I'm not a nutritionist, but I do practice medicine if that counts for anything.
In medicine when there is a disease that has many different possible treatments it indicates we really don't have a good treatment yet, or we don't understand the disease very well yet. I think this is why there are so many conflicting thoughts on the "best" diet, and suggests that nutrition is really complicated and we don't have a full understanding of it yet. At least not in a way that we can recommend one diet for all people on one hand, or specific, individualized diets on the other hand. If we have figured out nutrition, then we would know it and there would be much less controversy. I don't know, but my guess is the answer lies in our individual genetics, which can vary widely, so a one-size-fits-all approach will probably never work. Perhaps in the future when we really figure out nutrition we will be able to suggest a diet based on an individual's genome. Certainly there is nothing wrong with trying different dietary approaches in the meantime.
