Compound.  I had the same clearance problem with Koolstop one piece molded 
pads.  I just flipped them around so the long side faces forward & gained 
enough clearance to easily remove the front wheel.  Can't detect any 
difference in braking performance with V-brakes.  Do NOT try this with 
cartridge pads!
