Re: changing interface language of the mac with lion
Hi. I assume you have Lion, so the following steps should change the language: 1: Open the language and text settings in System preferences 2: Navigate to the language table and interact 3: Find the dutch language with your VO cursor and not just by pressing the arrow keys 4: Press VO comma to start the drag and drop feature in VOiceover and wait a few seconds until VOiceover says the process has finnished 5: Move the VO cursor up to the very top of the table and press VO period to place the dutch language at the top of the table. Now the dutch language should be at the top of the table. Restart your computer and the whole system should be back to dutch again. Hi. On my Macbook pro 15 inch, I can only bring up the downloads folder if I'm running safari in full screen. If I don't have the full screen activated by pressing command ctrl f, then Voiceover just says something like showing the downoads folder. I have not hidden my toolbar. Hi. Well, that's a big question. Do you know all about cables and connections? If not then I need to know what connecters you have access to. I don't know much about external cameras and mikes, so I'll skip that one. Regarding keyboards, I really like Apples wireless keyboard. I don't know any accessible app which can totally control your Mini from an IOS device. If you are using iTunes, then you have some great controls in the remote app Apple has made. But if you're using VLC like me because I wanna have some control over my music and folder structure, then you have the VLC control app. You need to have in mind that if you connect your sound system with an digital cable, you can't control the master volume from the computer or any app. that needs to be adjust on your sound system. Hi Esther. So you have a Macbook pro 15 inch? Safari works differently with VOiceover on a 15 inch Macbook. I've experienced things like focusing issues in java windows, the mouse getting stuck on the desctop while moving it to the webpage with VO command f5, and clicking by pressing VO shift spacebar and the other weird issue by bringing up the downloads folder. I know people who have a macbook 13 inch and an iMac, where this doesn't happen. Hi esther. I have had this issue on my Macbook Pro since Snowleopard. I find it even more weird that this doesn't happen on all Macbook Pro 15 inch models. I've been very confused regarding this issue which is the reason for I haven't reported this to Apple. I just don't know how to explain the issue good enough because I do have lots of different focusing issues while browsing the internet using Safari. Hi. The reason for that is because your language rotor is set to "standard" instead the language you're using. This tells Voiceover to use the standard language which will change if websites are coded in different languages. Hi. I'm sorry that I totally misunderstood your question. You have to manually switch voice and language on the mac. This can quickly be done by holding down the VO keys and command, then choose voice by pressing the left or right arrow and then switch to the voice you need by using the up and down arrows. Hi. Backing up videos and fotos is very easy. 1: Plug your phone to your Macbook with the USB cable 2: Find the foto transfering app in your aplications folder. Hi. That depends if the command opens websides in different tabs. If this is the case, I don't remember the shortcut key for switching tabs, but try ctrl tab. I find Voiceovers window chooser easier when it comes to switching to an other window. The shortcut key is VO f2 twice. That works all the time. Hi. Let's see if I can explain how it works, because it's a bit tricky to explain: After you've entered a name of a person in the search field in the toolbar, you can use the up and down arrows to choose where you wanna search. You can choose between the body text, the from field and the subject field. Please note that when you've chosen one of these categories, you can't spell what you've writen by using the arrow keys. The text you've written will be shown as a group. The reason for that is because you can make multiple groups. Let's take an example to clear up any confusion my explanation might give: You can find this mail by doing the following: Copy my name to your clipboard because of the danish letter in my name: Søren Jensen Go to your inbox and find the search field in the toolbar Paste in my name, press the down arrow to VOiceover says: From: Søren Jensen, popup button press return and then press the spacebar to make a new search category. Type this subject: Searching mail, and then press the down arrow again until you come to: subject and press the return key again. Now you have these two categories which you can read by pressing the left and right arrow keys. Now, back to your question on how to search in mails in your trash folder: When you've typed in the name of the person you wanna search for, chosen that you wanna search in the from field and then pressed the return key, stop interacting with the toolbar and then move the VO cursor right to the favorite group. I'm sorry if I got that item wrong in english since my system is currently in danish. Interact with this group and there you can choose what folder you wanna see the search results from. Enableing VOiceover on Apple tv
Hi. I got a question from someone who have an Apple tv, who's asking how to activate Voiceover? As far as I understand, you should be able to turn VOiceover on by pressing the menu button 3 times. He says this doesn't work. Does he really need to go into the settings to enable and desable voiceover all the time? Or, what is he doing wrong? Facebook frustration
Hi. Before I give up and consider deleting my Facebook account, I'll bring up discussion to see if any of you have considered the same frustrations when using Facebook. I've read on Applevis that setting Safari to react like Firefox or Internet explorer should make the mobile site of Facebook very useable. That won't work for me all the time. I experience things like the language changes, normal links which I could read a few seconds ago are translated into english graphical links, and when I click on these, nothing happens. The only way I can come back to the site again is by reloading the page, and if that won't work, I type m.facebook.com again in the address bar to reload the page. Then I'm able to navigate the site for a few minutes, and then the same happens over and over again. this makes the site nearly impossible and very frustrating to use! I've got a mail from Facebook telling me that someone has tagged me on a picture. If I click the link to show what picture it is and to comment, the normal unusable Facebook site comes up. I expected to find this notification on the mobile version, but I can't find it anywhere while going through my frontpage. How do I figure out what picture some random person has tagged me on, and how do I add a comment so I can ask this question? Each time I'm trying to give Facebook a chance I run into issues like this. Every time I spoke to other blind people who're using Facebook, they don't use these features, they keep say just use the mobile site or they don't have a Mac where all these issues seems to happen. The Facebook support says that screenreader users just have to use the mobile site, but what do we do when they only supports Internet explorer? I'm really considering deleting my Facebook acount and make the totally switch to Twitter. If family and friends won't follow, well, that's their choice. I find myself spending hours on trying to navigate the Facebook site. SOmetimes it works and other times it's just impossible. I really hope to get lots of great input here... Hi. Wow, thanks so much for all your replies. It seems as I have to experiment some more with the normal Facebook page again. I don't know what causes this weird language switching issue. It wouldn't make much sense if I recorded what happens, because the main page is in danish. I have had some weird issues on my 15 inch Macbook pro in Safari, which other people who are using a Macbook pro 13 inch or an iMac never had experienced. I don't know if that goes for Facebook as well. On the normal Facebook page, Voiceover suddenly jumps randomly around, or Safari says busy all the time, which makes it difficult to navigate. I'll try to clear up the cash in Safari to see if that helps, or simply try with Google Chrome. :) thanks for explaining how to comment on the photo I'm tagged on. I'll try this. I'll let you know if I figure out something regarding these issues I'm having. Question about Airplay and Apple tv
Hi. How does Airplay work in Mountain Lion with an Apple tv? I have a Mac mini connected to my surround receiver in my living room. It would be awesome if I could just use an apple tv instead and use my Mini for other things. Then I don't have to boot it up just to listen to some music. I don't use iTunes, because I don't want a program to re-organize my music, which I manually have put into folders for more than 10 years. So therefore I use VLC. I can't find anything about Airplay in Mountain Lion, but I don't have an Apple Tv, so that might be the reason. Does Air play work with VLC or any other programs than iTunes? How do I inable it and how does it work in general? I have looked at Apples website, but I can't find that information. It just says that I can inable airplay everywhere, but how? As someone said earlier, you have to do the following: 1: Go into system preferences on your mac 2: Go into keyboard 3: Choose the shortcut tab or whatever it's called 4: Choose mission control in the first table 5: Uncheck all shortcut keys in the other table and then it all works without any issues. As I said, you have to uncheck all shortcut keys for Mission controls as well. It's not enough to just uncheck Mission control but also all its shortcut keys like the f keys etc. Is that what you've done? Hi. The best solution is simply to use an other screenreader like NVDA. Jaws has lots of issues in Fusion because updates or any changes might change the virtual machine so Jaws just drop the licens. Well, the point of Facebook is the same as the point of Twitter: Sharing what you're doing and keep in touch with your friends. :) I don't like Facebook for lots and lots of reason, but I really like Twitter cause it's simple and accessible. I love how my Mac and iPhone works together with twitter, and I like the fast way to read the news. I haven't got used to all twitters features yet though. If Facebook was more accessible, I might use it just a bit, since all people here in my country use it all the time. Some peoples life is even stored on Facebook and they can't live without it. I wish people here would switch to Twitter or something more accessible, but Facebook is what people enjoy here, because all their friends are on Facebook and just because others enjoy it without many reasons. I totally agree. Internet on the iPhone is awesome. I use it every day in different apps. Well this is of course a personal thing, but what is the point of having an iphone without using it on the internet? There's a huge difference between using the phone on websites using Safari and using it on the internet in generel with apps, which would have been off-topic if I didn't mentioned the Twitter app. :) I wish people would stay on-topic instead talking about the weather. Does your printer have any USB connection? I hear that the serial adapters doesn't work well. Otherwise I don't know how to connect the device to your Mac. If it does have any usb connection, I might have a solution for you which works in Windows. Re: Mounting a network drive
Hi. This is a very annoying known issue in Lion. I don't remember what Apple scrued up but they broke some of the protocols which cause this issue. The easiest thing you can do is press command k in Finder, and type the following: smb:// and then the name on your network drive. Here is an example: smp://server and then press enter. If you have more than one network drive, you can store these as your favorit drives. Otherwise you just have to write this once, and then the address to your network drive won't be deleted next time you press command k. Annoying security issue
Hi. I've just bought a new awesome Tv tuner and the full version of EyeTv. I've installed EyeTv on both Mac computers, and it works without any issues on my MacBook Pro. When my Mac Mini boots up, it comes up with an error telling me that Eye connect hasn't ben started because it doesn't have the right security settings. I don't have any idea on how or where to start it since it's just a service and not the EyeTv app. My firewall is turned off in OSX and I've opened the required port on my router. The Eye Connect is required for communication between EyeTv and my Iphone on a 3g connection. I really hope someone can help here because I'm totally lost. Donna: try to press a dot 1 3 5 chord and dot 2 4 6 chord to flick between pages. That works on the displays I've tried, but it might work differently on the different Braille displays. I hope Apple will make a list of these Braille commands soon, so we don't have to figure it out on our own through the VOiceover practise screen. Hi. It works for me if I find the heading called Play Legasy, press VO command f5 to move the mouse to the heading and press the physically mouse button on mmy Macbook. I've read on audiogames forum that others have trouble to gain focus on the flash window on their Windows machines with screenreaders. I also have issues on my xp machine with Jaws. Whatever I do, I can't gain focus on the flash window. It's pretty cool that it works better on my Mac than on my Windows machine. While sending Maccessibility news on the list
Hi. It would be nice if the whole news from Maccessibility was send to the list instead just a preview. What do you all think? I find it pretty annoying to read the first part of an interesting text and then I have to click the link to open the website to read the rest of the news. I really like to receive the news from Maccessibility, but it would be nice to get the whole news instead just the half of it. I see it's an issue for dialup users if they pay for each mb they send and receive. I didn't thought anyone used dialup connections anymore. f it really does matter for dialup users if the maccessibility news is send like a preview or if the whole news is being send, the news could be send in plane text so we just have to copy the links into the webbrowser. If I was on a dialup connection, I wouldn't subscribe to lists like this cause of the mount of trafic each day. If dialup users use Imap in their mail client, it won't make any difference because Imap doesn't download the mails to the computer. I must say I don't see the reason for not sending the whole news out on the list. If dialup users is the reason, I'll gladly come up with more salutions. Hi. I have the following icons on my Apple tv which I can't figure out what are used for: MLB tv, NVA, Vidia, Flicker and WSJ Live. Does somebody know what those are used for, and where I can read more about it? Contacting the Netflix team regarding accessibility, I am so excited
Hi all. I have just chatted with the Netflix team regarding better accessibility, and that was an awesome and really exciting experience. The chat works so amazingly well, so I have never seem anything like this before. perfectly accessible with VOiceover in Safari. The whole Netflix team is extremely friendly, and they do care about accessibility, and take my requests very seriously. I have requested accessibility when watching movies and tv shows on their website, because the Microsoft Silver light program is totally inaccessible. I requested better accessibility on Windows as well, and told them that I find their website very accessible with all screenreaders. I reported an issue with their Netflix app for iPhone, where I can't select a new movie. When I dubble tab on a new video, the previous video I saw just started to play. I told them how well Netflix works on the Apple tv, and that's the reason for I just have paied a new subscription. I requested audio descriptions as well, since I can't buy that here in Denmark, and BBC who have audio described movies in their online BBC player won't let me buy a sucscription, and they even blog all IP addresses outside the UK, so I have to do that in ileagle ways if I wanna get audio described movies and stuff. The Netflix team told me that they take this accessibility request very serious, and they will do what they can do to make it all more accessible for everyone. They said that all accessibility requests from blind and visually impaired people are very welcome. So, guys, please, go to netflix.com or whatever the Netflix address is in your country, and let the team know that we are here, and we want better accessibility in Netflix, and audio description as well. Netflix is as far as I know, the biggest online movie streaming service in the world, which offers their service in most countries in the world. The best and most exciting thing is that they are so friendly and take the accessibility requests so seriously. So please, take your time to let our voices heard if you want better accessibility. Hi. You can find the videos and tv showes on their website, and when you click on those, it starts to play. But the player which is Microsoft Silver lite is not accessible at all. So you can't, as far as I know, navigate to the next show if you're watching a tv show, or fast forward in a movie. But if you only wants to watch movies from the beginning to the end, it works fine. If you stop a movie while it's playing, you can choose to watch the movie where you left it. I haven't played much around with the ipHone app, but I have an issue where I can't select a new video to play. When I try to do so, the privious video starts to play. YOu can sign up for a 30 day trial, but be aware that if you don't cancel your subscription, they will automatically take the money next month from your bank account. Question to Transmit: How do I retry when a upload fails?
Hi. THe subject says it all. I'm uploading lots of files to a ftp server where I sometimes got disconnected. Then it says a file can't be uploaded, and I can choose to continue uploading the rest of the files. Well, there are still some files missing, and I can't choose to retry those files. Am I missing something, or do I have to upload those manually again? Hi Martin. I have had exactly the same issue, and I have fighted a big war to get this fixed, and I hate Java for doing that. I have wann the war which makes me happy, but we'll fase big issues in the future, if Java still won't care about accessibility. I am so tired to fight that accessibility war each time Java updates their app, and for me, I just want a system to access my bank which just works. I don't wanna sit there in more than 5 hours, trying to find a solution to access my bank, but Java want us to do so. :) Java has simply chosen, once again, to not care about accessibility. Apple has stopped working with Java, so therefore we have this issue now. For those who don't have any issues at the moment, I can tell you that you'll get the same issue when you update to the newest Java version. Mark: Who should I contact regarding this issue? Apple don't care because they don't work together with Java anymore, and Java is very difficult to reach. I have tried without much success. So any suggestions are very welcome. Hi. Wow, what a huge topic I made just before I went out from my house just a few hours ago. :) Regarding people who can't get this game to work, you should check what system voice you're using. If you use a big voice which use lots of resources, it might not work. And, if you use a system voice which isn't english, it might not work as well. I haven't tried that, so I can't make sure yet. Just something which came to mind. I didn't had time to play the game before I went out, but I opened up the game and read the tutorial. I had some issues on turning off VOiceover after I launched the game, because the system voice took over so Voiceover was kind of crashed. That got fixed after the system voice has stopped reading, and it all worked fine for me. I bought it many years ago then I was a kid. That might be a year after it got released. I bought a game pack from ESP Softworks which included Monkey bisness, ESP Pinball and Changereaction. My english was really not that good this time, so I never understood the rules in change reaction. I still don't fully understand it as I write this, but I'm sure I'll do after I've tried the game a few times. There is just one thing which confuses me: Where are the details of the other game modes mentioned? If they are mentioned in the tutorial, I just read too fast. :) Anyways, thanks for a nice game guys. I've looked so much forward to this moment, and I'm sure next year will be the gaming year for the blind community. Keep up the awesome work, and if you need more beta testers, I'm very interested. I'm beginning to understand what to do, but sometimes, I find it hard to hear the difference between dollar and dime when it's said in high pitch. Hi Krister and others. Well, I have understood more of the gameplay so far. The pitch simulates, as far as I understand it, some stacks of cards which are falling. When the pitch of the spoken cards gets deeper, that means they are getting closer to the bottom, and the time is about to run out. If you have a dollar card in your hand, you have to place that card on a dollar as well. If that dollar card is at the top of other dollars, or to the left or right of it, your added card will start an explosion, blowing those dollar cards away. So the objective is to place cards which fits together, which will blow them away. Pressing the up arrow tells the card you currently have in your hand. Pressing the down arrow tells the card just below the card you're standing on. If you wanna hear what card is below the card you've selected to know if that'll start an explosion, you can press the down arrow. Pressing the left and right shift keys tells the cards to the left and right. I don't find this useful, because I just use the arrow keys. :) Pressing enter discards the card you have in your hand, and pick up a new card. That's used if your card doesn't fit at any places. Holding down option and using the arrow keys let's you explore the whole board. Well, I don't find this useful yet, but only find this waist of time. :) The only thing which confuses me is the point system. And, where are the coins you have to blow up? I mean, if I place 3 dimes on a row, they explode. So where are the coins I need to blow away? Sorry for my confusion. :) If I'm wrong on anything I've said here, then please correct me. Hi. The square connection which is called dvd optical input on your receiver can be connected to an Apple tv. The Apple tv does have a simular connection. I have my Apple tv connected to both my tv with a HDMI caple and to my surround receiver by the optical connection, and it's only music and Voiceover which comes out in my receiver if I don't turn on my tv. If I try to play a movie, it won't start until I turn on the tv. I don't know why, but that's how it works for me, so I can't say that'll work for you when you don't have a tv. By the way, this squared connecter is called Toslink. that's the name of the squared connecter. Hi Chris. If you choose automatically in the sounds settings, it mirrors the sound to both the toslink and the HDMI connection. If you choose optical output, it switches off the sound in the HDMI connection and only send sound out in the optical output. Someone asked to clear up any confusion regarding if a tv is needed or not: A tv is needed if you wanna watch movies. If you don't wanna watch movies but only listen to music, you can just plug it in your surround receiver. If you don't have the Apple tv hooked up to a tv which is turned on and on the right HDMI channel, nothing happens when you press play on a movie. Hi. I've been searching for the same, but can't find anything which is really good. The only app I can find is called Podcast player pro, which you can buy from the app store. But don't expect a nice app. It's a bad designed web-based app, or it seems to be. As I'm writing this, I've tried to stream directly from the app, but it won't work. Hi. I'm not sure on what the issue is. I just choose my scanner driver in the popup menu, choose convert to text and then the scanner drivers program starts. When I've scanned one page using this program, I can either press finnish which will transfer the scanned page into FineReader, or I can use the window chooser to get back to FineReader to scan an other page. Wehn I press finnish, it's being copied into FineReader and it automatically comes up with the save dialog. I'm sorry, but I don't think I understand what your issue is, unless your system works differently. Can you explain your issue more clearly and what you're doing? Weird login prompt appears on my Mac Mini
Hi all. Suddenly, my Mac Mini from 2009 comes up with a weird login prompt when I haven't used it for 10 minutes or so. When that happens, it has logged out of my account. It doesn't look like the normal login prompt which comes after the machine wakes up from standby or when you are installing an application. Voiceover only read two text fields. The first tekst field shows my username and the other text field I have to enter my password. Voiceover only read those as text field and secure edit field, but not as username and password. I also have a cancel button and a guest button, and if I press the guest button, the computer crashes. I have disabled the standby options in the power settings in system settings, and enabled that the computer should automatically log onto my acount when the system boots. But that weird login window still appears when I don't use the computer. I'm runnign a teamtalk server on the computer, and the server stops working when the window appears. Any thoughts? I'm running the latest version of Mountain Lion. Hi Chriss. You have to remember that there are many members on this list from the whole world, and not only the US or UK. therefore I wander why mails regarding sails are allowed on those lists, because those mails are only for those who are living in the countries which the sails person is willing to send the device to. Do you see my point? If I was selling my phone and said that I'm only willing to sell it to people in Denmark, all other people from other countries would say this was spam. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there are more than 700 members on those lists, and many of them are from the whole globe. So for that reason, I'll say that sails mails should only be allowed if people from the whole world would be able to buy the items people are trying to sell. Hi. When you have opened the dashboard, you can bring up the window chooser by pressing VO f2 twice. There, you can reach the window which will let you managed your widgets. To close the selected widget, you can press VO cmd f2. Hi. The easiest way is to press VO shift m on the shared folder from the Finder, go to the Dropbox menu and choose Browse on dropbox. You can also go to www.dropbox.com log in and choose shared folders and unshare you from there. Do not delete the folder or anything inside the folder because that'll delete the files from the others Dropbox as well. I'm not sure on what exactly you're searching for. If you enter the widgets menu, you'll get a list of installed widgets. Pressing enter on one of those will open the selected widget. That's all you can do from the menu. Oh I thought you ment just removing the widgets so they don't run. :) If you really wanna remove your widgets from your computer, you have to open up your library folder on your internal harddrive, open the folder called Widgets and just delete the widgets you wanna remove by pressing command backspace. Hi. You need to have an audio file playing while switching to an other audio output. Otherwise the sup menu is dimmed. Let me know if you still have trouble on doing this. garageband: Can't play an instrument using the computer keyboard
Hi. I'm looking into Garageband again after not having looked at it for more than one year. I'm trying to play the piano using the computer keyboard, but there's no sound at all. I choose the "grate piano" from the list of instruments, press command k to enable the keyboard, stop interacting with everything and then there's no sound when pressing the keys. If I press R, it starts to record. I have tried to switch to the keyboard window by using the window chooser, but that doesn't make any difference. The track is not muted or soloed. Any ideas about what I have messed up or what I'm doing wrong? Can I in any ways reinstall Garageband to make sure that nothing is corrupt? Hi. When the first page is scanned, you should be able to bring up the window chooser, select the previous window and scan an other page. Remember that the window which comes up when you choose scan is your scanner drivers interface and not Finereader, so if you go back to the FineReader window by using the window chooser, you can scan as many pages as you want before you choose Finnish in your scanner driver interface. That's how it works here with my Canon scanner. Hope that makes sence. Keep reparing your permissions until it shows no errors. You restart your ram by holding down: p, r, command and option right after you hear the start up chime. Keep holding those keys until the chime has heard the third time, and release the keys and it will boot up. Sounds weird to me. The window chooser works fine here, both in english and danish. It's really annoying that Apple have broke the command accent command on the danish keyboard. I wanna write to hthem regarding the issue, but I don't really know how to explain it to a person who don't know the danish keyboard. I don't think you can get any usb touchpad, but you can use an Iphone as a touchpad for your Mac.
