What's the difference? If you're a loser you're a loser. YOU are the
"competitive disadvantage" and anything to do with the bike is just a
distraction from that fact.

So why try to avoid it? Embrace it! Luke, it is your destiny. Might
as well be comfortable while doing so, so bring on the country bikes...

Well, since I created the thread and its title, I'll take the
opportunity to clarify. In fact, a compact double and some bigger
tires are exactly what I had in mind as what was "needed" in terms of
equipment (which would have given their users a competitive advantage
unless everyone used them). But the subtext, of course, was that some
country bike attitude was "needed" as well. Someday all those lycra-
lugged losers walking their expensive toys up the hill are going to
wonder what it was that attracted them to the sport. With any luck,
right about that time, a friend will hand them a battered 1994 Bicycle

> Tim, what is the difference in those two bikes?

The main difference is the weight of the frame and forks, probably
some other places. The weights I gave were "back in the day." Most
of the components are now the same (literally, because the Campy
Chorus 9 sp that used to be on the race bike is now on the 'cross
bike; brakes, seatpost, saddle, bars and stem are different). I
haven't weighted the 'cross bike in its new configuration.

The race bike is a custom-built-for-someone-else-about-my-size
Ritchey (fillet brazed throughout) that I bought in 1998 or 1999 and
built up with Campy Ergo. It is, without a doubt, the best handling
bike I have ever ridden. I dunno what it is that Tom Ritchey did
when he came up with his frame design, but's it is the perfect
balance of nimbleness and stability. It is built up now for the kind
of riding I do most of these days- fun rides! I haven't weighed in
in the new configuration, either. (Don't really care any more- I
don't measure my fun with a bike computer like I used to).

The 'cross bike is a Gunnar Crosshairs (TIG'd) with a fork upgrade to
the W-ford 'cross fork (lugged) (BTW it's one of three Waterford-
built bikes in our house- my All-Rounder, my wife's Heron Road being
the other two; none of them are actually Waterford branded). Back
when I raced 'cross it was built up with Sun Tour Superbe Pro with an
Ultegra 6500 read wheel. I used Avocet 700 x 32 Duros on the road
and Ritchey 700 x 28 'cross tires for 'cross races; they were almost
exactly the same size. The Gunnar is very stable and rides well on
the pavement- maybe just a bit stodgy, actually, but it really comes
alive off-road. I also used it for a tour in the Alps in 2002 and a
brevet series and PBP attempt in 2003.

http://www2.bitstream.net/~timmcn/alps2002-1.html

http://www2.bitstream.net/~timmcn/brevets-2003.html

I've never weighed the frames and forks of either bike, so I don't
know what the weight difference might be between them. The Ritchey
is built with what I recall is Tange Prestige quad butted tubing; the
Gunnar is built with Reynolds 853- I suspect this is pretty
conservatively spec'd given that it's intended for off-road racing.
The bare Ritchey frame and fork are very light in hand, the Gunnar
not particularly so. I can't imagine more than a pound's difference
between them, though- if even that, maybe more like 6-8 ounces. The
rest must have been in the components on the Gunnar- the heavier
Ultegra rear wheel, longer seat post, Dia-Compe cantis, etc.

2009-03-15 Thread MichaelH

Thanks Eric,

Boy it seems pretty early in the year to being doing a century, even
on a tandem. Of course, here in Vt. the cycling season is just
beginning for hard core riders. I've been laid up with a bum foot for
six months now, so any riding sounds awfully good to me.

I'd love to hear your opinions about the tandem. I've got my wife to
agree, at least in principal, to buying one, but since there are no
dealers in VT, it takes a lot of effort just to look at one. Montreal
about 2 hours away and Boston is 3 1/2.

>From what I can gather on the web, Santana or Bilenkey would be my
leading choices. The Santana web site has lots of words, but ends up
being short on critical info, like tire capacity, fender & rack
attachments, etc. Also, everybody quotes prices for whole bikes,
including stuff I don't think I want, like a carbon fork, and 10 speed
SIS. Without any experience, it's hard to know what's really
essential in a good tandem.

There have been Riv rumors about a tandem for quite awhile and I'd be
game for a proto, if the price wasn't stratospheric.

If you can find one that's the right size - a used or NOS burley is a

[RBW] Re: First Century

2009-03-15 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Congrats on the first century. I've been vowing to do my first century for
the better part of a decade. We'll see. The two local centuries are the
Santa Fe century in early May -- starts too early in the am to drive 60
miles from Albuquerque, and then it's hilly, not so good on a fixed gear --
and the much more recently established Albuquerque century. If the latter is
held again this year (this will be year 3) I may do it, since it's a lot
flatter than the SF century.

Patrick "I'm a Picassa man myself" Moore, who just braved an
uphill-with-headwind leg from church on his 75" Joe-built custom fixed
gofast.

PS: I just this morning removed the Lizard Skin lower headset race
wraparound seal (it velcro's in place) after many years. The Tange Roller
Ball hs is the original with the bike and has 9300 miles on it with no
overhaul. Can I attribute this longevity to the LS seal, or will the lower
race be fine without it? (No fenders on this one -- fenders on all 3 of my 4
others, and I plan to be-fender #4 -- which is ridden in dry but dusty
conditions.)

[RBW] 'Country' Rivs ride rainy roads today

2009-03-15 Thread Joan Oppel

Today two Bleriots bounced around the unpaved roads near Middleburg,
Virginia for about 38 miles. Precipitation prediction was 90%, it had
rained most of the night and most local club rides were canceled, but
one fellow who scheduled a “rustic” ride said he was heading out. So
two of us went with our Bleriots. Four other people showed up as well.

The ride was about 90% on unpaved roads, and I think the Bleriot is the
perfect bike for this kind of riding. The surface ranges from packed
dirt, to loose gravel to jarring washboard and randomly scattered pot
holes. But the countryside is beautiful and the horses came to greet us
whenever we stopped near one of their fences. We saw new calves running
in the fields. Even though it was cloudy – and we had light rain for
about half the ride, we had lovely vistas and great views of mountain
partly shrouded in mist.

I wasn’t going to ride but my friend said, let’s go! For me, this kind
of riding is possible because of the Bleriot - the way it handles just
gives me a lot of confidence (though it is my only Riv).

[RBW] Re: First Century

2009-03-15 Thread David Estes
Michael, tandems are wonderful! They equalize riding between unequal
riders, so there's no waiting or hard feelings or anyone getting exhausted.
If you and your wife ride at the same level (speed & endurance) it's not as
big a deal, but if one is significantly stronger, it's the only way to enjoy
the ride together. My wife ended up selling all her single bikes after we
got into tandems.

I'd try to find an older Santana model. Rio is one of them, can't remember
the others. We bought one used and loved it. Sold it for what we paid and
bought a Co-Motion Double Espresso. Again used, but it was an upgrade and
had 700C wheels. Tandems seem rather easy to find used it you're a bit
patient, and significantly less expensive than new. Most are sized S, M, L,
XL, so it's rather easy to find a good size for you.

I'd encourage you to jump on in, the water's fine!

Cheers,
DE

[RBW] SoCal March Riv-Ride

2009-03-15 Thread David Estes
Another one in the can. 60 miles on the beach is hart to beat, just
sayin'. Ride left Oceanside, making its way through Camp Pendleton, then
past Trestles along old PCH and into San Clemente. From there it's probably
80% bike path (mixed terrain!) to Doheney State Beach. Hung out there
looking at the marine mammal display and chillin' with the Girl Scouts. Six
year olds make you appreciate these things :-) PERFECT weather, although a
bit of a headwind on the return leg. I only rode the middle 20 miles of the
ride due to getting over a virus. But I did pull an extra 100lbs of rolling
cargo (that occasionally supplied propulsion). I hope everyone had a good
time!

Most folks were from San Diego and Redlands, but Aaron came down from Santa
Monica (proving that yes indeed, the freeways do go south, L.A. people)
and our guest of honor, Jim Thill joined us all the way from Minneapolis,
MN. I mean if he can make the effort... :-) Tim W. made it out for a bit
of the ride, as he's doing a West Coast run from Santa Fe, NM.

So, long-short: Beautiful day, good people, even pizza and beer. My photos
are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/sets/72157615341007502/
Keep an eye out for the others and join us in April! Now accepting route
suggestions/submissions!

There should be a bit of a get-together at the San Diego Bicycle Show on
either the 4th or 5th as well!
