[RBW] Hand made hack quick release Fenders!

2015-10-26 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch

After asking the group for fender recommendations, I bought Velo Oranges
stainless. I found them to be too heavy, and they did not give me enough
tire clearance. I then went and looked at Woody's wood fenders and found
them to be too heavy too, and too thick for clearance with my 2.25 tires.

The fenders I used are Planet Bikes quick release model. The stock
attachments are terrible, so I made fender clips that snap onto my *racks*,
from ABS, using a heat gun, and they snap on with authority. I fine tuned
the front ones for a safety release in case I suck up a stick. The fenders
snap on and off in about 40 seconds. They are laterally far more rigid than
all the permanent mounted fenders I have tried, as the wire stays are
shorter and splay out more. I glued and riveted a thin compound curved
stainless strip to the front fender to increase lateral stiffness, which
helped a wee bit. I had to remove and reposition the rear stock stays. You
can see how short they are.

I am rather surprised and very happy on how well these work.

[RBW] Re: My Rivendell Rodeo build

2015-10-26 Thread reynoldslugs
Hi Bruce, I have a question about those Campagnolo flat bar shifters - -
specifically, can you share your thoughts on how they work with the front
derailleur shifts?. Can you trim the front derailleur?

Or is the front shift a "big click," like the Shimanos?

I love the build you did, and would like to try flat bars + Campagnolo flat
bar shifters on a couple bikes (including a Roadeo), but I'm not sure how
the front derailleur would work with my triples and wide range doubles.

That's a great color for your Roadeo, and a nice build. Mine's a 2010, and
also has a Campagnolo drive train, hence my interest in your flat bar
shifters. Pix here:

[RBW] Re: What fenders will best fit this frame?

2015-10-26 Thread Patrick Moore
Well, I got the curved, wood fender sample from Cody today and, while it
will just work under the front caliper, it is too tight under the rear. So,
it's either plastic fenders (hacked; either narrow 700 c bent to fit 25"
wheels, or wide 26" fenders somehow trimmed for the tight spots) or try to
re-curve wooden ones, or hacking wooden ones.

I'd be grateful to see more photos of interrupted fenders, ie using metal
brackets under the tight spots at bridge and crown.

I wonder if it's possible to get wooden fenders (curved) with the
separation under the tight spots, and, instead of metal strips/brackets to
join them, use sections of metal fenders to do so -- this to give coverage
under the calipers. Anyone?

I'm leaning toward getting 35-40 mm 700C metals and trying the "billiard
ball" method to reshape them. Any advice for this sort of hack?

Thanks.

[RBW] Schwalbe Marathon Supreme vs. Jack Brown Blue

2015-10-26 Thread john
I'm a big fan of the Jack Brown Greens! I run them on my Hillborne.
However, they're now painfully thin, and I keep flatting. As the Hillborne
is now my commuter - as opposed to speedster - and I dislike flatting on
commutes, I'm considering which tires to replace them with.

Are the Jack Blues noticeably better at preventing flats than the Greens?
And, how do they compare with the Marathon Supremes? Do the Supremes feel
heavy and sluggish, or do they ride okay?

Which would you choose for a commuter, one that you want to roll well?

Thanks.

Re: [RBW] Schwalbe Marathon Supreme vs. Jack Brown Blue

2015-10-26 Thread clyde canter
The Blues or the Supremes won't come close to the ride quality of the
Greens. I've had all three. I would favor the Blues over the Supremes.
It is my "opinion" that the Supremes were the most overpriced component
I've purchased. They are tough, but so are so many other tires and their
ride is not all that great at all. Again "opinion".
On the other end of the spectrum I find the rubber of the JBs, ruffy tuffy.
rolly polly to hold small chunks of glass better than any tire I"ve ridden.
Therefore I wasn't fond of all the flats I got with the Greens.

Could one buy 26" plastic or metal fenders, 50 mm wide, and cut them to fit
between stays and fork legs?

Like these:

Or, even better, these:

[RBW] Re: FS Waterford T-14 64cm

2015-10-26 Thread MartyG
Frame arrived today in fine shape, thanks to member Paul. Beautiful color I
must say. Wheels are Rich-built Dyads with a White ENO hub out back as I
plan to set it up as a sturdy rail-trail one-off. I'm running 38mm Schwalbe
Marathon Cross tires - they fit swell. Need to start scavenging parts from
other biles to finish the build, but I can tell it will be a fantastic
ride. Will be using Paul Neo-retro brakes, maybe a Paul crankset, and
various other nice bits. I have more than one Paul to thank I guess! Will
be recording the fun in this Flickr album:

[RBW] Re: Schwalbe Marathon Supreme vs. Jack Brown Blue

2015-10-26 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
I have commuted with Supremes on my Hillborne for several years. They get
almost no flats, and are much much lighter than any other "flat-proof"
tire. The trade-offs are right for me, but I was on Marathon pluses before.
No time for flats.

[RBW] Re: What fenders will best fit this frame?

2015-10-26 Thread Patrick Moore
About cutting "divots" in the fenders to fit between fork legs and stays:
This will, obviously, make the fenders at least slightly weaker and more
prone to flex. But are not the fenders supported largely by the stays? Or,
could one not reinforce the trimmed area with a metal bracket?

Re: [RBW] Re: What fenders will best fit this frame?

2015-10-26 Thread Tim Gavin
Yes, you could easily mill away some cutouts so the fender fits around
narrow stays. SKS chromoplastics are very easy to cut with a roto-tool
like a dremel.

Cut slowly and carefully. Any cut you make creates a future weakness for
cracking, so keep your cutouts nice and round.

Re: [RBW] Re: What fenders will best fit this frame?

2015-10-26 Thread Tim Gavin
Sure. I'd start with a lighter reinforcement, like metallic tape (for
furnace ducts).

The rear of the fenders are well-supported by the stays, but the section
forward of the fork is only self-supported. If you tack it to the bottom
of a front rack it would be pretty secure.

I sent this mss to Cody who makes custom wood fenders, asking for his

opinions about off the shelf possibilities.

A narrow fender -- about 40 mm wide overall -- but with a shallow
profile would fit best, but this would have to be made for a tire with a
diameter just shy of 25". No one makes such a beast, as far as I know.

I've mounted 35 and 40 mm PB and SKS 700 c fenders which have a nice,
shallow profile, but there is inevitably deformation near the brake bridge
and crown as the fender is forced to follow a tighter curve than its radius
 is meant for.

the 40 mm 650B Berthoud fits the curve better than any other off the
shelf one, but the profile is too tight.

All the 559 bsd fenders I've seen are 50 or 60 mm wide. I suppose I
could cut out sections under crown and stays ...?

It seems wood, custom, is the best option, but do y'all have better
 ideas?

 From original email:

Attachment would be at threaded bosses under crown and bridge.

Gap under front brake caliper is about 11 mm.

Gap under rear brake caliper is about 8 mm.

Rear fender would end just short of rearmost portion of tire; in other
words, it would be short so that I can shove the bike into a car without
putting pressure on the rear fender. I measure 34" from chainstay bridge to
the position on the tire where I'd like fender to end; note that this
measurement is with tape lying on the tire itself; if the fender is ~1cm
above, perhaps that would add additional length?

Front would be long enough to bolt to the light mount/rack support
arch. Distance from center of fork crown to 1" beyond arch is 11.5"; again,
this is measured with tape lying on the tire.

Overall length from arch to where I'd like it above ground is 32" --
again, measured with tape lying on tire.

What do you recommend for the best fit, flat or curved. Which is less
likely to warp? I'm more interested in fit and durability than fancy finish
 or pattern.

[RBW] Long vs Short Brake pads

2015-10-26 Thread Michael Hechmer
I have a new pair of new long orange pads on my Trek, but found they
crowded the tire removal because they bumped up against the fork when
opened. I swapped them out for a shorter black pair from a TeKtro and was
not happy with the braking. So, I wonder, how much of the difference is
the length and how much is the compound? I assume the carriers are
different but haven't looked closely at that.

[RBW] Re: Long vs Short Brake pads

2015-10-26 Thread Garth

I trimmed off the rear portion of the KS Eagle 2(smooth post , one
piece molded style) Salmon pads and notice no difference in braking . I've
also noted no real difference between the KS black and salmon when dry, and
maybe a marginal but nothing to write home about difference in the rain,
but I don't ride alot in the rain !

[RBW] FS: 61 Bleriot

2015-10-26 Thread soqer...@gmail.com
I am selling my 61 Bleriot.
I have have a scan of the original invoice with the parts, as well as pics
I am happy to share.
I have ridden this maybe 500 miles. Degenerative discs (spine, not
brakes) are keeping me off bikes.
When I had this built, I had a long discussion with Grant about hand
positions, shifters, etc.
Accordingly, this has a unique set up. There is a thumb shifter for the
rear, and a bar end for the front, and a single interrupter brake also. I
believe there was a write up in the Reader at one point - sort of has to be
seen to be understood.
Some highlights:

1) Maxy Fasty tires (Fatty Rumpkins are included)
2) Pedals are flip-flop
3) Comes with grey Nigel Smythe bag and silver hoop
4) Topeak speedometer included
5) SKS fenders included
6) Brooks saddle cover included

$1,750.
I will only sell in person in the Bay Area, and will meet within 5 miles of
RBW.
Thanks

Hi John, the Supremes run pretty nice. A heavier/slower than JB Greens, but

Maybe run some Slime tubes for extra protection?

[RBW] Re: Schwalbe Marathon Supreme vs. Jack Brown Blue

2015-10-26 Thread dougP
John:

I've used the Marathon Supremes for several years in both 35 & 40 mm size
in thousands of miles of touring. I hate flats, and they exceed their
reputation for durability. The best case was 11,000 miles on a front with
zero flats (knock wood; probably lotsa luck there). Typically only 1 or 2
flats in the life of a tire, and usually at least 6,000 miles on a rear.

No experience with either of Riv offerings but I did have the chance to
ride some supple 38 mm tires that sold me on a set of Soma C-lines (another
variation from Panaracer) when they came out. The difference in ride &
comfort was a pleasant surprise. Flats did increase, and the rear wore out
in about half the time of a Marathon Supreme.

Were I commuting to work, and needing to show up on time & presentably
clean, I'd go with the Schwalbes. As to the ride quality, well, I never
thought they were rough until I tried something lighter. Now they feel
"just OK".

Compound. I had the same clearance problem with Koolstop one piece molded
pads. I just flipped them around so the long side faces forward & gained
enough clearance to easily remove the front wheel. Can't detect any
difference in braking performance with V-brakes. Do NOT try this with
cartridge pads!

[RBW] Re: Schwalbe Marathon Supreme vs. Jack Brown Blue

2015-10-26 Thread Ron Mc
No offense David, taking exception on the rolling. The marathon supremes
are some of the fastest-rolling big tires out there. The Jack Browns ride
much nicer, but don't roll quite as well.
My experience with Kevlar belts is they don't prevent any more flats, but
they slow them down - it takes longer for the bits of glass to get to the
tube (possibly weeks)

Used it for less than a year and it only ever supported a saddlebag, so I'm
downsizing rear racks.
185$ shipped?

" it takes longer for the bits of glass to get to the tube (possibly weeks)"

That reminds me of a "commuting tip" I read somewhere long ago. Assuming
weekly maintenance (chain, air pressure, etc.) an item on the list was to
carefully inspect the tires for glass, staples, etc., all the crap that
gets in there to eventually work its way thru to the tube. PITA but less
trouble than changing tubes on the way to work. Especially if you can't
find what cause the problem.

[RBW] Racks for the Clem

2015-10-26 Thread Tim Wood
As the shipping date for my Clem draws nearer I am at an impasse with regard to
accessories. I'm pretty sure the Sks B65 fenders are the way to go, and a front
mounted wald basket is mandatory, but racks are still a question mark. I have a
Tubus Tara front low rider laying around but it's black and I want to stick to
a silver theme. Right now the front rack choices I'm tossing around are:

-surly nice rack (can mount the basket and tons o'pannier)
-soma porteur deluxe (as above)
-a combination of the Tubus Tara for panniers and a Nitto m18/mark's rack for
the basket
-the $30 soma front rack would get me rolling with a basket with less output
but I question its strength. My basket needs to be able to tote at least 12
cans of beer

For the rear I like the daija works or an axiom journey, or even a matching
surly nice if I went that route on the front. I also like the look of the
sackville med bag so maybe I don't really need a spendy rear rack.

What should I do? My rational side says wait till the bike gets here and feel
it out, but part of me wants it ready to roll when it arrives. Bottom line, I
should be riding more and searching the internet less

Advice is welcomed.

-Tim

would like to swap for a previously-undisclosed, light-greyish, sam
