Update:

Went on a short ride in low 40's-degrees weathers, plus some winds, so
temps at the lowest in upper 30's perhaps.  I used the new half-mitts with
the thumb.  I was surprised at how bulky the thumb felt, and it was a bit
awkward to get the thumb out.  The half mitts are nice because you can
quickly remove your fingers, but the full thumb has to be pulled off
separately just like a regular glove.  Its a small thing, and in really
cold weather probably would be worth it, but on an only mildly cold ride, I
think I'll stick with the old style, thumbless half-mitts.

I think I would prefer a half-thumb, instead of a full thumb cover, though.
 Then it would cover the tip of the thumb and the back (dorsal side), but
leave the palmar open - just like the rest of the mitt.
