbox avoiding the long conduit
runs across the roof ( which will be visible from gorund level). I
have used the DEKTite
(http://www.itwbuildex.com/gcs_flashings_dektite.shtml) roof boot for
this type of penetration in the past with good success. We use the
Eternabond double face adhesive on the bottom of the boot. WIth the
boot fully under the JBox it will never see the light of day and
should last as long as the array.

The point of my original post was really to find out if the cable tray
approach has been used by other installers for managing the DC source
circuit wiring on rooftops. Will it meet code? My understanding is
that cable tray is not classified as a raceway. It it good practice?
That sort of thing. I personally would feel better if the source
circuits were in RMC.

Cheers
Carl

Ben,

I would prefer to rely on gravity rather than forced circulation. The
former has not failed to date. Check out Allen's recent article in
Home Power magazine. He offers some good suggestions on battery box
design and ventilation ( all passive or gravity activated) solutions.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Smart Utility meters

2011-03-06 Thread Carl Adams
William,
We have run into issues with smart meters. We had a customer in one of the
pilot neighborhoods. What we saw was the meter registered his production as
consumption. Effectively doubling his consumption per the meter. After some
research it was determined that while the new smart meters were indeed net
metering capable the software back at the reporting station was not net
metering capable. Solution was to install an old dumb meter which was
bi_directionally accurate. I hope this helps.

[RE-wrenches] Battery Box Labeling

2011-03-25 Thread Carl Adams
Wrenches,

Doing a quick scan of the NEC I did not find any labeling requirements
for battery boxes. I also did not turn up anything on the list
archives either. I'd be interested in what labeling other installers
are using. It seems to me something should be in place for fire
fighters. The box will contain a 500 Ah battery bank consisting of
eight AGM batteries.

Dave,
I had a good conversation at the ASES conference about Stiebel Eltron with
someone I respect in the industry. In broad strokes it was described as a
good company with good products which matches my experience. The only
negative comment from this "someone" was that their generation 1 collectors
were lousy but that their new collectors had resolved the issues.

I hope you can get the warranty replacement taken care of with out too much

The collectors’ manufacturer, Stiebel Eltron, instructed us to watch and see
if the problem resolved on its own. It did not. Stiebel then instructed us

Marco,

We have a 60kW a few blocks from the shop which was installed in 2009. It
sets on the left and center of the field. In conversation with the
facilities manager earlier this year he said they have replaced 4 modules in
the past two seasons, and "don't let anyone tell you that PV modules will
withstand an impact from a baseball". He also noted that he get's a lot of
positive comments from the players and families who see this array every
time they are at the park. How about getting an agreement where you get to
put up a PVT Hawaii sign on the field andin exchnage you agree to replace
any modules broken due to baseball strikes. You could consider any loss a
solar advertising fee. Either way, my suggestion would be stock some extra
modules and plan on replacing a few.

Jesse,
Another good option is the Soladeck. If you don't splice inside it you can
actually hide it under the array, making an uber clean look. Seal it down
with Eternabond or similar product.

[RE-wrenches] SMA -11 designation

2011-10-06 Thread Carl Adams
Hello Wrenches,

I see the an inverter model #
SB8000US and another
SB8000US-11

Same holds true for the 5,6,7k models.

I see this both in the SMA Sunny Design tool and on our distributors
catalog. Can anyone tell me what the significance is?

Thanks

Re: [RE-wrenches] AC Coupling Xantrex XWInverters toEnphaseMicroinverters

2011-10-06 Thread Carl Adams
My query to Enphase on the subject and there response

Hello,

Here is a technote which talks about how to use the Xantrex XW with a grid
tied inverter.
http://www.global-download.schneider-electric.com/852577A4005D7372/all/8FA29D94B918A0FB8525781F0072FCA7/$File/ac-coupling-app-note(976-0240-01-01_rev-a).pdf

There is speculation from colleagues as to whether it would void the Enphase
warranty to AC couple an Enphase array with the XW. That said I have an
Enphase install where the customer now would like to add batteries. Is this
solution acceptable, and if not can you offer an alternative?

 ===

Hi Carl,

Battery backup is not an intended use for our inverters, should some fault
in the system cause the inverters to fail then it would not be covered by
our warranty. Also, we don't currently have plans to support a battery
backup system, we are strictly a grid tied system and are meant to quit
producing when the grid goes down.

That's not to say that it won't work, but it definitely has a potential to
void the warranty if the inverter is used in such a way.

If you have any other questions feel free to reply to this message and I
will be happy to help you further.

Best Regards,

William Cox

[RE-wrenches] Off Grid Alarm Communicator

2011-11-24 Thread Carl Adams
Hello Wrenches,

I had a request from a local alarm company for a small PV - Battery
system to power an alarm communicator system. The parameters given
are as follows

12 V DC power supply to the gear
standby load 28 mA - this is the majority of the time
Operation peak load 2A for 2 minutes - once per day for communications
check and as required for alarm condition report

Have any of you provided such a system and if so could you share your
recommendations for a cost effective solution.

[RE-wrenches] Direct Grid Tie Upgrade - drawing attached

2009-09-02 Thread Carl Adams
Hello Wrenches,

I have a prospect who has an existing PV system and a small wind
turbine already in place. He is interested in adding additional
capacity via another small grid tie system. The attached drawing
outlines the existing and proposed installation. My question has to
do with the grid tie in. Given the existing connections for the 2
existing DGT inverters can I connect as proposed in the drawing or
would I need to perform a line side tap on the primary feed.

Alternative suggestions appreciated.

[RE-wrenches] Pitched EPDM Roof Attachment

2009-09-08 Thread Carl Adams
Hello Wrenches,

I have a job on a 3.5/12 pitched rubber roof. We have 1.5” foam under
the EPDM, then the steel decking, then the purlins. Purlin spacing
supports adequate attachment points for a conventional rail mounted
system. I have 2 questions
1) A typical L-foot attachment to the roof would likely compress the
underlying foam and result in divets at each foot. What do you
recommend to disperse the load at the point of attachment
2) What type of screw do you recommend for attaching the L-Feet to the
purlins

Re: [RE-wrenches] SS Tek Crews

2009-10-23 Thread Carl Adams
Hello Wrenches,

Pulling up this thread from earlier in the year. I have a couple of
upcoming jobs where I am attaching PV mounting structure as follows
Job 1) LFoot to metal roof into Z purlin, and Job 2) FastJack to metal
roof into bar joist.

In both of the applications I'm considering the Tek screw type
attachment to the building steel. Both the L foot and FastJack are
sized for a 5/16 - 3/8 lag or bolt. Most of the self tappers I see
are 1/4" max diameter. Should I be concerned about the undersized fit
of the fastener in the mounting attachment or are there large Tek type
screws out there I'm not finding?

Does anyone have pullout strengths for this type of attachment?

Re: [RE-wrenches] butyl on a roll

2009-11-07 Thread Carl Adams
Wrenches,

We've used the double-sided Eternabond on metal roofs for attaching
LFeet and flashing boots. Seems a great product for this application,
but it is a bit pricey. I'm glad to see the other products listed
hear and Davids cost comparison.

One anecdotal evidence of the seal provided by the Eternabond, is that
we had some short lag screws mixed in our job box, and used one to
attach an Lfoot. It did not make adequate penetration into the
structural members, and we had to to back it out and put in the
correct (longer) lag. The threads on the lag we backed out were so
covered with the eternabond goo that we had throw away the lag bolt
rather than fowl anything and everything that came in contact with it.

Cheers

Re: [RE-wrenches] SMA GFDI Err Tip was PV Powered vs SMA

2009-12-03 Thread Carl Adams
We have seen this error on the SMA 3000 and SMA4000 units, the 5,6,
and 7K do not seem to exhibit the problem. The disconcerting thing to
me is that if you do nothing and just let the inverter stay ON, the
error will clear itself in about 20 - 40 minutes. The error may clear
on the first day of service, reappear the following morning, but again
clear itself after 20 - 40 minutes. After the initial glitch we have
had no issues with these inverters. SMA tech support were forth right
in acknowledging the issue and dead on that no action or intervention
was required to clear it, just some burn in time. Still a little
disconcerting, but only time will tell.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Best angle - direct grid tie

2010-01-05 Thread Carl Adams
Drake,

Attached is a PDF which is the result of using PVWatts to perform an
analysis which may be helpful.

Assumption 1: No shading at the site and a due south facing array.
The module tilt is varied from 0 to 90 degrees and the array estimated
production leads you to select an optimum tilt.

Assumption 2: Now that the optimum tilt is established evaluate the
effect of array azimuth at this tilt angle.

The solar radiation per time of day is evaluated to indicate the
potential adjustments which might be required based on shading at
various times of day but the Path Finder readings from the site should
be used for a more accurate assessment.

[RE-wrenches] Power Factor and Grid Tied PV

Looking for other info I came across this article, which seems to
cover the subject from an academic standpoint.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Solar accumulation panel

2010-01-12 Thread Carl Adams
Andrew,

I have done this for multiple installs, most recently on a commercial
three phase 240 install (with 6 SMA 7000s) and a residential two
circuit Enphase install. The plans were submitted to the AHJ and
approved in both cases without question. I labeled these per 705.10
and 690.64.

The commercial install was as you suggest to simplify the grid
connection. The residential Enphase install was done to provide a
single point of metering for the system.

I hope this helps

[RE-wrenches] Load or Line Side was Solar accumulation panel

2010-01-13 Thread Carl Adams
Wrenches,

I just had an AHJ require me to switch the load and line connections
on the fused AC disconnect which sits between the inverters (AC
Combiner panel) and the point of utility connection. The inverter
was connected on the LOAD side of the fused disconnect, and while the
AHJ agreed this was the safest configuration, (when the disco is OFF
the fuses are safe to remove) he insisted that the PV array should be
connected to the LINE side of the disconnect since it is supplying
power rather than acting as a LOAD. Any similar experience or
arguments I can make based on the NEC which might help change the
position of the AHJ next time round? I still believe our initial
installation represents the safest configuration.

[RE-wrenches] Fwd: SMA Secure Power Supply

2013-07-20 Thread Carl Adams
Hello Wrenches,

I'm considering the new SunnyBoy SB3,4,5000 TL-22-US inverters for upcoming
projects. The new secure power supply feature seems like a good selling
point. At this point I am most interested in field experience from those
who have already installed these units.

Here is what I have learned from reading up a bit.

My initial impression was that the electrical switch and outlet shown in
the tech bulletin, youtube video, and discussed in webinars I have seen,
was an actual "hardware product option". This is not the case. It is
functionality available in the unit as points of connection. The intent is
for the installer to pickup the necessary switch and outlet at the local
supply house and make the connections.

One other thing I learned is that between early marketing and product
availability the "functionality" name was changed from "Emergency Power
Suppy (EPS)" to "Secure Power Supply (SPS)" due to NEC code issues.

Another point of confusion for me was in reading the SB3k - 5kTL
installation manual. In the manual, the discussion of the SPS uses the
term "miniature circuit breaker". My initial thought was this reference
was to the backfed circuit breaker for the inverter, or a separate circuit
breaker integral to the inverter. Not the case, just bad translation from
German to English. The reference, is to the off the shelf switch, the
installer is to use to field install the SPS.

Hope this is helpful, and again I'd like to here from those of you who have
already deployed these units.

[RE-wrenches] SMA Secure Power Supply

2013-07-22 Thread Carl Adams
Nick,

I guess I don't see this as a weakness but rather operating as designed.
If the design intent was to allow the grid tied solar array to provide a
limited power source during a grid outage, during daylight hours, with no
batteries required, it seems this hits the mark.

I know these units went through some beta testing early this year, so I
would still appreciate any feedback from any wrenches who have actually

I understand that is a good selling point, but the major weakness is that
it won't work at night and only will provide the amount of power that is
available from the sun, so not so good for stormy conditions.

Corey,

For interior applications I am using the Avery 5522 Weatherproof labels
successfully on the the SMA inverters as well as other equipment. For
external applications I use engraved plastic laminate labels from Action
Engraving. They come with a double faced adhesive back which to date has
held up very well.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Enphase failures

2013-08-04 Thread Carl Adams
Marco,

Here is a summary of our experience with Enphase to date
  13.1% overall failure rate 25.6% M190 failure rate 25.0% D380
failure rate 2.1% M210 failure rate 5.6% M215 failure rate

We have had two full site upgrades last year. One from M190s - 215s, the
other from D380s to M215s. No problems at those sites since the swap out.
We have two other M190 sites in line to be swapped for 215s once the 90 day
monitoring period is up.

Just swapped 3 of 15 inverters on a site last week. When I showed up with
the 3 new inverters two more had died, they are now enroute from Enphase.
Those failures are reflected in the above statistics.

Re: [RE-wrenches] SMA E-Panel and Inverter OCPD

2013-09-17 Thread Carl Adams
boB,

I see and understand the functionality of the input-output bypass switch
(breakers). The other breaker labeled "Sunny Boy(s) Input" in the drawing
and labeled "Grid Tie Inverter" on the unit, seems to provide a single OCPD
for the combined input of the two inverters. The SB 5000 has a maximum
output current of 22A and the SB3000 a 15A max output. Seems we should
have output breakers on each inverter circuit prior to connection to the
SMA E-panel busbar.

It seems there are a couple of options.
1) A small AC combiner panel with a suitably sized breaker protecting each
inverter and #6 conductors run from the AC combiner to the SunnyBoy input
bus bar in the E-panel. The 60A OCPD ("grid Tie Inverter") in the E-panel
protecting this circuit.
2) Two suitably sized AC breakers installed on the extra DIN rail on the
right hand side of the E-panel and output of these breakers feeding the
busbar.
3) Run #6 conductors from the E-Panel Sunny Boy Input Busbars back to each
inverter output circuit, and let the 60A "Sunny Boy(s) Input" breaker
provide the OCPD for both inverters. Not sure this option passes muster
with a single OCPD protecting two devices.

I hope that clarifies the question.

Thanks
Carl

[RE-wrenches] Safely inducing arc fault and ground fault in a completed array

2013-11-25 Thread Carl Adams
Wrenches,

We just completed an install with the SMA STP12000TL-US. I would like to
induce two fault conditions into the system 1) ground fault, and 2) arc
fault, in a manner that is both safe to equipment and personnel, in order
to see how these units respond to those conditions, and in particular how
the arc fault is cleared, after detection. (assuming it is detected)

Any suggestions appreciated.

Don,

Thanks for the pointer to SNapNRack. We like their racking for residential
systems, but have not used the 4 hole standoff kit. So on a white membrane
roof what is used to seal the roof cone flashing to the membrane, and what
is the height of the roof cone flashing. It seems the cone height will
determine the minimum standoff shaft height.

You mentioned you don't use the other hardware. Are just attaching an

[RE-wrenches] UPS disturbance with SMA Inverters

2014-08-04 Thread Carl Adams
Hello Wrenches,

I have a site which is experiencing nuisance disturbance of the computer
UPS systems at the site. The site owner "suspects" this is due to the PV
system which is a 50 kW system using 6 SMA SunnyBoy inverters. The
nuisance disturbance is a clicking noise in the UPS units. The disturbance
is not enough to cause the UPS to engage, so it seems to be a small
disturbance on the AC power. The site owner "suspects" the inverters are
the source of this disturbance since 1) It seems to only occur when we have
a good solar day. 2) If the inverters are shut down the problem goes away,
and if you start up the inverters the problem exhibits again.

The site was commissioned in March of 2012 and has had no problems till
this issue last month. In reviewing the event log on Sunny Portal there
are no inverter anomalies. SMA tech support had not run into this issue
and had no ideas, they too agree the inverters are not reporting any
anomalies.

The problem is not persistent but rather intermittent making this harder to
troubleshoot.

So my questions are
1) Has anyone else seen this sort of issue before, related to SMA SunnyBoy
inverters.
2) Can you recommend an AC power monitoring tool which would support
frequency and voltage monitoring on the AC line. Perhaps one data set on
the circuit feeding the computers and another on the inverter output
circuit.

For clarity the six SunnyBoys feed into an AC Combiner panel which backfeeds
into the building main distribution panel. The service is 240V single
phase.

Re: [RE-wrenches] UPS disturbance with SMA Inverters

2014-08-04 Thread Carl Adams
Bob, Ray, Glenn,

Thanks for the responses. We could cycle through the inverters and see if
it is one, or some combinations of inverters, which is causing the problem.
This results in a minimum of 6 trials. If it is a combination of
inverters many more.

Any feedback on the idea of monitoring the AC circuits; computer feed and
combined inverter output? Seems to me this might provide a one step
correlation between the event and the cause. Just not sure what equipment
to suggest for this.

Could be there is some other cause, unrelated to the inverters. AC unit
kicking on, etc. Though they do not see any lights dimiming/brightening,
or any other notable change in electrical equipment at the sight.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Conduit supports on sloped composite shingle roofs

2014-09-22 Thread Carl Adams
Chris,
You might consider the DPW EasyFeet. They mount to comp shingles with five
course thread torques screws. Kind of a wide L foot.

http://dpwsolar.com/images/PDFs/ApplicationInformation/Easy_Feet_Installation_Guidelines_Version_1_Rev_E.pdf
You can come off of that with a piece of DPW P6 aluminum channel or square
aluminum rail and then mount stainless steel mini for conduit supported at any
height you wish. Lead time on the easy feat is sometimes long.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Modules over vents

2014-09-24 Thread Carl Adams
Bruce,
We routinely cut off DWV as suggested by earlier posts so that they are at
least 1 inch below the surface of the back of the module.

To be clear these are sewage intake air vents and not exhaust vents for heating
appliances.

We do place a quarter inch wire cloth over the cut off vent and apply a four
inch stainless steel hose clamp around the pipe just to prevent foreign objects
from entering the vent pipe.

trust the module backing material to a concentrated long term dose; which

Re: [RE-wrenches] Discrepency between inverter kWH reading andsolar production meter

2015-05-23 Thread Carl Adams
Kevin,
My experience with inverter based kilowatt hour readings is that they are
always optimistic. My experience with SolarEdge shows the SolarEdge
kilowatt hour reading runs about 2 percent higher then the utility grade
meter. I have found similar discrepancies with SMA , Fronius and other
inverter manufacturers.

Re: [RE-wrenches] SnapNrack

2015-06-25 Thread Carl Adams
We standardized on snap and rack about 3 years ago as well. Previous to
that we used a number of systems unirac, iron Ridge etcetera.

Good hardware and easy to assemble. We recently installed our first Snap
and Rack residential ground mount. That installed very nicely and it priced
out better than the UNIVRAC ULA.

The online configurator for the residential ground mount has a few bugs. A
call to snap and rack tech support resolved the issues and they ran the
configurations thru their internal tools to verify measurements. They were
very accessible and helpful in their response.

Hello Wrenches

I am interested to see if any of you have the Outback Optics RE up and
running. I attended a seminar recently and they could not demo it. I have
watched the canned demo on the website, but the engineer in me has a

Hello Fellow wrenches,

I have a couple of failed Mage solar AC modules. These are Mage Solar

[RE-wrenches] Source Circuit Disconnect - 690.14 (C)(1)

2016-01-04 Thread Carl Adams
Fellow Wrenches,

We recently failed an inspection on a new PV installation
We are operating under the 2008 code
I have attached a small sketch of our conduit routing to clarify things.

Inspectors note post inspection ...provide a photovoltaic disconnecting
means per 690.14 (C)(1)

During his inspection the inspector was unhappy that we had entered the
attic space with the DC source circuits, saying we should have run the
conduit across the roof and kept it outside. Since we entered the building
we would need to add a DC disconnect in the attic to meet code. My thought
is that we fall under the exception listed (690.31(E)) since all source
circuit internal to the dwelling are in metallic raceways. I'd like to
hear other wrenches chime in on this.

Our reason for routing things as we did was to keep the installation
aesthetics first class and minimize unsightly conduit runs.

Code section follows

690.14 Additional Provisions. Photovoltaic disconnecting
means shall comply with 690.14(A) through (D).690.14

(C) Requirements for Disconnecting Means. Means
shall be provided to disconnect all conductors in a building
or other structure from the photovoltaic system conductors.
(1) Location. The photovoltaic disconnecting means shall
be installed at a readily accessible location either on the
outside of a building or structure or inside nearest the point
of entrance of the system conductors.
Exception: Installations that comply with 690.31(E) shall
be permitted to have the disconnecting means located remote
from the point of entry of the system conductors.
The photovoltaic system disconnecting means shall not
be installed in bathrooms.

 690.31 (E) reads as follows
(E) Direct-Current Photovoltaic Source and Output
Circuits Inside a Building. Where direct-current photovoltaic
source or output circuits of a utility-interactive inverter
from a building-integrated or other photovoltaic system are
run inside a building or structure, they shall be contained in
metal raceways, or metal enclosures, from the point of penetration
of the surface of the building or structure to the
first readily accessible disconnecting means. The disconnecting
means shall comply with 690.14(A) through (D).

Lena,

We've been installing the Solar Edge product for a few years now and are
experiencing good reliability. I think we have had 2 optimizers which were
DOA from the factory. One was completely dead the other had a 25% reduced
output. No problems with warranty replacements.

[RE-wrenches] SolarEdge comm card failures

2016-04-18 Thread Carl Adams
Hello Wrenches,

Anyone experiencing issues with comm card failures on SolarEdge inverters?
We have some systems installed in 2012 exhibiting similar behaviors. The
systems are producing data, it is registering on the inverter, and our
independent utilty meter, but is not reported to the SolarEdge portal.
Next day(s) it reports production to the portal but the missing data is
never filled in. I have attached a small graph from the portal dashboard.

Typically if a network connection goes down, and then is restored the data
should be uploaded after the connection is back on line. In this case
their remains a hole in the data, for that day, indicating that data was
never uploaded.

We had one system which exhibited this "missing data" symptom on accasion
over a 2 month period of time. This was diagnosed, as a failing comm
card. Once that was replaced we have not seen the issue recur for that
site. But now we are seeing similar behavior from three other sites, all
installed a in the second half of 2012.

Just wondering if anyone else has encountered this.

Thanks

Re: [RE-wrenches] SolarEdge comm card failures

2016-04-19 Thread Carl Adams
Howie,

Thanks for your response. I would agree that we have not seen this problem
with systems installed after 2012. The technology has improved, and the
Comm card in the inverter has been thru several iterations since then. I
would also agree that SE has improved on their tech support response time
this year and the "with the paint by numbers" description of tech support
response. Based on my limited experience, I surmised a failing
communications card in the inverter. I had a hell of a time convincing SE
tech support this was the issue.

We were on site troubleshooting this today and after checking that we could
ping Google from the inverter connection, and establish a TCP connection to
the SolarEdge server via the laptop on that connection, and trying to step
thru the inverter programming with a non responsive push button interface,
the SE tech agreed to send us a new comm card. But only after rolling a
truck, jumping through a few hoops on the phone with SE support, did we get
that agreement. I felt like most of this troubleshooting was above what I
could expect of most field techs, without significant computer experience.

Note this is the card which contains the digital display for the inverter,
and the one which interfaces with the push button display on the inverter.
This is not an add-on accessory. One other symptom of this problem is that
the push button interface for scrolling through the SE inverter menus is
intermittent in its response. You may push the button multiple times
before you get a response on the screen. Same behavior if you use the push
buttons under the front cover of the inverter. Another symptom is that the
indicator does not display on the first and sixth display screens.
indicates the unit is unable to connect to the Solar Edge portal.

I have two other sites which exhibit similar symptoms; missing data reports
to the portal on random days in the past few months. The inverters are
working fine but the data is not being uploaded to the portal on some
days. I asked SE for a part number for the comm card so I could stock a
spare. Unfortunately they were unable to provide a part number, which I
could order from my distributor and take to the site to troubleshoot these
sites. Apparently these are only supplied after you jump through enough
hoops with tech support. I found this aggravating to say the least.

I hope this is helpful.

With Kind Regards

Re: [RE-wrenches] Failure Modes Solar Edge

2016-05-02 Thread Carl Adams
Mac,

I have not encountered that failure mode. Typically only the module
attached to that Optimizer is out of production if the optimizer fails.

I would second Howie's comment about using the online alerts. They will
alert for Optimizer, string, or inverter failure, sending you an email if
anything goes wrong. We typically set up the customer and our monitoring
email account to receive these alerts.

[RE-wrenches] MAGE AC modules

2016-05-27 Thread Carl Adams
Hello Wrenches,

I installed some Mage AC modules a few years back. These use the
SolarBridge micro inverter. I have had a couple of these fail and would
like to have one in stock for trouble shooting. I currently have one which
appears to be failed based on the online data, but according to SunPower
support I need to go onsite check all connections and measure all voltages
and then call them with data to get the RMA started. They tell me I cannot
buy a spare to pop in while I am there, as I am not a SunPower dealer. If
any of you have one of these you would part with contact me off list.

Jason,

It looks like the 14k is 208/120V but the 20TL is 277/480

Re: [RE-wrenches] 20 kW 208/120 inverters

2016-06-13 Thread Carl Adams
Jason, Howard,

I could certainly use multiple smaller inverters. I was just looking to
see if there was a larger 208 inverter available. Seems the upper limit on
the 208Y/120V inerters is at about 14kW. One larger inverter is almost
always less expensive than two smaller ones in terms of initial expense and
installation labor.

Thanks for your suggestions

Re: [RE-wrenches] Sonnen Battery & Outback Radian Inverter

2016-06-18 Thread Carl Adams
Drake,

Pricing is for the package, for Eco 2-8 you get the Radian 4kW plus the
kWh batteries specified. For the Eco 20 - 16 you get the Radian 8kE plus
the kWh batteries specified. Here is a price sheet. Installer cost would
be MSRP - 15% plus shipping.
Reading the link, I'm not sure what the following sentence refers to, the
price of the system or the batteries.

*"The batteries are priced at $10,000 for the 4 kWh model up to $24,000 for
the 16 kWh model." *Literally it says that the cost is $10K for 4 KWh
batteries. When compared to the $24K system cost for a system 4 times as
big, it would seem that they are referring to whole system costs with the
same equipment but more batteries.

They wouldn't sell 4 times as many batteries for 2.4 times the cost (would
they)?

If it is 4 kWh of batteries alone for $10K, that wouldn't be much of a
deal, even if they did last 10 years. We are doing *far* better than that
with AGM, which should last 7 years. If it is for the entire system, it
might start looking competitive.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Add-On to DGT, string inverter, w/Different Modules on 2nd string

2016-06-21 Thread Carl Adams
Ash,

I'd look at the Solar Edge 5000 inverter with P300 optimizers or the SMA
5000TL. Either way you end up with two strings, one old and one new. Less
work with the SMA route. Better performance with the SE. With the SE route
the owner could actually see the performance improvement on the older SW175
string. The owner can find a new home for the old inverter on EBAY

[RE-wrenches] Rapid ShutDown Requirement

2016-07-19 Thread Carl Adams
Hello Wrenches,

I am working on a ballasted roof mount system. 46 kW using four roof
mounted Fronius 10.0-3 208V inverters. The system consists of 4 sub-arrays
with one inverter for each sub array. Discussing the rapid shutdown
requirements with a colleague he said if we keep the inverters located
within 10 ft of the array we do not need to add any rapid shutdown
devices. The inverter AC ouput disconnects would satisfy the requirement.

Does that match your understanding?

Thanks in advance

Our crew wear CougarPaws boots when working on asphalt shingles. Very
gentle on the roof and added traction is a great safety improvement on

[RE-wrenches] Amphenol and MC4 crimper

2016-09-21 Thread Carl Adams
Hello Wrenches,

I wanted to ask you about Helios and MC4 crimpers. I bought a set of
theAmpenol H4 crimp teeth and loactor for my Reinstag crimper some time
back, to handle the Amphenol H4 connectors They work well but require
changing the locator for femal and male crimps and they are expensive. I
see this tool is out there.
<https://www.aeeexpress.com/crs/storeus/browse/productDetailSingleSku.jsp?productId=094-7#>
CRIMP TOOL 2.5MM-6MM, HELIOS 4, PV-670508-000
094-7

It seems a less expensive solution and simpler than the Reinstag set. Any
experience with this? What are your thoughts.

[RE-wrenches] SMA Sunny WebBox mobile/wireless options

2012-01-02 Thread Carl Adams
Hello Wrenches,

I have an existing customer who has a Sunny WebBox which has been in
service for several years with no issues. He is happy with the
service. He is leaving the country for 1 year for work and wants to
continue the service while he rents out his house. He can't leave his
internet service in place, to which the WebBox is now hard wired, and
would like to have a mobile/wireless option for keeping this in
service.

I also have a new install on a farm where the family is planning to
move into sometime after the PV system/WebBox is in place and would
like to suggest a wireless option for them to use while the house is
being renovated and prior to their wired internet connection being in
place.

Have any of you dealt with this situation previously, and if so do
you have any working installations running over mobile services?

Re: [RE-wrenches] MC4 Box connectors

2012-03-02 Thread Carl Adams
Dana, Jay, William,

Thanks for your responses.
AEE did not carry the box/bulhead MC4 only the standard cable connector.
PV-Cable suggested by Jay had the connectors at $2.97 each, and can
provide these in small quantities

William, I would be interested in seeing a photo of the new technique
if you could share it.

[RE-wrenches] Sunny Portal kwh/kwp specific yield

2012-04-27 Thread Carl Adams
Hello Wrenches,

I have a number of sites on SMA and monitor them via daily emails and
the sunnyportal. The "Plant List" provides a feature I like whereby
all plants are listed in order of their specific yield (kwh
produced/kw installed). There are two columns to this data, one for
the current month, the other for the year. As I look at the monthly
column I see the plants listed as I would expect Best performing
arrays at the top Worst performers at the bottom. The second column
(annual specific yield) does not seem to line up with my expectations.
Has anyone looked at this and if so can you offer any insights?

[RE-wrenches] Solar Attic Fans

2012-06-08 Thread Carl Adams
Fellow Wrenches,

I have had several prospects and customers ask about installation of
solar attic fans. One customer had a roof replacement prior to our PV
install and the roofing contractor installed a solar attic fan. I
could not make out any name brand on the unit, but it was quite noisy
for a brand new device. Makes me wonder about it's longevity. Have
any of you a good quality brand you would recommend for those
customers who are interested?

[RE-wrenches] SI5048 Commissioning Test

2012-10-22 Thread Carl Adams
Hello Wrenches,

We have commissioned a new SI system (240V single phase residential) and
want to ensure testing is adequate to ensure the system will perform as
desired.

The system consists of two SI5048s, 5kW PV array, SB5000US, battery bank,
transfer switch, backup generator, and supplemental digital relay to
activate DigIn signal on Grid DOWN condition.

I am sure there are many test scenarios to run through to qualify the
system. Here is one.
Test Case 1

   1. Verify SOC is 95%+
   2. Modify GnSocTm1Str and GnSocTm1Stp to artificially high numbers (85%
   and 90% respectively)
   3. Power off SB5000US to eliminate charging from solar
   4. Simulate Grid Outage
   5. Verify Transfer switch moves to generator input position
   6. Verify DigIn signal to SI5048 reflects grid state (grid is down)
   7. Monitor SOC and verify that when SOC reaches GnSocTm1Str (85%) the SI
   starts the generator
   8. Monitor SOC and verify that when SOC reaches GnSocTm1Stp (95%) the SI
   stops the generator
   9. Power ON the SB5000US
   10. Reset GnSocTm1Str and GnSocTm1Stp to system specific values.
   11. End Test

Another test would be to bring the grid back up after step 7 or after step
8 and verify correct behavior.

I would love to hear from those who have commissioned similar SI
configurations, about other scenarios we should be testing to adequately
qualify the system.

[RE-wrenches] PVSYST or similar analysis needed

2012-11-26 Thread Carl Adams
Hello Wrenches,

I am in need of an analysis for a large battery backup system. I am
looking for a sweet spot in PV array size and battery bank size. I need
this modeled on a time of day basis, and evaluated monthly thru a full
calendar year. I am told that PVSYST can perform such an analysis but I
neither have the tool nor the experience using it to perform the modeling,
so I am looking to hire the job out to someone who does. If any of you
have the software and expertise to use it please contact me off list for

Re: [RE-wrenches] finding array ground faults

2013-02-06 Thread Carl Adams
Marco,

I second Chris' suggestion. Disconnect all strings at the combiner. Check
VOC PV+ to ground, and PV- to ground on each string, and PV+ to PV-. This
should point you to the faulty string. If the string consists of 10
modules, each with VOC of 30 volts then you should see +300V from PV+ to
PV- (assuming negatively grounded array), and 0 volts PV+ to ground, and 0
volts PV- to ground. If you find a string where you see +60V from PV+ to
ground, and -240V PV- to ground, your ground fault is on that string and is
likely between the 2nd and 3rd module as you move from PV + of the string
to PV-. (2 * 30V voc = 60V) (8 *30V voc = 240V).

Hope this helps

[RE-wrenches] Squirrel/leaf guard for solar array

2013-02-15 Thread Carl Adams
Hello Wrenches,

I serviced an array yesterday which had accumulated a large amount of
leaves under the modules. No evidence of squirrels at this point, but I
know there has been discussion of protective fencing around arrays to
prevent squirrels moving in and I wonder if the same system might keep the
leaf debri from building up under the array. Do any of you have
suggestions for materials and methods to do this. A link to photos of
installed projects would be appreciated.

Re: [RE-wrenches] DC generators

2013-03-05 Thread Carl Adams
Very interesting Jay,

A customer just asked me two days ago, if it would be possible to install a
DC Generator to feed his six SunnyBoy 6000s at night. He was thinking of a
water cooled genny from which he could harvest heat while also providing
power to the inverters. He said he thought the economics could work with
the current low NG prices, but only during the winter months when he has a
need for the excess heat being generated.

The Kohler you point out doesn't have the voltage specs to match the
SB6000s, but I'd be interested in other thoughts on this approach.

[RE-wrenches] Modules approved for horizontal mounting

2013-04-19 Thread Carl Adams
Hello wrenches,

I have a request for quote, which shows modules mounted horizontally on a
supporting structure. This is being done more for show than production
obviously. The approved modules in the bid spec are Sharp, Renesolar, LDK,
and Trina.

Does anyone know if these modules are approved, by the manufacturer, for
flat (horizontal) mounting, or have a good point of contact with any of
these manufacturers so I can get a quick answer direct from them? We have
a 20 psf design snow load in our area.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Enphase "AC Frequency Out Of Range"

2013-05-13 Thread Carl Adams
Passing this info along

One of our Enphase customers reported that his local electric utility
installed a new metering system, TWACs by Aclara. Once they installed a
new meter on the service, the system began registering ACFOOR (AC Frequency
Out Of Range) messages. He contacted Enphase and they informed him that
this issue has occurred previously on other installations where the utility
has a TWACs metering system (Please reference case number 260517).
Enphase applied a firmware upgrade to the site and that has resolved the
issue.
