I used a thumbless pair through winter, and with a light liner type glove (with a thumb) they were just fine for my short commute.
My wife knitted me some custom wool gloves based on a design I suggested that complement the half mitts nicely. They are fingerless and thumbless, but the thumb has a convertible cap that can fold down to cover the thumb from the cold when needed. They are a little goofy, but worked really well for me. The nice thing is everything is covered, but I could easily uncover the tips of all finger and even thumb if I needed. I recently bought a thumbed paid of half mitts, but haven't had the need to use them yet. They seem a bit bulkier than the thumbless versions because of the thumbs of course, but also they are fuzzier on the inside than the older version - the material is different. They will probably be better for colder temps with the extra fuzz in there.
