[RBW] Re: Stolen Royal H Mixte Ventura

2013-08-16 Thread Tom Virgil
I am very happy that you have this bicycle back in your hands. I don't
have anything to add to comments about the intermediate steps (I don't
disagree with most of them). Sorry you had to put in an additional $500.00
to *ransom* it back and I do wonder about the guile of the person who sold
your own bike back to you. It stinks of extortion. It's a reminder to me
for extra attention to protect those things that are a joy to us.

Best regards,

Tom

You are going to do well. If you take the recommended advice, get off the
bicycle and take pictures from time to time, post them to a public site,
and send us a "Proof that it happened" link, we are going to be in awe of
your accomplishment You go, Jack.

[RBW] Re: Calling all SoCal Rivsters S240 August 23rd anyone? See details below.

2013-08-16 Thread Tom Virgil
Dear SoCal Rivsters,

Been monitoring things. I live about the same distance from the coast as
San Mateo is from San Onofre. Southern Orange County and Northern San
Diego have many micro climates, so I cannot say what I see is predictive of
what we will see on the 23rd.

Up until today, the fog has been rolling in and we have overcast from
about 4:00 PM. Oddly, it recedes between 6:30 for about an hour and then
rolls back in.

Tonight, we had one of those "Diamond Girl" kind of evenings where the sun
shown on the beach until setting. Samuel Hillborne and I were down at the
Torrey Pines parking lot to see it (testing camping gear).

I am hoping we have this kind of night for the 23rd. No matter what, we
are going to have a good time.

Take care,

Tom

2013-08-17 Thread Tom Virgil
Another "Diamond Girl" morning (fog burned off on beach by 8:00 AM) and
evening (still good). Non bike enthusiast and non Rivendell fan wife rode
with me to Edamame on Carmel Valley Road for a sunset Japanese dinner.
 Sweet times.

[RBW] Re: Calling all SoCal Rivsters S240 August 23rd anyone? See details below.

2013-08-18 Thread Tom Virgil
Ahem. Adult beverages. Thinking that a beer run (or wine or what have
you) back into town after unloading and setting up camping gear might be
the ticket. Can't see myself toting 12 pack (need enough to share) and ice
on top of my teetering load. Don't like shopping and leaving bike out side
locked or unlocked, so would prefer a partner on such a mission.

It the prevailing desire is for a Riv dinner in town or group campout, I am
good with either. Just need to know ahead so I don't pack too much. Take
out for dinner (bring to camp on adult beverage foray) and collaborative
breakfast is also an option. I am pretty easy to please, just need to know
what we are doing.

Best regards,

Tom

2013-08-19 Thread Tom Virgil
Hugh's turkey chili looks delicious, and I don't want to dis him, but I
really don't want to burden him with portaging it down from Irvine on his
bike.

Google maps indicates a 3.6 mile
cruise
 down
from San Mateo to Sonny's.

Recommend we pass the hat for Hugh's dining and liquid refreshment for all
of his trouble setting this event up.

Just out of interest, how do you folks secure your bikes while dining? I
have not owned a bike lock since grade school. Since I left grade school,
my policy has been to never let my bike out of my sight.

Street view of
Sonny's.

Not sure about the bike parking situation.

Do you leave your gear back in camp?

Best regards,

Tom

[RBW] How much do you carry on your S24O?

2013-08-20 Thread Tom Virgil
I am not interested in fern elves who sleep under leaves or those who can
build a house at the campsite from available materials

What is a nominal weight?

With everything I could want, I am coming in at +22 pounds. I am trying to
pare that away. If I were to take everything, it would include,,,

  Sleeping bag

 Sleeping bag liner

 Compression Sack

 Pillow

 Pad

 Tent

 Tent Footprint

 French Press

 Titanium cup

 Stove

 Fuel bottle

 Cooking pot

 Utensils

 bucket

 camp suds

 towel

 sacks

 egg holder

 bottles

and a few other things for breakfast, camp clothes.

Having accumulated all of this from backpacking, I am now figuring out
where to pare down.

I have been practicing with Sam and the weight.

Best regards,

Tom

[RBW] Re: How much do you carry on your S24O?

2013-08-21 Thread Tom Virgil
I am very appreciative of the comments offered here. I live in Del Mar
hill country. Once I leave my block, there are 14% grades in either
direction for a 200 foot elevation gain in .5 miles. Average grade is 7%.
I rode Sam up and down several times with the unoptimized load (22 lbs)
and while I am sluggish compared to an unfettered bike, but I don't think
we will need a cardiologist on call. Sam is stable with the load. That is
very cool. I am using a large Sackville saddle bag and a Sackville BarSack
on the front. At tis point, I have to lash the sleeping pad and compression
sack encased sleeping bag outside of the bike bags. I think I could do
better. Looking forward to this to test things out and see what works.

I had to laugh out loud at the porcelain mug, camp watermelon, and waffle
kit comment from Christopher. Although, the waffle images on that Panther
Creek Gran Carbo were a class act. Consider this one a shakedown. We'll
see what works and what doesn't without a lot of drama. After a few
trials, I might be inclined to bring a pizzlle maker. but we'll wait and
see how that works out. Don't know if Rivers like pizzlles (I do, buttered
with Nutela).

My Trangia came with a strainer/lid that can act as a cutting board. And I
have knives. Not bringing guns.. Anne's idea about a headlamp is good.
Don't have time to go to REI to get one, but it will be on my list. USB
bike light held in mouth while using both arms will have to do for now.

Ride free, rivers,

Tom

[RBW] Re: Calling all SoCal Rivsters S240 August 23rd anyone? See details below.

2013-08-24 Thread Tom Virgil
Now this was a good time. I hope that the SoCal Rivsters are safely
arrived home or will soon be.

Much appreciation to Hugh for setting this up, choosing San Mateo,
selecting this campsite, and reserving it for us. Hugh made it happen.
And hosted it. He helped folks set up tents, fix tires, heat water and
spent some time with each person expressing friendship, humor, or some
connection about bikes.

I met some very nice people. All of them.

There was bike talk. All very cool bikes being ridden. Liquid refreshment
in general, and remarkably high quality sipping whiskey to nip off of in
flasks.

David's stealth appearance after hours had major benefits. Somehow he
managed to visit a grocery store and score some very nice things that he
shared in the morning. I have no idea how he pulled that off at that hour
of the night time.

I didn't get to do every thing due to work commitments. But it was the
perfect S24O. A quantum step up in interdicting a busy schedule.

Best regards,

Tom

Thank you everyone.

David's bike caused some serious bike envy. I have searched J.P.Weigle
before the S24O and have no idea how one even gets one. Maybe I don't
wan't to know ()
It has got me wondering. When you have a bike like that (David's), you
ride at night, you wander into a grocery store to get some goodies at zero
dark thirty, how do you secure the bike? Or do you just roll the bike into
the store and use your Ward basket as your cart?

A pleasure to meet you and all of the others. You are great people.

[RBW] Re-thievery

2013-08-27 Thread Tom Virgil
I can't condone this (re-thievery) as the thief may be dangerous as well as
stupid. There's a bit of NSFW language in the article, so you may want to
use discrestion. Girl steals bike
backThere is a
good ending (also controversial).

[RBW] Re: A Librarian and her Betty Foy

2013-09-11 Thread Tom Virgil
I'll take the numbers in the article with a grain of salt. Knowing that
you work through pain and fatigue to do something that you enjoy more than
just wallowing in those limitations makes you a hero. Man, there are days
I just don't want to ride because of some perceived affliction. I call it
"being in the wall". But my small brain is starting to "get it". Every
time I do a breakthrough on that wall and get out there, I am so glad I did
it. The expression on your face while riding your Norco tells me you make
those breakthroughs.

I call your style of riding without destination "randomeuring".

Best regards,

Tom

It's definitely easier to move from the grips to the hooks and have more
hand positions.

Proof that it happened: Bad

[RBW] Re: Bad Boy Sam Hilborne got his albas inverted for a late summer afternoon ride

2013-09-15 Thread Tom Virgil
Hi Patrick,

There are a continuum of of possibilities for hand positions in the
standard or inverted configurations. I was not using them in the standard
configuration. I organized things so that being on the grips was optimal
for me. Moving out to the hooks made me too far and too low at the same
time. Inverting the bars, and raising the stem so I still had my good grip
position put the hook position in a much more comfortable place. Between
the grips and the hooks is now more comfortable. It's probably just me. I
would not prescribe it or preach it to the rest of our folks, but it is
something to try. And it does present a different ascetic approach to bars.

Take care and blessings,

Tom

[RBW] Re: LA Bump Ride.

2013-09-16 Thread Tom Virgil
Popped this into google maps and selected "bicycle". I had to laugh.
Their selected route on W.Sunset takes you within two blocks of "Laur
el and Hardy" park. Neither you nor Evan tend toward those two characters,
but it struck my funny bone to see it on the map.

Looks like you had a good time with some great vistas.

Here is one I would like to try up there:
http://www.hikespeak.com/trails/sam-merrill-trail-echo-mountain/ Don't let
the 2.7 miles fool you. Looks challenging and has a fascinating history.
Looks like Hunqapiler territory. I picture Rivsters hooting it up on Echo
mountain.

Best regards,

Tom

There are some other fascinating images at the site like cigar smoking
while racing (not going there) and decanting wine into one's water bottle
(a potentially Riv'ish thing to do but I don't recommend biking while under
the influence). Our bicycling certainly has a rich history.

[RBW] Re: San Diego Bay Ride

2013-09-21 Thread Tom Virgil
"Hugh, when you come south so time we will do this ride."

Hello Curtis,

I would love to do this with you. Cannot tomorrow b/c of church
obligations. I think Hugh has some folk down here and visits once in a
while. So if he, Evan, Mike, David, or any of the other SoCal Rivstrs get
down on an ad hoc basis or are available, let's do it. I am in. A
Saturday would be better, though.

I personally think that taking my bike on the ferry over to Coronado and
riding around is an "E-ticket". Last time I did it was $8.50 round trip
and worth every penny. I love the 1950s "Leave It to Beaver/Donna Reed"
facades of the properties and quiet streets. A ride down the silver strand
past the Navy Seal training facility makes you think our tax dollars are
well spent. Last time I rode by a platoon of trainees were holding buckets
of sand at arm's length.

Best regards,

Tom

 Hi,

Just in case any SoCal folks are interested:

I will be riding the San Diego Bay Shore Bike Route on Sunday morning

is very flat and about 25 miles. Planning on taking the ferry to close the
 loop.

 Ride safe,

 Curtis

[RBW] Re: Sweet - Good Thing

2013-09-26 Thread Tom Virgil
Deacon Patrick speaks elsewhere on his remorse following the sale of a Sam
Hilborne.

I do not believe that such sales can be accomplished without psychological
trauma to the (former) Riv owner. They don't cover that on the
Learn/Shop/Blug website and every one of us stepped right into the trap :-)

Your bikes are great. Love the double top tube.

Re: [RBW] Re: Sweet - Good Thing

2013-09-26 Thread Tom Virgil
My apologies to the Patricks for confusing them.

Nevertheless, heed my advice on "emotional trauma." I have fantasized
about throwing my Sam for an Atlantis, but the aftermath of even the
concupiscence of that weighs on my soul. I go out and look at him or take
a spin and I think about the good memories we already have in a short time.

Let X = number of bikes you have.
Let Y = number of bikes you need.

The invariant equation is then

Y = X + 1

[RBW] Re: 54 cm Rivendell Quickbeam for sale

2013-10-02 Thread Tom Virgil
This was a sweet deal.

Looking forward to your new bike day, Hugh. I remember the day the box
with my Sam Hilborne arrived.

Out of curiosity, how do multiple front chain rings work on a single
speed? Is their "derailment" a manual operation?

Best regards,

Just beautiful. Your daughter does have a talent. I got some "brain

encouragement and the notion that your family rendezvoused with you at your

[RBW] Re: Dyno - SP Dynamo Hub

2013-10-07 Thread Tom Virgil
Hi Kelly,

I am contemplating wheel builds. Thinking 32 hole, Velocity polished A23
rims (they seem to address some problems with Velocity Synergy in high
dish). Of course I want dynamo lighting. When all is said and done, it is
an expensive thing to do. Got to looking around and found Shutter
Precision. (SP) I was also cued by
the appearance of an SV-8/Velocity Synergy rim offering in "New Stuff" at
the Rivendell site. SV-8 looks to be very price competitive. PV8 seems to
be build like a brick outhouse but loses the price point advantage. And
there is the question of getting them in the U.S at all. That being said,
now that you have had the SD-8 for a year, how is it holding up? They do
make some bold claims on their web site. There are some favorable reviews
(google search, Bicycle Quarterly).

My use case is front and rear lighting for diminishing light following
sunset. I doubt that I will randonneur hours into the evening.

Thank you,

Tom

[RBW] Re: First Meeting of The Sunrise Coffee & Tea Club

2013-10-07 Thread Tom Virgil
Hi cc,

The more I see of this, the more I like it. I am highly motivated to do
it. I know the perfect place in the Black Mountain Open Space Park near my
home that I want to be on Saturday morning, October 13. Wish there were a
few more Rivsters in the area to share, but solitude at dawn is not a bad
thing. Planning to take small Trangia stove, Zumbar Humming Bird Coffee,
French Press with titanium cup in a handlebar bag, and a great attitude.

If all that works, maybe, just maybe, a salmon scramble in the Trangia,
Some veggie to mix in, and a goodly portion of baguette to munch through
the coffee and meal.

Life can be good.

Best regards,

Tom

[RBW] Re: Dyno - SP Dynamo Hub

2013-10-08 Thread Tom Virgil
Hi Kelly,

Based on your experience and what I read around the web, I am impressed.
There are SV and PV models on ebay in the $125-135 "buy it now" range.
That is very good compared to the competition.

For Patrick Moore's benefit,

S = Small Dynamo Hub
P = Powerful Dynamo Hub
X = Extreme Dynamo Hub

D = Disc Brake
V = Cantilever, "V", or Sidepull (no accommodation on hub for disc) Brake

There are voltage and power plots for S, P, and X models on pages 7, 8, and
9 of the SP Catalog. The catalog is
here
.

Thanks for the information and report of your experience.

A bit of a Nederlands perspective, but thorough.

[RBW] Re: Mount Laguna_S240_San Diego, CA

2013-10-15 Thread Tom Virgil
Alas, I have to deal with the ball and chain Friday and into the weekend.

I have done most all of this in various separate segments and I know you
guys are in for a fantastic time.

My one additional recommendation would be that anyone coming up 78 from
Escondido to Julian carbo load at Dudley's Bakery in Santa Ysabel. It is
at the junction of 78 and 79 before you get to Julian. October specials
are German Black and Jalepeno Cheddar breads.

Best regards,

Tom

I am going to see if the Trangia has the umph to pull this off this weekend.

I think I will get the water boiling in the kettle and then pour over the
ingredients in the pan. From there, cook until pasta is al dente, garnish
with basil, serve with extra EVOO and Parmesan.

Will report in on success or lack thereof.

This circumnavigates my stomping ground, so I am in for some or all of it.
Would not want to miss you guys

Are you thinking 15th and Camino Del Mar, South to Carmel Valley Road, East
to Sorrento Valley Road, South to Sorrento Valley Blvd, East to
Penasquitos? The initial stretch on Sorrento Valley Road is bikes and
pedestrians only with the lagoon to the West side. There is a Performance
Bicycle Store in the midst of Sorrento Valley in case anyone needs bike
stuff in a pinch.

I like the ride West through bucolic RSF, but have an alternative for those
that like dirt. On the way West, Black Mountain Road and Carmel Valley
Road West on Carmel Valley Road to Rancho Santa Fe Farms Road, North on
Rancho Santa Fe Farms Road to the Gonzales Canyon entrance, West through
Gonzales Canyon to Old El Camino Real.

*One-Pan Pasta* (adapted slightly from *Martha Stewart
Living*<http://www.marthastewart.com/978784/one-pan-pasta>
)

   - 12 ounces linguine
   - 12 ounces cherry or grape tomatoes, halved or quartered if large
   - 1 onion, thinly sliced (about 2 cups)
   - 6 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
   - 1/2- 3/4 teaspoon red-pepper flakes
   - 2 sprigs basil, plus torn leaves for garnish
   - 2-3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for serving
   - kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
   - 4 1/2 cups water
   - Lots of freshly grated Parmesan cheese, for serving

Combine pasta, tomatoes, onion, garlic, red-pepper flakes, basil, oil, 2
teaspoons kosher salt, 1/4 teaspoon pepper, and water in a large
straight-sided skillet. Bring to a boil over high heat. Boil mixture,
stirring and turning pasta frequently with tongs, until pasta is al dente
and water has nearly evaporated, about 9 minutes.

I am thinking along the same lines, Anne. I have the Trangia 25-8 with 1.5

I think picking up a baguette on the way to camp would cap things off

[RBW] Re: Possible One Pot Meal for S24O

2013-11-08 Thread Tom Virgil
25-8. The pots are 1.75 and 1.5 liters. That translates to 1.59 and 1.85
quarts. The kettle is 0.9 liters or 0.95 quart. The recipe calls for 4.5
cups of water, or 1.125 quarts plus ingredients. So I think halving the
recipe would be best for my capacity.

I think the 27 series are 1 liter,

[RBW] Re: Flash San Diego Riv Ride Saturday the 9th.

2013-11-08 Thread Tom Virgil
We might want to rethink Gonzales based on how many fender people are
there. The West end has a lot of sand, sticks, and leaves so bucolic RSF
would be better for fender people. I am guessing that you are thinking of
something like Black Mountain to Del Sur on Carmel Valley Road, Carmel
Valley Road to San Dieguito on Del Sur, and San Dieguito out to El Camino
Real. Either route or any of the many other alternatives will make for a
grand ride.

Hugh,

I have the SKS Secu-Clips for break-away. Provided everyone is confident,
let's go for it.

Depending on how badly everyone wants to get back to the Pizza Port and
beer, there are many, many side trips and diversions off Carmel Valley Road
and Gonzales. A lot of fun.

[RBW] Re: Flash San Diego Riv Ride Saturday the 9th.

2013-11-08 Thread Tom Virgil
Ratz. just learned I have a work related lunch meeting on Sat.

But...

Wild horses are not going to keep me away from this ride. My campus at
work is above Penasquitos and there are several ways I can ride and
intercept from there. The wheel turns as the wheel turns, but here is a
rough approximation of the ride in three parts.

Flash Ride Part 1
Flash Ride Part 2
Flash Ride Part 3

I am out of the meeting at 1:00

It will take you approximately 1 hour 38 minutes to ride part 1 at a
constant 10 mph. Adding approximately 1 hour more for coffee at Starbucks,
contemplation of the larger scheme of things at the waterfall in
Penasquitos, and rest breaks, that would put you through the intersection
of Del Sur Blvd and Carmel Valley Road at about 1:40. That is the start of
part 2. I will intercept you there for part 2. I can get there a little
early and can wait for quite some time.

Hugh, I sent you a contact number via gmail in case we need to synchronize.

Oh, part 3 gives some suggestions for the way back to Pizza Port using some
of the new parts of the Coast to Crest Trail. More dirt.

Re: [RBW] Flash San Diego Riv Ride Saturday the 9th.

2013-11-08 Thread Tom Virgil
Got it Curtis :-) I will be riding fenders on the Sam. Since my somewhat
inconsiderate employer decided to book me for lunch tomorrow with a certain
South Korean manufacturer of cell phones and ace me out of part 1 of the
ride, I left work early today and reconed the west end of Gonzales on my
29er to get an update on trail conditions as they are now. It is always
changing base on rain and horse impact.

Reference is made to the Gonzales Canyon
Map.

I rode all the way West to the SeaBreeze Stables. It led to a somewhat
unfortunate conversation between myself and the equestrians. I was
diplomatic. The equestrians, not so much. We are not getting through
there unless we get chased by nasty people on horses who don't like
bicycles. The people don't like us, the horses are OK. I can charm a
horse. Too bad since SeaBreeze seems to have co-opted some public ROW that
runs through their stables under the high power tension lines. I
backtracked to the lagoon trail (blue on the map) and climbed to Las
Brisas. Not too hard for me in terms of energy, but ruts, sand, and
rockbed took about everything a 19 lb carbon fiber dual suspension
Specialized Epic can do. I would not feel comfortable on the fendered Sam.
I backtracked and took the power line service road (red on the map) back up
to to Dog Park in the Torrey Highlands Park. It is a well groomed fire
road, but a bit steep. Worst case, a twenty minute walk up the Service
Road with your bicycle. Better, some parts are rideable. I rode it all
the way on the Epic.

This is Hugh's deal and God bless him for proposing it. I''ll defer to him
and the group consensus as we go.

Looking forward to seeing you folks tomorrow.

[RBW] Re: Flash San Diego Riv Ride Saturday the 9th.

2013-11-09 Thread Tom Virgil
I had work commitments at noon and some "honey do's" before sunset, but I
managed to do the middle segment with Hugh, Curtis and Mike. Connecting at
mid ride went off without a hitch. Hugh called me from Black Mountain Road
and Carmel Mountain Road and 15 minutes later they were rolling into Santa
Luz where I was waiting.

We biked the bikes, talked the talk, and shared gratitude with each other
at the sheer joy of being able to do this kind of thing. Thank you, Hugh,
for coming up with the concept of a "Flash Ride" and being adaptable about
it. I'll go for it again.

My real camera was on the fritz due to low batteries (gotta watch for that
in the future) so I only have a few iPhone shots at
flickr.
Hugh and Curtis seem to be far more expert at this I am, so we will see.

In the last two images, Mike is walking, Curtis is riding. Not shown, but
Hugh rode a good part of a challenging
trail.
As for my self, I pushed, pulled and crawled up it with a bike in portage,
but it was well worth it.

This is only the second time I have been out with Rivsters, but I have to
say I really enjoyed it. These are some great guys to spend time with.

Now on to tomorrow: the one pot Trangia meal.

Thank you, Hugh, Curtis, and Mike.

Mine came today with an order of Tektro brakes (More on that later, as for

These were wonderful gentlemen to ride with.

"Gonzales Canyon" which we dropped into and the rest of the world melted

time I go in. This time was special with you guys.

I told Jahantab about our Alejandro sighting at RSF and CVR, or at least
his belongings on the cart. That motivated her to cut up some melon (it
was a hot day), pack some frozen food we had (he has a stove), and meet up
there with me on the bike (she does not do bikes, she drove). We talked
for about an hour, the three of us. He is, very much, "the fool on the
hill". I am intrigued, but wonder in my heart what really is the right
thing to do about him.

Although I caught but a part of it, I am still enjoying the memory of this
ride. This is the second time I have been out on a Hugh inspired and
organized ride. Hugh has a talent for choosing time, location, and routes,
and I really appreciate him setting this up. Curtis and Mike are tops as
fellow riders; it was my second time one with them as well.

The best exclamation of the ride (from Hugh): "There will be more!".

I am still LOL at

You guys probably think I am cynical, but I'll stop here and go no further.

Just to keep things in good spirits, it is the image of the stiletto
heeled, um, shoes. It's not the first time I have seen something like this
in the "hood". I don't know what it is that attracts them here.

That being said, thanks for diverting the ride to play in my "back yard".
I am very fond of those areas for biking and walking my dog, Louie.
Pardee Construction will continue to encroach on the "graded plain" area
with their new development and push out the Alejandro's, but the Gonzales
itself is part of the Black Mountain Preserve and is reasonably protected.
Remember the "Sword Way" sign"? That goes for about a 1/2 mile trip up
the canyon to a trail head that is about one mile from my driveway. You
guys are welcome to come and explore further from my home.

Tent space? Bedroom space? No problem. Our kids are adults now and we
have the big house. I joke to my friends that I have attempted to
childproof the house, but they keep back getting in. Most of the time they
are on their own. Want to try a teardrop trailer? We can roll it out on
the driveway and level it. It has all of the amenities (built in kitchen,
and other cool stuff) and sure beats the doghouse when Jahan is furious
with me for one of my transgressions. As the years go by, that happens a
lot less.

[RBW] Re: Waitin' on my Riv--debating on Drops versus Albatross

2013-11-17 Thread Tom Virgil
I am also Tom and I own a Sam. My Sam has inverted Albas. See
here.
It is my personal preference. They work well for me using Sam as an "All
Rounder" country bike. Sam gets ridden on the road at a good clip, on dirt
trails without issues, and even gets dragged up the Torrey Pines loop with
Hugh, Mike, and Curtis.

I also ride drops on a carbon fiber, WTB drops on a Salsa mountain bike,
and straight bars on a full suspension mountain bike. I try to set up each
bike for its purpose and in a manner that benefits me most in using it.
All of these configurations were derived over some time with change-outs
to see what would work

I would choose the Albas again, in either standard or inverted
configuration for Sam. I would probably choose them for an AHH or
Atlantis; I would have to test them to be sure. Oddly enough, I never
would have dreamed that I could be comfortable over long distance on
shellac cloth bound bars, but I am. My neutral position is usually with
hands on the bars, just ahead of the brake levers. I don't seem to miss
cork, gels, and gushy stuff, but I do wear padded gloves. If I need a more
"aero" position, I move forward into the hooks. More upright is the cork
grips behind the brakes.

Hope that helps.

2014-02-12 Thread Tom Virgil
Wonderfully composed and an enjoyable read. Got me thinking about my own
fortune in having a riding resource outside my back door (Although Gozales,
McGonnigle, and Black Mountain have nowhere near the extent of Big Tijunga).

That in turn led to reading about Sunland-Tijunga history, the Tongva
people, and a particular one named Juana Maria. Never underestimate the
power of your words.

[RBW] Re: Pics from inside Waterford

2014-02-18 Thread Tom Virgil
I must have got in just under the wire. My Boulder All
Road was
crafted at Waterford. I do not know if the pin stripe was was done at
Waterford or with one of Mike Kone's Boulder resources. I can say I like
it (the frame and the paint) very much. Appreciate Tony's sharing his
experience there.

Best Regards,

Tom

2014-02-18 Thread Tom Virgil

Dear Hugh,

In his time, Colin Fletcher made an impression on me with his "1000 Mile
Summer" that has stayed with me from my teens to my present age. The
Panamints are featured as are many things. The book inspired a wilderness
ethic that is a part of my life (along with "Complete Walker" and his other
works). Off topic for Rivsters, but I am sentimental about it.

Take care, good friend,

Tom

the same time as purposeful as a honey badger.

I look forward to the effect of the cedar fenders.

[RBW] Remember the Turtles?

2014-03-31 Thread Tom Virgil
Sighted these guys on a SamRide (TM) along the Highway 56 Bikeway.

So happy
together.

They are apparently Red-Eared Sliders which are not native and most likely
escapees or rejects from someone's home terrarium turtle habitat. Or,
considering the area, a generation or two beyond.

There is something about a SamRide that brings out the observable. Perhaps
it is my attitude whilst riding such a bike.

Hugh, Curtis, and Mike can attest to our passage through a photo/film shoot
of dubious character after clawing our way up a power line service trail to
Torrey Pines Public Park. These things only seem to happen on a SamRide.

[RBW] Re: Remember the Turtles?

2014-03-31 Thread Tom Virgil
The Boulder All Road s running Noodles. I like them.

After a lot of thought, reflection, and assessing what I feel (pains,
discomfort, where I ride it), Sam is transitioning to a Noodle bar bike and
lightening/being graceful. He is also getting an Eyc and rear tail lamp as
I am riding him to work and working long hours.

I ride the All Road purposefully. All Road runs fast with just the stuff I
need. Sam glides in a more meandering fashion. My rides home from work
take me where they will. Saw a baby deer tonight on the 56 and just took
the time to look at him/her for a while.

[RBW] Re: New Edeluxe Light Source - LENR

2014-04-01 Thread Tom Virgil
Rivendell Sauron. LMAO.

My evil mind immediately flashed to a salamander hued contraption with 16
inch wheels and a low slung frame.. It would be the Rivendell Gollum.

Me precious,

Tom

[RBW] Some ideas on bike theft and retrieval (Here's how to get your stolen bike back in S.F.)

2014-05-03 Thread Tom Virgil
>From
>sfgate.
>
The article has some reasonable ideas. The comments are chaotic so please
don't be discouraged by them.

It made me think. Do I even know or have I recorded the bicycle frame
serial number of my Sam? Nope. I do not even know if it has one. I went
back to my original invoice at the rivbike My Account to see if one was
recorded there. It was not. Perhaps that would be a good idea if Riv bikes
have such a concept.

Failing the above, I will call Jared on Monday to see if Riv bikes have
serial numbers and where to find them. More immediately, before tomorrow's
ride I will check the underside of the bottom bracket (the obvious place)
and see of one is stamped there.

As is the case with most of you, my Sam arrived partially assembled. I
have stuffed business cards and a "reward" card down the seat tube before
installing the seat post. I would remove them if I sold Sam (not bloody
likely unless my heirs prey my cold dead hands off of his new eggplant
taped noodle bars.)

We hear from time to time of a stolen bike on this list and there is a very
good response from members as to remedies. That is greatly appreciated.

The latest here in San Diego is theft from garages. I live in a gate
guarded community with security patrols and still the thieves tailgate
gardeners and maids. Charming as they might be, windows on your roll up
garage doors just let the thieves see what can be had. Hanging your bikes
from the ceiling and frosting those windows could help. They are also
using garage door band frequency scanners to see what pops open when they
roll through the neighborhood. There are newer garage door controllers
that are resistant to that.

The worst is having some thief jump in front of you on the bikeway and
announce he is taking your bike from you. This has been happening on the
Santa Ana River Trail and the Highway 56 route. Nothing is worth your
life, so give it over if you must. The same attitude you should have
toward a car jack. My solution to this situation (has happened twice) is
not suitable for polite discussion on this forum. I have not lost any
bikes. On a more positive note, I would advice much situational awareness
and using continuous emotional awareness as to what you are riding into.

~Tom
