Liesl,

Thanks for the update - I once took a spin on an old Motobecane Mixte with
like-paired diagatubes. Thought it was really cool. Any ideas as to when
this bike will become a reality? Can't wait for some pics!

Re: [RBW] Giro aspect helmet

2013-08-28 Thread Aaron Young
That Giro looks pretty nice. I recently bought a new helmet and went with
a Giro because my old Giro was so comfortable. I chose the Giro Reverb
from REI: http://www.rei.com/product/844477/giro-reverb-bike-helmet.
Overall, Its a nice, retro, smooth cue ball shape, but it could use some
more vents, and the fit is not as good as the older Giro because there is
no adjustment in the back to dial in the fit. Not too expensive though, so
its at least another option in the round helmet category.

Hi there,

I'm interested, but do you have any photos of the bike? How old is the
bike and how much use has it seen? Does it have the mid fork braze ons for
connecting a front rack without using p-clamps on the fork?

Thanks,

Hope it helps. I've only ridden in these once, but they were just fine.
Didn't notice them at all, which is a good thing.

Re: [RBW] MUSA Shorts - Assistance with Sizing

2013-09-11 Thread Aaron Young
I think you would have to unstitch the elastic to remove the plastic
buckle. Honestly, I don't like the belt much because the buckle seems a
bit bulky, but again when I'm actually wearing them I don't notice. I
prefer zippers and buttons on shorts and pants because it makes dressing
and bathroom breaks easier.

As for sizing. I think my waist measures 33-34". I have knickers in size
L and M, pants in M, and shorts in M. The Mediums fit my waist a bit
better. The Large knickers are fine in the waist (a little long in the
legs - almost capri length on my shortish legs), but when I load my pockets
down the waist can droop a bit as it stretches. In the future I plan to
only buy Mediums.

[RBW] Ride Report: Recon. Ride for Wasco Cty Ctry Ramble 2.0!

2013-09-20 Thread Aaron Young
Hey gang,

Let's just get this out of the way. Here're the pictures:

http://flic.kr/s/aHsjJqAYZK

In preparation for the upcoming Wasco County Country Ramble (v2.0, mind
you), I went exploring my new environs around The Dalles, OR. I ended up
rambling further than I initially intended when I set out this morning (and
really should have taken more water and sunscreen), but in the end I made
it home safely.

The ride took me out south of town via Dry Hollow and 3-mile Roads, but
even though I was going South it was consistently uphill (sorry,
Treebeard). After 4-5 miles the pavement ends and a wide, gravel road
continues for another 6 or so miles. Dutch Flat road connects to Skyline
Road which leads all the way back into town. Going north on Skyline is
pretty much downhill the entire way and was a nice respite from the long
slog out. Here's the route if you are interested: http://goo.gl/maps/R957B

I rode a Koga-Miyata ValleyRunner that is set up with Albatross bars and
Barcons. The Keven's bag was perfect for this ride. The weather was
perfect; not too hot, barely any wind.

I'm not sure if I would recommend this as the actual Wasco County Country
Ramble route. It was a good ride, but basically uphill the entire way out
and downhill back in. I think a more variable route might be a better
option. Also, this ride goes out to the middle of nowhere and back. There
are no services out there or stores to grab food or drink. Smitty and I
will work out a route before the actual Ramble, but if you have any
suggestions please let me know and I can scout them out ahead of time.
Riding out here (especially road riding) really is a hidden treasure.
Hopefully the pictures show a bit of that.

[RBW] Re: Ride Report: Recon. Ride for Wasco Cty Ctry Ramble 2.0!

2013-09-20 Thread Aaron Young
Nothing at all wrong with up and down. But this route was pretty much
sustained climbing the first half and all downhill the second. I think it
would be nice to break up the climbing a bit although I don't know if
that's possible out here. This area is called the Columbia River Gorge,
and it's kind of a bi-level geography; the lower elevation down near the
river, and the higher elevation up on the top of the surrounding
hills/mountains. There's not a lot of distance to be found in the way
of mid elevation. A route that incorporates some mid elevation would be
ideal, but even if we don't find it, we will have a great ride Oct.12
anyhow!

[RBW] Ride report: Wasco County Country Ramble / coffee break

2013-10-12 Thread Aaron Young
Hey gang,

A group of 9 met at my place in The Dalles, Wasco County, Oregon for a
country ramble. The weather was a bit drizzly to begin with, but luckily
only threatened to rain and we had a dry, though overcast ride. Temps were
nice in the mid fifties. The pack of nine endured a 50-mile loop to the
south and east of The Dalles with the majority of roads being gravel and
seemingly uphill; a few climbs had grades in the double digits. The terrain
in this part of OR is very hilly so each steep climb was paired with an
equally steep descent.

Highlights included:

- a pre-lunch lunch stop across from an abandoned school house which is
said to have been built in 1904 and next to an old cemetery with
gravestones with dates from the first half of the 1800's

- a lunch stop in the rural town of Dufur where Zach treated us with fancy
and tasty hot coffee

- miles and miles of nearly car-less gravel roads surrounded by picturesque
farms and wheat fields

- a post ride meal at the local taco truck in downtown The Dalles

Lots of pics are sure to follow.

Re: [RBW] bridgestone posters for sale at Riv!

2013-10-24 Thread Aaron Young
Yes, I was just being light hearted. I don't consider Riv prices to be
literally taxing, and Riv sure never forced me to buy anything wether I
wanted to or not. When I went to type Rivbike.com Rivbike.gov came out of
my fingers. Instead of correcting it, I just went with it.

Even better than Rivbike.gov though would be Rivbike.guv'na. Well, maybe...

Re: [RBW] Half Mitts

2013-11-11 Thread Aaron Young
I used a thumbless pair through winter, and with a light liner type glove
(with a thumb) they were just fine for my short commute.

My wife knitted me some custom wool gloves based on a design I suggested
that complement the half mitts nicely. They are fingerless and thumbless,
but the thumb has a convertible cap that can fold down to cover the thumb
from the cold when needed. They are a little goofy, but worked really well
for me. The nice thing is everything is covered, but I could easily
uncover the tips of all finger and even thumb if I needed.

I recently bought a thumbed paid of half mitts, but haven't had the need to
use them yet. They seem a bit bulkier than the thumbless versions because
of the thumbs of course, but also they are fuzzier on the inside than the
older version - the material is different. They will probably be better
for colder temps with the extra fuzz in there.

Re: [RBW] OT: What would YOU do?

2013-11-12 Thread Aaron Young
Shawn,

Nice saddle. I would definitely ask more than $50 for it. :^)

I think you can flag it. And it would be easy enough to have a few others
do the same. That would get it removed from CL at least. I know for
certain that this kind of thing (stealing someone else's photos) is not
allowed on ebay - goes against their terms of service. I would imaging CL
has a similar policy... but I'm too lazy to check that right now.

I wonder if the seller actually does have a Brooks and they just didn't
have a picture so they snagged your pic. But if they can snag it from
Flickr, then it seems they should be able to contact you to ask permission
though, right?

Sending the seller a bill might be an interesting way to contact the
seller.

I don't think you should ignore it. Its not a huge deal in context of the
world's problems, but its still not cool of a guy/gal to do, and probably
against CL terms of service (I'm still too lazy to check).

That's my opinion on the matter. Good luck!

Re: [RBW] Half Mitts

2013-11-16 Thread Aaron Young
Update:

Went on a short ride in low 40's-degrees weathers, plus some winds, so
temps at the lowest in upper 30's perhaps. I used the new half-mitts with
the thumb. I was surprised at how bulky the thumb felt, and it was a bit
awkward to get the thumb out. The half mitts are nice because you can
quickly remove your fingers, but the full thumb has to be pulled off
separately just like a regular glove. Its a small thing, and in really
cold weather probably would be worth it, but on an only mildly cold ride, I
think I'll stick with the old style, thumbless half-mitts.

I think I would prefer a half-thumb, instead of a full thumb cover, though.
Then it would cover the tip of the thumb and the back (dorsal side), but
leave the palmar open - just like the rest of the mitt.

[RBW] Sam H. + Hetres + Fenders = Tire Rub?

2014-02-18 Thread Aaron Young
Hey gang,

I have Hetres on my first-gen (gold 'n' green) Sam H. with VO Zeppelin
fenders. Clearances are fairly tight, but there is no tire rub as long as
the wheels are true and the fenders are adjusted properly.

However, under heavy pedaling it seems (sounds/feels like) some tire rub
may occur as the bike flexes. I can't see any wear marks on the tire, but
any degree of tire rub is concerning to me. I'm considering swapping tires
to something a bit smaller, but before I do I want to ask the bunch:

If you have a Sam H and are running 650bx42mm tires and have fenders, then
what is your experience? What tires and fenders are you using? Any
rubbing?

Thanks,

Aaron "In general I like a rub, but just not tire rub" Young

[RBW] Sam H. + Hetres + Fenders = Tire Rub?

2014-02-19 Thread Aaron Young
Shoji: just a single kickstand. Maybe you are onto something with the low
tire pressure though. I generally run pretty low pressures. I'll try to
pump them up a bit and see what changes.

Peter: my wheels are fairly true. No significant wobbles just from an
eyeball test. Also, the Hetres seem to be mounted uniformly without any
lumps or bumps on the VO Wheelset. I think they are the diagonal rims and
grand cru touring hub combo.

Thanks,

Aaron

[RBW] Re: Sam H. + Hetres + Fenders = Tire Rub?

2014-02-22 Thread Aaron Young
I pumped the Hetres up to 50psi and went on a ride today. Overall, there
was less of a feeling/sound of a rub. However, occasionally under heavy
load the feeling persisted. Wondering if maybe its a bottom bracket issue
(or maybe even a seat issue?).

For reference I just measured my Hetres and at 50 psi they measure almost
exactly 42mm on the VO rims.

I don't think I'm at problem solved just yet, so I'll keep looking.

Thanks for the help so far.

Thanks for the link, Zack. I'm still trying to get the grind:steep ratio

I don't believe Riv is selling the stainless steel reusable filter so this
should be kosher to post. Amazon has a couple versions, and I bought the el
cheapo version. It seems to be a near replica of the $15+ one I've seen
advertised elsewhere.

Here's an el_cheapo link.

[RBW] Re: Grant on tires

2014-03-14 Thread Aaron Young
I too prefer Joy over Work. However, I think Grant is probably making his
decision based on more than just the feel of the tire. He would likely be
willing to concede that a lighter tire with a supple(r) casing and thin
tread might provide a superior ride, but the benefits of a thicker tread
and stiffer sidewall outweigh those performance gains.

[RBW] How do you post pictures to the list?

2014-03-24 Thread Aaron Young
There are many different ways to do that. One commonly used way on this
list is to use a service like Flicrk or Google's Picasa (right?) and then
copy/paste a link from one of those services. If you aren't familiar with
those or other equivalent services, you might have to do some "homework"
and reading on those sites to get through the beginning of the learning
curve.

Personally, I started using Flickr because I saw many others here using it.
I generally take photos with my iPhone and upload to Flickr via the iOS
Flickr app. Then at home on my computer I organize, name, add detail, etc.
Then I copy/paste a link to the album or set I want to share and send it
out via email. My workflow is obviously not too sophisticated or novel,
but it is easy enough for me.

Others may have slicker/quicker methods which if not too OT I would love to
hear about.

[RBW] Re: 26" Tire Suggestions?

2014-04-11 Thread Aaron Young
Michael,

Congratulations on finding a Valley Runner! I have one too set up with
albatross bars and Big Bens. I love riding it.

Here's a photo with Big Bens mounted - sorry its not a close up.

https://flic.kr/p/j747TN

My vote is for the Big Bens. They are 2.15" but a really great tire; good
on the road and great on gravel/fire trails and not insane single track
(haven't done much of that though, to be honest). I haven't tried putting
fenders on there yet, but it looks like there is plenty of room still. I
haven't tried other tires so can't comment on the offerings from Compass or
Schwalbe.

Enjoy your Valley Runner! Hope to see some pics when you get done building
it up. :)

[RBW] Re: Tires.... what to buy

2011-01-15 Thread Aaron Young
I'm using 700x28 TG Paselas and have no complaints.

Why the preference for wire bead though? According to the Panaracer site
the folding kevlar Paselas (280g )weigh less than the wire bead non-TG
versions (320g for 28mm sizes). The non-folding TG is listed as 340g.

If its not for weight then is the issue suppleness? Does the TG interfere
with suppleness? I thought the suppleness of the sidewall was what really
led to a great feeling tire.

[RBW] Re: Hunqa and SO update on Riv site!

2010-08-28 Thread Aaron Young
Personally I like the look of a straight second top tube more than the
diagonal. Also, I agree with James V. that the original Breezer style
diagonal would be better (but a bit heavier if that even matters).

With the diaga-tube will Riv change the Hunqa-graphics so the second
crossbar on the "H" is diagonal, too????

[RBW] What Pedal is This?

2010-09-18 Thread Aaron Young
I think its this pedal:

http://www.amazon.com/Sunlite-Cruz-Sport-Pedals-Silver/dp/B00363LPEI/ref=pd_sbs_sg_39

It looks just like the ones I bought for my winter commuter recently
(because they were the cheapest set they had at Bert's Bike/Fitness). Lucky
for you, if you buy them they won't set you back much.

I think they are okay, but they don't feel nearly as nice as the MKS touring
pedal. These pedals have less grip and the platform doesn't feel as flat.
I would have returned them to Bert's if I hadn't installed them first. The
upcharge for the MKS is more than worth it in my opinion.

[RBW] NonRiv Ride Maine style

2010-10-03 Thread Aaron Young
You have a great idea there - maybe we could all do a RBW-list ride, on the
same day, but wherever you are. Or list members in close proximity to each
other could meet up, but it would be Ride Day or something. Then think of
all the cool ride reports there could be! Just a thought...

Congrats on your great ride. It sure beats the
sitting-at-home-doing-nothing that I did yesterday. I would include a
report of it, but it pretty much describes itself.

Re: [RBW] Cowboy shirts

2010-07-23 Thread Aaron Young
I was really happy to see them on the site as well. I've been using a
similar cowboy shirt for outdoor physical activities (riding bikes,
skateboarding, hiking, rock climbing) for at least 10 years now. It's a
nice light white-blue color and must be made of a cotton-poly blend, but its
so light and airy its perfect for riding. I don't know how I feel about the
100% cotton though. Or the $65 (yikes!).

use a large saddle bag like the Sackville Large or Medium. Does anyone have
experience using the Mark's rack with either of these bags? Is the platform
of the Mark's rack long enough (mine measures ~7.5") to support a loaded
Large Sackville Saddlesack (13" deep according to Rivbike.com)? The
Sackville Large description actually mentions compatibility with the Mark's
rack and I know the Sackville bags have a stiffener on the bottom, but 5.5"
overhang seems like too much, particularly when fully loaded. Any
experiences?

Re: [RBW] Wider Mustache?

2012-07-04 Thread Aaron Young
What do you mean by "Mustache style"? You can certainly turn the albatross
bars upside down so there is less (actually negative) rise, but you will
still have to use the mountain bike type brake levers on it, whereas the
Moustache bar uses road levers.

If you used a stem with longer reach maybe that would straighten your arms
out a bit just like wider bar would. Maybe that could give you the feel of
a wider bar...? I've never tried that - just brainstorming here.

[RBW] Re: Tire Casing Quiz

2014-01-13 Thread Aaron Young
Making a tire with less rubber (i.e., a thinner casing) means there is less
room for error and tolerances need to be tighter. This is probably part of
what necessitates the extra cost. Also, I could imagine that making tires
to higher standards means there are fewer tires that meet those standards
which then get thrown out. Another way cost is added to the process.

http://www.amazon.com/Shimano-BR-CX70-Cyclocross-Cantilever-Brake/dp/B0063R26VK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1407852028&sr=8-2&keywords=Shimano+cx70+brake

Maybe it's a typo, or maybe I am confused about what long pull means or I'm
looking at the wrong brake or...

Good to hear the ones Riv sells work with normal levers though.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivish single speed

2014-08-23 Thread Aaron Young
Another option is to put a brass bell right in the middle of the stem.
That visually breaks it up a bit. My wife's bike has a similar issue and
the bell helped in my opinion.

My very first steel bike (in fact the first bike I ever bought myself) was
an all black Centurion Accordo. It was a great bike and sometimes I wish I
still had it. I sold it after finding some vintage Trek frames which I
still have and ride. Your Accordo is much prettier than the one I had
though.

Great bike; happy riding!

Another option for the wood handle is to coat it in pine tar, like Riv does
for the hatchet and axe handles. It gives the handle more grip than the
more slippery coating of shellac.

Deacon,

Glad to hear you are doing well. You are right; appendicitis can just
happen regardless of dietary habits. Once a surgeon suspects appendicitis
then the standard of care is surgical removal. In other parts of the world
where health care isn't as accessible as it is in the US, sometimes they
might treat appendicitis with antibiotics and hope it doesn't rupture, and
when it does that they can treat it and hope the patient doesn't become
septic or die.

Did they do an open procedure or use the scopes and cameras? Hopefully,
you got the laparoscopic procedure as that generally hastens healing and is
supposedly less painful.

In any case, wishing you well with recovery.

Re: [RBW] A different kind of S24O

2014-09-21 Thread Aaron Young
We use CO2 for inflating the abdomen (technical term is insufflation).
Nitrogen (essentially air) is a bad idea because whichever gas used gets
absorbed through the tissues into the bloodstream. Nitrogen could
theoretically lead to the bends. CO2 is easily absorbed and then delivered
via the blood to the lungs for removal from the body in the usual way.

The shoulder pain after laparoscopic surgery is usually referred pain from
an irritated diaphragm. The insufflation and mechanical ventilation can
irritate it.

Finally we are talking about something I know about. :)

Patrick,

Yes, I do this for a living. Some people joke that we anesthesiologists
pass gas for a living, but I prefer to say I keep people safe and
comfortable while they nap instead. Had a nicer ring to it.

It's interesting to hear about your insurance program. I'm only recently
out of residency training so now I have to worry about which insurance
folks have and all the billing issues. Billing and insurance are by far the
things I like least about practicing medicine, and many physicians will
tell you the exact same thing.

Finally, thank you for saying thanks. Most often an anesthesiologist's
job is a thankless one because we transfer our patients to recovery and
then must leave before the patient is awake enough to remember to say
thanks. Happily most anesthesiologists have the type of personality that
doesn't need the spotlight all the time. I am perfectly happy to sit at
the head of the OR table quietly and attentively caring for my patients
without fanfare and whatnot. So... Thank you!

Do you have any bike (or other) projects you have been meaning to get
around to? Maybe now's your chance, right? :)

Re: [RBW] About to start experimenting with centerpulls

2014-09-25 Thread Aaron Young
Hi Bill,

Just doing some research reading about brakes and came across your update.

You mention that the DC 610's work, even work well. Then you say the
1970's restoration with Dia Compes are really powerful. What do you think
is the difference here? I would guess that both Dia Compe brake sets are
pretty similar and should have a similar feel, but the description sounds
like they are quite different. Is it the levers that are different? Just
the way they are set up? I'm just curious what your thoughts are on this.

[RBW] Wide mouth Canti's

2014-09-25 Thread Aaron Young
Hey Bunch,

I'm looking for some new Canti's and specifically want a set that will open
nice and wide to avoid having to deflate large tires when putting the wheel
in and out. Riv sells the Shimano CX-70 that do this well apparently. Are
there other suggestions though as those are $120 per pair.

Also, what's the deal with the CX-70s? Is it just the pads that are
installed are short enough to miss most fork blades? If so, what problems
might crop up if shorter pads are installed on other types of cantis?

Thanks,

So a particular brake may work well on a certain bike, but put the same
brake on another frame and you may get different results. Got it.

Re: [RBW] Should it stay or should it go?

2014-10-02 Thread Aaron Young
Hi Mike,

I don't know if I can help in making your decision, but I DO have a couple
thoughts.

After writing this I figured a summary might be helpful. :) Here's the
short version: 1. Ride the snot out of that Dave Scott regardless if the
tube is bent or not (in rhyme even!). 2. Skip the cross check and
save, save, save for a Sam H (no rhyme).

First, a dented top tube isn't necessarily an end of life issue for a good
steel bike. I still ride (and consider an all-time favorite type bike) a
1985 Trek 620 that was in an accident before I bought it. Both the down and
top tubes are bent downward from the impact of the front wheel hitting
something (a dog was the story I was told). I didn't notice the dents
before buying it and was dismayed to say the least when I finally noticed
the bent tubes while cleaning it up at home. Since the bike was bent I
felt fine riding it year round including through four upstate NY winters
with salty roads. If it weren't bent I would likely have babied it and not
ridden it as much. So, just ride that Dave Scott if you like the way it
fits and rolls. Don't worry about the dent. Put a top tube protector over
it so you forget about it. But inspect it only occasionally to make sure
it's not getting worse or leading to tube fatigue and failure.

As for the Cross Check vs Sam H dilemma, is it possible to hold off on that
new bike purchase while you save enough to get a Sam? The Cross check is a
great bike, but it's a different bike than a Sam in a lot of ways. I
bought my Sam used off this list for a very reasonable price. Maybe wait
for one to pop up on the list? In any case, Be patient and save for what
you really want. You will be happier in the long term.

Just my opinions at no charge. Of course they are worth just about what you
paid for them. :)

Good luck,
Aaron Young

Hmm, waiting for Clem Smith, Jr to show up is a great idea. What's the
time frame on that though? Anyone know?

That's interesting to hear about the Panasonic-Centurion connection. I
guess the Panasonic factories must have made bikes for quite a few brands.
I have a friend that has a mid 80's Scwhinn Traveler that was apparently
made by Panasonic, too. She calls it a "Schwinasonic". Or maybe it's
Schwinnasonic? In any case, it too is a great bike just like that Dave
Scott.

Btw, the very first bike I purchased when I began to be more serious about
riding was a Centurion Accordo. Black paint and cool/dorky 80's graphics.
Centurions are great!

Re: [RBW] Should it stay or should it go?

2014-10-03 Thread Aaron Young
Hi Dan,

I don't think anyone is bagging on the Surly. In fact I would be happy to
ride one myself. My point is just that the Cross Check is a different bike
than the Sam H. Not better or worse, just different. The CC is a
cyclocross bike with extra braze ons, while the Sam H is probably closer to
a sport touring bike of the mid 1980's. In my understanding at least. If
one wants what is offered by the Sam H, a CC might not live up to one's
hopes.

Depending on how they are set up a Quickbeam and Cross Check might be very
different bikes as well, so perhaps not the most useful comparison. It's
good to hear support for the Surly, though.

Really when it comes down to it the most important thing is not which name
is on the frame, but that we are out riding. Just Ride, right?

Re: [RBW] Dyno light recommendation

2014-10-08 Thread Aaron Young
Let me clarify. Was thinking of the difference in weight between a dynamo
hub + light + wiring vs. a regular hub + battery powered light + battery
weight. My thinking was any or most weight savings with a regular,
non-dyno hub would be offset by a battery pack.

Absolutely. It doesn't matter which side of the handlebar a shifter is on
as long as you route the cables appropriately. I'm sure there are some
exceptions, but I haven't come across them in my bar-end, friction-shifting

2014-11-08 Thread Aaron Young
I'm not a nutritionist, but I do practice medicine if that counts for
anything.

In medicine when there is a disease that has many different possible
treatments it indicates we really don't have a good treatment yet, or we
don't understand the disease very well yet. I think this is why there are
so many conflicting thoughts on the "best" diet, and suggests that
nutrition is really complicated and we don't have a full understanding of
it yet. At least not in a way that we can recommend one diet for all people
on one hand, or specific, individualized diets on the other hand. If we
have figured out nutrition, then we would know it and there would be much
less controversy.

I don't know, but my guess is the answer lies in our individual genetics,
which can vary widely, so a one-size-fits-all approach will probably never
work. Perhaps in the future when we really figure out nutrition we will be
able to suggest a diet based on an individual's genome. Certainly there is
nothing wrong with trying different dietary approaches in the meantime.

Till then at least there is something we can all agree on: "Just Ride",
right? :)

Re: [RBW] For Sale-58cm Atlantis Frame/Fork/Headset

2014-11-13 Thread Aaron Young
RE: the 56 vs 58 Atlantis. I recently bought a used Atlantis. My PBH put
me right between both sizes and since there is a significant difference in
wheel size I waited till I had ridden both sizes before choosing. As far
as standover height, there really wasn't much difference (of course tires
could affect this a bit), but as expected there was just a little less on
the 58 with 700c wheels. Tire size there was "fattish", but not 50's or
anything. The 56 on the other hand had 2.15" 26ers and still had a bit
more standover.

Honestly, I think I would be happy on either frame size, but went for a 56
because in my imaginations I saw myself using the Atlantis more off road
than on and even doing some light single track. So went for 26er and more
standover. I'm happy with my decision, but with how much riding I have
been doing lately (more like haven't been doing) the frame size is really
moot! :)

Congrats to Bill it seems are in order.

[RBW] Pleasant Dream

Last night I had this really nice dream. I dreamt I was using my

However, in my dream it was such a pleasant thing to do. The hatchet was

pleasant.

Wishing you all pleasant dreams,

Re: [RBW] Sam Hillborne, Oregon Outback, Off-roading and the ?: 2 bikes or 2 sets of wheels?

2014-11-16 Thread Aaron Young
I've been riding an OG green Sam H. with Hetres on all sorts of stuff
including single track (unloaded) with sharp rocks and have had no problems
off road. With Jan's recent showing on the OO I would be fine taking it as
is on the OO. However, I would consider packing light as that's what Jan
did. Also, I wouldn't be opposed to putting a stouter tire on.

If your fit is comfortable on your Sam H. and you really like riding it, I
would recommend that over getting a different bike that you may or may not
like as much. Especially for a long ride where comfort is key.

As far as studded tires, I rode year round for 4 years in Rochester, NY
which has much more snow the E. Washington and in the winter I never used
studded tires. My wheels were 27" so I put some small-studded cyclocross
tires on for winter time (I searched for, but did not find studded tires in
that size) and unless there was a literal sheet of ice it was just fine.
Even with studs you aren't guaranteed not crashing on ice. The key is ride
slow and be careful. I do admit I fell twice during those 4 years, but
never was injured. Lucky, I guess.

Those Cazadero's look awesome though. I may have to check them out.
Thanks, Chris. Might be good for snow, too. Sorry, I don't have other
tire recommendations. Good luck! Hope to see you on the Outback next year
(I hope to go).

[RBW] WTB: BOSCO BULLMOOOOSE!

2014-11-16 Thread Aaron Young
Bump!

There's got to be someone out there that is just itching to get rid of
their Bullmoose Bosco's... ...right? Hoping to buy before Thanksgiving.
If Bullmoose doesn't materialize I would also be interested in a wide
58cm steel Bosco Bar.

The plan is to make my dad's old mtn bike Riv'd and Bosco'd over
Thanksgiving.
Right now he has an older, pretty average rigid Schwinn mtn bike. He has
tried to get a more upright position by rotating the bar ends vertically
and he put tennis balls on their ends. It's weird in a good way, but less
useful than a Bosco.

Thanks,
Aaron Young

Re: [RBW] Shoe Recommendations for VP Thin Gripsters (or Grip Kings)

2014-11-17 Thread Aaron Young
Actually I think the Portland Kids have only one opinion and it's chukka.
Good to hear other opinions and options exist though. :)

[RBW] WTB: Chromo Bosco - 58cm

2014-11-17 Thread Aaron Young
I'm still looking for the big daddy Bull Moose Bosco, but if someone has a
chromo-bosco that is 58cm wide I'd be interested in that as well.

Thanks,
