Re: [RBW] Re: N = ? or How do you decide how many bikes to own?

2017-04-06 Thread Jeff Lesperance
I've done a fair amount of catch and release over the past dozen years or
so (whereas 12+ years ago I was a one bike guy) and have been trying to get
the bike stable down to the fewest bikes possible while also being able to
satisfy all of my biking interests. I'm currently at:

1. Touring/Allroad/Weekender/Rando ride: Sam Hillborne, soon to be replaced
with an All City Space Horse Disc
2. Off-road Touring/Rough stuff: Surly Troll
3. Commuter: Breezer Belway (belt drive, IGH)
4. Cruiser: Rosco Bubbe v2
5. Family: Bike Friday Family Tandem

I could do without the Rosco, that's just an indulgence. The commuter isn't
necessary but belt drive/IGH makes for a nice minimal maintenance bike. I
mostly use the Troll for reasonably worn or groomed trail riding, where
just about any other bike in the stable could work, but I like to be able
to veer off of the well traveled path on occasion. The family tandem
shouldn't count, that's straight family fun with my daughters. I guess I
could get down to 3 bikes, including the tandem.

My stable has been as many as 8 or 9 bikes and that just felt unwieldy - at
that many bikes there's too many bikes that just don't get attention that
someone else may give them. I'm not interested in museum pieces that can
only come out for a slow ride around the driveway on Sundays, so that
attitude informs my catch rate as well.

Re: [RBW] Re: N = ? or How do you decide how many bikes to own?

2017-04-06 Thread John G.
Like Jeff, I've done a decent amount of catch and release over the past few
years. Just a few more tweaks and I should have my stable settled. For
real. No, I'm serious!

Here's what it looks like now:
1. Everything Bike: 61 cm Atlantis: my most recent addition, and by far my
favorite. If I'm riding alone, there's a really good chance that I'll take
the Atlantis. I'm setting any records on it, but it's just a wonderful way
to go out and enjoy an afternoon.
2. Feeling Zippy Bike: 63 cm Mercian Superlight: Before I purchased the
Atlantis, this was my most used bike. This is the bike that convinced me
that as a 6'1 guy, I should not be riding size 58 road bikes. It's a faster
than the Atlantis, and super comfy--the headtube is like 10 feet tall.
3. Problem Child/Organ Donor Bike: Soma Smoothie 58cm: the speed is
seductive, but it just doesn't fit and isn't good for much aside from
keeping up with friends on rides. I have some nice parts on it, and would
love to use them to build up a modern Zippy bike that actually fits.

Stuff that got cut:
1. Surly Cross Check: I actually regret selling this, but I almost made
back my money on it.
2. Surly Pacer: Hated this. Really uncomfortable.
3. Hunqapillar: Wonderful bike, but just doesn't suit my style of riding
(90% pavement).
4. CAAD10: the first decent bike I ever bought. I really wish I had known
about Rivendell at the time. Then again, I really didn't know what kind of
a rider I was.

[RBW] Re: Bike destinations in Japan and Amsterdam

2017-04-06 Thread ascpgh

Amsterdam is great. I didn't go with an intentional itinerary, just met the
flow when we got there after we saw the state of weather, traffic and such.
Weather, group dynamic and time limitations dictated more than my interest
in biking, but didn't get in the way of some two wheel fun.

Friend in the pictures and I down at the Amsterdam Central Station and the
bike parking garage. We rented city bikes there at the spur of the moment
and ended up riding way out to the northeast in the dairy/cheese areas
where the Beemster porcelain cows mark the diaries that have made the mark
as suppliers. The moment overrode judgment and we ended up riding just shy
of 60 miles on those livery . Finished with a tall Heineken in the outdoor
garden behind the Van Gogh Museum.

I used to ride those, they're really heavy. But they were really

So Brooks is fishing in a new pond for them.

2017-04-06 Thread Johnny Alien
I actually like having a light version of a great Brooks saddle but these
are too narrow for my taste. I ride Brooks for the ride quality and take a
hit on the weight because of that. I believe most people here use smart
parts that they like and deal with the weight disadvantage. If they made a
carbon version of the C15 or C17 I would easily choose them over the
standard version. Why not have the comfortable saddle WITH a reduced
weight. I would love to have an incredibly useful bike that could be
brought down a pound or two. And I understand the "lose 2 pounds off of
the engine" argument and agree with it BUT if it's the same saddle quality
wise and comfort I would pick the lighter one. I assume the counter
argument will be that the carbon rails are destined to fail but I myself
wouldn't think it would be an issue.

I was noting in the link that they seem to be making multiple widths of the
carbon-railed saddle, including a 145mm and a 158mm, so you may be in luck.

Personally, carbon saddles are not for me, but it is cool to see brooks
bringing the idea of a suspended saddle to different markets.

[RBW] Re: Bike destinations in Japan and Amsterdam

2017-04-06 Thread Takashi
Hi John

I am pretty sure that there are rental cycle services in large cities like
Tokyo and Kyoto, but I have no experience with them.
One shop I know of is Ehicle near Shinjuku, Tokyo.
They have Bike Friday's Pocket Companion for rent.
http://blog.livedoor.jp/ehicle/archives/50451863.html

If you prefer to ride in rural areas, you can rent bikes at Shimanami
(http://www.go-shimanami.jp/global/english/bicycle/) or Hida
(http://satoyama-experience.com/activity/cycling/tour/standard/), to give
two examples.
They are both far from Tokyo and Kyoto, though.

In any case, you must be careful to avoid heat stroke, since it will be
(relatively) hot and (very) humid in summer.

I was just surprised that a company like Brooks would build a carbon-framed
saddle. I guess you have to diversify to meet the demands of the market. That
said, the saddle is not an area of the bike where I'd want to risk a carbon
failure. I wonder if these are carbon over a light wire frame, like carbon
wrapped aluminum seatposts, or if these are all carbon.

Re: [RBW] Rivet Pearl or C17 Carved

2017-04-06 Thread Surlyprof
I've seen a few Bertoud saddles in person and they are quite beautiful and well
crafted. Loved the shape, details and finish on those. Unfortunately, I was
already stretching my budget with a Rivet. Not unhappy about that. I've been
so impressed with Rivet's quality and materials. I was also impressed with
their packaging, wrench and saddle cover that all came in the package. Very
positive experience.

[RBW] Re: TRP RRL and 7 speed compatability

2017-04-06 Thread Bill Lindsay
TRP RRL brake levers pull an appropriate amount of cable for road bike
calipers. Typical V-brake calipers require a lot more cable pull. In the
coarsest terms with no specifics short pull levers with long pull requiring
brakes will work but the two frequent complaints are

1. Extremely squishy braking. It's super easy to pull the levers all the way to
the handlebar
2. You have to run the brake pads extremely close to the rims

If the v brakes in question are not actually typical v-brakes but instead are
mini v brakes like Paul Mini Motos or similar, then those two complaints are
significantly mitigated. If the brake posts are positioned in a way that
allows you to run your brake pads all the way up at the top, the math of
mechanical advantage also improves.

So, as usual, it depends

Re: [RBW] Rivet Pearl or C17 Carved

2017-04-06 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
Congrats on the Rivet! I've not ridden one but have seen them in person.
They seem to slope down on the edges of the back of the saddle which is my
problem with the Cambium design. I have many, many Brooks saddles but also
have the Berthoud Mente which is 180mm wide and flat. I find this works
very well for me. The quality is also top rate on the Berthoud.

Re: [RBW] creaking berthoud fenders

2017-04-06 Thread Jim S.
Steve and Eric, thanks for your responses. I think I solved the problem
with a very scientific approach. I took the wheel off and put it back on.
It doesn't creak anymore. I'd guess it had to do with compression on the
fork blades. For a while there, I was wishing I had the SKS's, but all's
well that ends well.

[RBW] Re: Swift Industries luggage?

2017-04-06 Thread Deacon Patrick
I'll advocate something completely different: Waxed canvas. I've steered
away from nylon in the field. It always makes noise, a spark from a fire
melts through it, and it holds odors. I have loved my waxed canvas
Toursacks, and have now switched to Frost River's waxed canvas for both my
saddle bag and panniers (and a few others). Great for everything so far
(day rides, grocery getting, errand running). Looking forward to putting
them through the paces bikepacking. All signs from my use so far say two
thumbs up.

With abandon,
Patrick

Tektro does make a model specifically for V-brakes though. I can't
remember the model number. It looks a little weird because it has an
extended hood because of the longer lever arm.

[RBW] Re: Et Tu Brooks?

2017-04-06 Thread ascpgh
Brooks is going for marketing glam over staid performance and
dependability. Like Minh, I hope it's about adding new buyers whose
patronage will support keeping their more traditional, if not lower volume,
products in production.

If you made a heat map a bicycle of where weight reduction is graphically
related to its impact on ridability or performance, I'd bet it would
highlight the saddle. Wheels would light up for sure, rims, tires and spoke
nipples especially.

Super light saddle rail materials and aluminum nipples live in the same
zone of folly for my uses. After getting in the ring with each of them and
getting the horns from them, I hold them in a special regard. Regardless of
the theoretical benefits, the weight reduction couldn't match the hassles
introduced by each nor substantiate their shorter life span under my uses.

Sometimes predictability and lack of hassle can overcomes a substantial
weight differential. Doesn't sell more Red Bull and probably not Brooks
Saddles to folks who use them for ten years or more.

Neat saddles, but my one foray with a Cambium didn't go well. A leather B17 on

love my ti-rail version: lighter, and the rails are longer than the steel ones.

I haven't purchased a bike in a couple years now but for me its always been
about how the bike looks. If it doesn't meet my narrow definition of cool
then no matter how awesome the bike I'm not interested. For me this means
steel, classic road bike geometry, old school components, and
graphics/colors/names that mesh with my brain. Vintage 60s/70's road
bikes?...YES! Classic Riv roads/Rambo/Bleriot/Saluki/Legolas...YES! I
kind of dig the H.Homers and the Roadeos, etc. but I just can't get past
the names so they aren't in my garage. I also can't get past disc brakes,
brifters, upright bars, and funky designs...I kind of like looking at them
but I just don't want them. I went bonkers for about ten years but I'm
pretty happy now. Here's what I have in order from what gets the most
mileage.

1. Bleriot - awesome. I ride this bike all the time and if forced to pick
one this is it.
2. 77 Trek - Many miles the past couple years
3. 74 Hetchins - sunny day road bike. A visual of what I like?...this is
it.
4. Rock Combo - my mountain\snow\deluge bike
5. 01 Riv custom - sunny day, long distance rider (haven't ridden this in
months!)
6. 71 Paramount - I love this bike but haven't ridden it for awhile.
7. 79 Austro Daimler - recently converted to 650b...should be moving up the
list soon.
8. 72 PX-10 - Hibernating in the crawl space.

[RBW] Re: N = ? or How do you decide how many bikes to own?

2017-04-06 Thread Will
I walked out to the garage. Counted 8 bikes ready to ride: 2 trail bikes, 4
mixtes, 1 sport touring road, 1 Atlantis. There are 4 more bikes, mostly
disassembled. SO N = 12 for 4 of us. Of those 12, 4 are daily riders. All
of the daily riders have Tubus racks and support Ortlieb bags. The other
bikes are place holders. One of the place holders is dedicated to BOB
trailer duty for example.

I ride the Atlantis. I cannot find a reason to ride one of the others. So
for me effectively... N = 1. If I had started with the Atlantis, I'd have a
lot more room in the garage.

[RBW] Re: N = ? or How do you decide how many bikes to own?

2017-04-06 Thread Bill M.
Currently in the stable are three that get ridden regularly, two that don't:

Rawland Nordavinden - the current 'gosortafast' bike for weekend group
rides, 2x10, 32 mm tires. I have a custom frame on order that will replace
this one, due this fall.

Rawland rSogn - randoish build, front bag, 3x8 with a narrow range
cassette, Hetres - I use this one for solo rides with minimal baggage.

Riv Clem - fat tires, rack, panniers - errand runner / grocery getter /
occasional fire road cruiser.

1984 Miyata 1000 - owned since new, will eventually wind up at the family
homestead in Mendocino county to encourage me to get up there more often.

Burley Django recumbent - sitting in the shed unridden for several years

I just finished a tour of 1200 m. with the Conti 700 x 42 tires, rolled

Re: [RBW] N = ? or How do you decide how many bikes to own?

2017-04-06 Thread Lee Legrand
I often thought, still do on occasion of living without a vehicle and soley
by car. It was this reason that I thought I how many bicycle I would need
based on what I would be using the bicycle for.

1. For commuting back and forth to work that was comfortable, not terribly
light, low maintenance and could carry the things I need to get to work. A
foldable bicycle would work great for that.
2. A Pick up bicycle for carrying grocery or large objects. It would have
a small wheel up front and large wheel in the back where the front wheel is
where the load would be applied and the rider is in the back with cable
operation to move the front wheel where you needed it (Francisis Cycles).
3. Randonuer bicycle that function as a randoneur, century or taking a
bicycle for an outing.
4. Touring bicycle to take a week to wander with tent, cooking utensil and
clothes.

It would be a N=4 bicycle.

Can't speak to the Conti's but I recently replaced my worn-out original
Schwalbe Marathon 650Bx38 with Compass Loup-Loup Pass extra-lights of the
same size. The difference is phenomenal! Seat of the pants and watching
average speeds over several common routes indicates the Compass tires are
1-1/2 to 2 mph faster when run at similar pressures. They're also roll a
lot more smoothly. Yeah they're spendy but totally worth it. I couldn't
be happier.
Cheers!
(Probably only about 500 miles so far, but no flats vs. 1 flat per 1,000
miles on the Schwalbe's.)

I'm not sure this is a new thing. The way Brooks has been marketing their
leather saddles is *very* much pushing a lifestyle; it just may be more
obvious with the C-line saddles because you're not used to them.

(And the carbon-railed C's are actually quite nice; they're better than the
steel-railed ones. It's possible that the way the carbon rails flex works
better with the rubber+cotton top than the steel rails did. On my
personal list of saddle comfort the 145mm C13 feels better than the
similarly-widthed Brooks (the Swift?) and Berthoud, if not as nice as the
Berthoud Aspin (I can't speak to the Brooks Pro, even though they used to
be my go-to saddle; after having two of them collapse after only 25k miles
it sort of put me off on them.)

[RBW] Did someone buy Grant's Atlantis?

The other day (yesterday?) there was a Blug post offering Grant's prototype
Atlantis for sale. The price for the frame and fork was $1100 but only $560 if
you bought the parts to build it into a complete bike. The post was only up for
a very short time. I'm hoping some snatched it quick and will post some pics of
the ORIGINAL Atlantis or maybe Grant changed his mind? Or maybe I dreamed this
(not impossible!). Anyone else see this Blug?

[RBW] Re: Et Tu Brooks?

2017-04-06 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
I like leather saddles in general because they look good on the older steel
bicycles I like to ride, and because they are comfortable, and because,
like the older bicycles, they get better looking with age. And they require
you to pay them just a bit of attention. The only "weight disadvantage"
that needs to be dealt with is in the mind. Even if you are a category 2
racing BOB, you will never lose a race because you rode with a leather
saddle. I personally guarantee it;^)

We must continually make new stuff because our economy does not work unless
per capita consumption continues to increase. This is why many of us are in
a permanent state of dissatisfaction, yearning for the next better new
thing. I stick mostly with leather to avoid all the stress, though I admit
to being curious when a particular saddle gets a rave here or over at iBOB.
What sublime luxury am I denying my posterior? I don't doubt there are more
comfortable saddles out there. But which ones? I can't afford the research.

Yikes! Too many choices. *http://tinyurl.com/kypp5kf*
