Re: transition from pc to mac
Hi Joanne, the best way to learn is to just roll up your sleeves and do it on a daily basis! don't put pressure on yourself by setting deadlines and obstacles. Just do it daily. when I wanted to learn MSDOS years ago, I just did it a little bit each day. Before long I was doing nicely. And you will have to do the same. Spend a little time with it each day. Learn the layout of programs. Learn what to do in certain situations. Study how you tot to one point. then try to figure out how to get back to the original point. Just a little at a time each day is the best way to go. All the best! Re: multiple email accounts?
Hello Kliph, You know, you can have a mailbox for each account. For example: I have onne for Verizon, Gmail and Apple mail. So you won't need to worry about which one to answer first. Just go to the different mailboxes and answer all the mail there. You seem to be quite active in your imac. If you're near an Apple store perhaps you would benefit from the "one-to-One" program. I think you would have a ball and I think you'd learn quickly. You can pearn different programs as you go. You can have as many lessons as you can handle. but it's all dependent upon whether there's an Apple store near you. All the best! Re: Mac Mini.
Hello, As an owner of a mini mac, I can safely tell you you have the adapter you need. All you need to do is plug the plug for the monitor in to the adapter you have. The process is quite simple in the newer Mac Minis that were manufactured beginning in mid 2010, which I assume is what you have purchased. The entire enclosure of the recent Mini is aluminum with the exception of the large round plastic "foot" that you will feel on the underside of the Mini. This plastic foot is actually a cover that can be removed simply by turning it counter-clockwise and lifting it off of the Mini. Assuming you have washed your hands thoroughly and are now grounded to prevent static electricity from damaging the internal components, you can feel around inside the body of the Mini and you will find the RAM modules. They are stacked on top of each other, so you will only feel one module at first. It is held in place by two metal spring loaded clips, one on each side of each RAM module. You gently expand these two clips and as you do so the RAM module will pop up slightly. You can then gently pull on it to fully remove it from it's socket. While you're doing this, you might want to feel along the edge of the RAM module where it meets the socket in the Mini. This might help you to understand how the RAM module fits into the socket, and you'll need to know this when you attempt to insert your new RAM modules because they can only be inserted correctly facing one direction. Once you've removed the first RAM module you can feel the second RAM module under it. It is removed using the same procedure. Incidentally, RAM prices seem to be dropping at the moment and, in fact, someone on another list posted a note saying that newegg.com has an 8 GB RAM kit on sale today for US $50, but I haven't verified this and I'm not sure if newegg.com is an option in your locale. Re: macbook keyboards
Hi Donna, When I was at the Apple store I looked at the Macbooks and I did notice the pro seemed larger than the others. There were several machines there. I wonder if you're near an Apple store and can get in and take a look! I thought the Macbooks keyboards were larger than the windows keyboards and the keys are larger as well. No doubt about it. Isaac - Original Message - From: "Donna Goodin" To: Sent: Wednesday, July 07, 2010 8:10 AM Subject: macbook keyboards Good morning, all, I have a sort of odd question. I have noticed, since getting my Macbook Pro last summer, that my typing on the Mac is a bit less accurate than on other computers. I've finally decided that this is due to the size of the Macbook keyboard, i.e. that it is just a tad too small for my fingers. I got the 13-inch Macbook, so am wondering if the keyboard is larger if you move to a larger model, particularly the 15-inch. Don't know if anyone can answer this, but I appreciate any info you may have. Thanks, Donna -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. They are exactly the same internal configuration but the micro loses the plastic surround making it considerably smaller. If you are daring enough you can cut any mini SIM down to micro SIM size. Anyway to answer the question about bluetooth, I use a Nokia BH905. Its a headset style over the head arrangement and supports A2DP and AVRC as well as standard headset protocols. Its a really nice headset with noise cancelling, a beautiful design and feels very solid. Unfortunately the iPhone and iPad don't support AVRC for remote control of play/pause/forward/backward. which is a pain but the biggest issue on the iPhone iPad and iPod is the resolution of the bluetooth protocol. It hasn't been complained about very much so I asume that most people don't notice. I don't have any measurements but i'd guess A2DP on the i devices is limitted to only 12KHz, maybe 16 but certainly not 22 or 44. Music through all bluetooth headphones that I've heard is tinny and limited in trebble. It isn't a limitation of the bluetooth protocol as if I pair them with my Nokia N86 or N95 they sound spectacular. I was really hoping Apple would address this issue in IOS 4 but I guess they haven't had enough complaints about it yet. Its very annoying though as I have a beautiful sounding headset crippled by apples drivers. In summary though the BH905 will do exactly what you want, they are solid and sound wonderful as long as you don't mind losing a little trebble. Re: Iphone and braille note apex
I believe you need to find the list of supported devices on the iphone. this is where the Apple people may come in handy. Do understand that I've never really done a thing with the iphone on my own. I don't own one yet. Yesterday was the first time I ever ooked up to one. Hello Sonia, I've just come from the Apple Store. I hooked up a brailleconnect12 to the iphine 4. Now it isn't easy to do this. there'are several steps that're not spoken. You really need the expert assistance of the Apple people. So why don't you let it rest a while and plan to go to your local Apple store and let them help you with it??? Just a suggestion. Obviously you're not getting something right in the setup process. I didn't try to do it alone. I had the Apple guys do it! It worked well. Hello Sonia, I have a braillenote mpower, a braillino notetaker and the brailleconnect12. I am finding that I am using my notetakers less and less. I can't pair the braillino with the iphone 4. Re: IOS 4.1, blutooth keyboard and the iPod Touch as a notetaker for school?
Hello Sandy, We already have an affordable braille display called "Refredhable Braille" from American Printing House for Blind for $1,600 with 18 cells. That's the most affordable I've seen yet! Isaac - Original Message - From: "Sandy Tomkins" To: Sent: Monday, September 13, 2010 1:19 PM Subject: Re: IOS 4.1, blutooth keyboard and the iPod Touch as a notetaker for school? Hi, I have been sending notes via email to an email list while I am on my holidays. The issue of the subject line containing the whole message is easily overcome if you just start your note with a suitable title and then press return a couple of times as if composing a new paragraph. This seems to work for me. When I haven't done this, I just make sure to take the cursor, double tapping when in the edit field, and holding down the backspace on lmy think outside keyboard, till I hear the empty box sort of sound that the iPhone makes when you have reached the end or the beginning of something. I really do think this will be tyhe way to go re note taking etc. Plus, there are programs like Readdledocs, which I do have, but haven't got to grips with yet, but feel sure it will make editing and moving docs between the iphone and a P.C./Mac even more efficient. At the moment, as I have not, and can't, supdate my iphone's os to 4.1 which should improve my control of the edit fields of the iphone via the keyboard, I am still having difficulty editing, but anticipate improvements when I get logged onto a good internet connection and can upgrade! As far as Braille displays are concerned, within the year we should see something really radicle and more affordable coming onto the market! All the best from balmy Italia! Sandy. Alllison, My braillino pairs easily and it holds the pairing nicely! We have no trouble with that one. It's the braillenote that we have trouble with. But you know the braillino has these tripple action keys? those drive me nuts at times. I don't like them. I wanted to pair the braillenote to see how it works. I may have to call HumanWare on this one. You will need to use your computer to load files on the braillino. so if you want to take it with you to the doc's office, you will have to load the files beforehand. So good luck with it! Re: pairing a braillenote with the mac?
Hi allison, I was wondering if because my braillenote is part of the dbc(deaf-blind communicator) had anything to do with the lack of pairing. I didn't know you had to put it in terminal mode. I'll try that next when the teacher and I have time. He's trying to get me setup to do email now. Hopefully, we'll be able to do this real soon. Your braillino has four nicad batteries. You can change your own batteries and your own software. but you have no speech! It has an olboard manual just like the braillenote, but not quite as intrusive. But you'lll enjoy it probably. Hi Isaac, THank you so much for your reply. I found that with the BrailleNote, you need to turn bluetooth on first, and then put it in to terminal mode. After that is completed, try pairing it again. THis is the only way I found that works. Unfortunately, the display on mine is going, and the battery is too. It requires a reset, now it won't pair at all. Some of the HumanWare staff have Macs. THey were very helpful when I called. Would you mind letting me know what happens? I'd be interested to see if you get the BrailleNote to work. I may have to call HumanWare on this one. You will need to use your computer to load files on the braillino. so if you want to take it with you to the doc's office, you will have to load the files beforehand. So good luck with it! Hi Rose, do you have any tylenol or Leave? I got a headache readin' your dissertation on MS Word! I don't really need a spellchecker! I honestly don't! If I have any typos it's because my fingers didn't press hard enough! I have Word97 on all my windows machines. I use it mostly to convert .doc files to text files for my notetakers. all I ever write mostly is grocery lists and letters and they're not fancy letters either! Plain text and straight to the point! I'll be doing the same with the mac! Rose, do you have stock in Microsoft? How many shares? how much are they going for today? About sixty bucks a share? I am guessing You sound like you went to business management school. I've never seen such a dissertation on an office suite before! I had to read it to the end. Not even Ester and Anne robbinson talk in such depth! Whew! I think I'll take four more tylenols! :) :) I am going to save this one! this is a keeper! Isaac - Original Message - From: "Rose Morales" To: Sent: Monday, September 27, 2010 8:15 AM Subject: Re: Microsoft Office 2011 and VoiceOver The problem with something like Notepad is that notepad can only write text files. This is fine if you're just looking to jot down a note or ten. Hence the name notepad, :). MS Word is designed to let you format your text. Now, one could use Wordpad, but that doesn't have a spellchecker. Furthermore, MS Word is able to handle some pretty advanced word processing features: indices, table of contents, table of figures, table of authorities, outlines, bulleted lists, subdocuments, styles, track changes, tables, charts, simple excel calculations and formulas, mail merge, envelope labeling, and probably more I'm not thinking of. WHile your average MS Word user might not even know half of these features exist, there are others who simply cannot live without them. Personally, having taken a course in Office, I can certainly appreciate the idea of MS Word for mac. An awesome word processor on an even more awesome OS? That sounds lovely. Too bad that won't happen for awhile. With that being said, let's look at some of Pages notable features: numerous preloaded templates, the ability to create custom templates, easy insertion of headers and footers, styles, track changes, mail merge, footnotes, endnotes, bookmarks, tables, charts, and formulas. And Pages has the ability to export not only to word documents but epub, rtf, PDF, and html. You can't save as .docx yet, which is a pity, but you can open .docx files just fine. I'm not saying all this to suggest that everyone immediately love Pages. We can all agree it lacks some features which word has. Honestly, my first instinct is to fire up Word when I'm doing some intense document writing and editing. And I'm a hard core Mac girl. For my every day writing, I use Text Edit, and I love it. I call it WOrdpad on steroids because Wordpad doesn't have a spellchecker, the ability to save to PDF, or the ability to implement basic styles. At any rate, what I am suggesting is that we as Mac users (those of us with Pages at least) step back and say, okay, Pages isn't word. But what can it offer me? Is there some word processing I could be doing in Pages which I previously only did in Word? And if we don't know the answer, why not try creating that document in Pages when we're not on a time crunch? We might just surprise ourselves. In an effort to remain objective, I will also take the opportunity to include this link in my post. Another work around, or step by step instructions on how to accomplish this task would be appreciated. Though if I can avoid dragging stuff around I'd prefer that. Thanks again all for the help. Hi Neil, Correct. If your in an application or web page and someone gives you the physical placement of an item, you can find it on the track pad which gives you the layout similar to what a sighted person sees on the screen. Just like on the iPhone. This leads me into my comment. I don't think moving your hand from a keyboard to a trackpad to a number pad necessarily makes you slower. For example, If I'm in iTunes and I want to reach an item using JFW I might have to tab 4, 5, maybe 6 times. If I know the layout of iTunes on a Mac, I can just touch that location on my track pad. If your in an environment where you have to work side by side with sighted people this can really clear some communication hurdles. I thought just like you when I first made the switch. "Why do I have to press 4 keys to accomplish the same task the only took 1 finger with Jaws?" And it annoyed me. But then I realized that the number of keys 1 must press doesn't have a direct relationship to speed and or productivity. I also didn't like the concept of interacting with elements. This is before I completely understood it's advantages. Again, I use iTunes as an example. Re: Isaac off topic
Julie, I understand what you're saying! I just bought another braille display and I am going to try to match it up with a Macbook for a friend of mine. I am going to need to use a usb to serial cable. It's going to cost some money though! Firrst I've got to get the unit repaired. then I have to try matching it up to the Mac with that usb/serial cable. But it's going to be a while cause I've got other stuff on the burner ahead of it. I've never tried this combo before but I've got a feeling it's going to work! This will all be from my shallow pockets. I am hoping to study the ipod touch next! then I'll worry about connectivity afterwards. So I've got so much to do with technology I won't be getting myself that ipod touch for my birthday. Maybe Christmas. I'll keep hoping... But we'd best get back to Macs or Cara will kill us! I enjoyed your post! All the best! I Use PC at work but at home I wanted a mbP. it was cheaper than the Dell I bought after Hurricane Katrina (OK I know computers have gone down in price in yes - 5 years). JFW and I were having some bumps in the road. New owners for Feedom Scientific I just do not know what the future holds and Apple has demonstrated a strong commitment to the off the shelf product. At risk of sounding like a advertisement I want to use it off the shelf. A year with my Iphone and playing with my other's computer and I thought it was worth the $$$. Then I bought it on a back to school special as he is taking classes (OK so I will likely help him just in case there is trouble... grin) and they threw in a printer which my other spent the day networking his computer to and a I touch which became the nicest birthday gift I ever gave my sister. I am not a computer person and can use my Mac to do most things. Two months into it I am in a better place than I was in 95 when I returned to undergrad with a PC and a new Windows screen reader. I have a lot to learn and this list has been much help. Isaac - much like a phone a computer is pretty standard these days. I wonder if as access becomes the norm if it will fall under "assistive technology" as in the Rehab act. Having just completed a job with vocational rehab (and yes vocational does mean employment in Louisiana) I am keenly aware of the pending adjustment. Sorry for the rant - but if I can buy a product that meets my needs without a third party application I will. Now once I land in my new home and new job which will likely have a desk, phone, chair, sofa and PC then I will have to ponder the more serious question of how much do I not want to use a PC at work. My immediate guess is I need the job enough to use whatever screen reader will work with whatever machine they provide. For items like braille displays I hope there will always be some assist. Having worked non profit, profit and government jobs they are an awful lot for me to expect my employer to buy. Re: Mac question
Hi Claus, The reason why I disabled Airport is because if I don't it will be searching for a connection and I don't have a connection that it needs to find at home. I have one in class. But when I leave class and go home, I don't want Airport searching for a connection and thus possibly messing up my connection to a wired network. Scott That is excellent! thank you for that. I am thinking of doing the ipod touch after I learn itunes. Isaac - Original Message - From: "Scott Granados" To: Sent: Saturday, October 23, 2010 12:52 AM Subject: Re: Anyone try the iPod 6th gen? Hi Isaac, Sure first, the Sprint overdrive is about 60 per month. That's pretty reasonable especially if you're in a 4G enabled city. The plan has unlimited 4G service so no cap, 3G is capped at 5GB per month. I commute over an hour each way every day so to me this is valuable time. If you don't travel much and already have broadband you might not be able to justify the cost. I really like the device though and get a lot of milage out of it. As for the IPod, I love the interface. The touch screen is very intuitive to use once you get the hang of it. Tracking of the movements is very good and it is easy to use one handed unlike many phones. With apps like live365, iI-Heart-Radio and many others you can stream all the audio you want in clean stereo audio instead of over the air. I also find I listen to a lot of content not available on the air either because it's treamed only or because it's outside the local area. The only thing I've used my standard radio for recently is listening to John Miller on the Giants radio network.:) My understanding is I can get an MLB app and get the same audio, I assume there's a fee for that. I have not tried this personally but plan on it next year. Things like the web browser are pretty good and most apps are accessible. How's that? Re: Microsoft Office 2011 period
Hello folks, Why are you folks wasting so much valuable time and bandwidth with Microsoft bashing? It doesn't change a thing! Will the moderators have to step in again and say let's get on with Mac issues and stop the Microsoft bashing? Besides, with as much money as Microsoft has, I find it hard to believe that a certain individual can buy them off with a million dollars or even nine million. What's nine million against thirty eight billion? Let's stop the bashing.. Isaac - Original Message - From: "Scott Granados" To: Sent: Tuesday, October 26, 2010 5:55 PM Subject: Re: Microsoft Office 2011 period Unm it's not Bill's fault though. A big part of the reason that Microsoft doesn't have native accessibility is the way a subset of the blind community handled accessibility and MS years back. There were a whole series of payoffs and backroom dealings that took place on behalf of some organizations who make money by selling 3rd party tools. Microsoft truth be told wanted to include a screen reader with the OS and make their tools accessible but found again a certain subset protesting on their front door as a result. (because they were paid off by a certain screen reader company founder to do so to the tune of 7 figures) This same subset still writes hit pieces against Apple today because they do not get a cut of the Apple accessibility pie. Don't think I defend Microsoft unconditionally, I generally hate their products and their developers come from the back of the class but in this case at least your anger is a bit misdirected. I won't detail the specifics here because it's only tangentially ontopic and it ruffled a few feathers of folks on this list who benefits from the status quo. finding files in documents?
Colin, Ah, I feel dumb today. I've got a file in documents I'd like to retrieve. I went to finder, I interacted with the sidebar table. then I found documents. then I found the browser. It said one item. Now how do I find the file? I feel so silly cause I can't find that silly file. thanks! thanks Colin! Re: feature suggestion for braille key assignments.
Erik, Interesting comments. I wish I knew more about all this, but I just bought a big bc40 the other day so I've got a bit of learning to do. but isn't the joystick already emulating the arrow keys? that part I am not clear on. Isaac - Original Message - From: "erik burggraaf" To: Cc: Sent: Wednesday, November 10, 2010 10:23 AM Subject: feature suggestion for braille key assignments. Hi, I'm just hacking my braille connect to try and maximize the controller options and make it more comfortable for me to use as a full braille controller. I want it to emulate my computer. For example, I have reset the joystick on the bc32 so that it performs the functions of the up down left and right arrow keys, as opposed to the standard move lest right up and down. Now, what I would appreciate and find most helpful is if I could have a new custom key dialog box added to the custom menu of the key assignments. I'm not really sure what to call this great dialog box, since custom is already taken by the menu, but it would work like this. You input a key on the key board, the up arrow for example. Then you have checkboxes for each of the command, option, control, and fn keys. You check the appropriate combination of modifier keys. I want command up arrow assigned to space+d1+d2+d3 for example. Command up arrow and command down arrow are the standard mac OS keyboard shortcuts to take me to the top and bottom of a text area such as this edit box where I am typing a message. I'm just typing along, not interacting or any of that nonsense and if I want to read what I've written from the top I can press command up arrow to go to the beginning of what I've just typed, and then I can either read line by line with the arrows, Or I can read on the display. So, I like command up arrow and command down arrow, and I just want to tell my braille controller that when I press space+d1+d2+d3, or space+d4+d5+d6, it means do that thing. I feel the same way about option up and down arrow, option left and right arrow, and control left and right arrow. Or how about tab, command tab, shift tab and command shift tab. I have fiddled with a lot of navigation key assignments that should emulate what I want, but the fact of the matter is, they all rely on interacting with each and every object in order to work effectively. I wouldn't normally interact with things more than %10 or %15 of the time, mostly scroll areas or html frames or some issues involving group mode on the web. Interacting with every single item on the screen to make it work defeats the power and purpose of interacting and so I only do when it's called for. In braille display world, I currently have to interact with every object I am working on to make it behave which is obnoxious and could be completely avoidable by allowing a braille controller to more closely emulate the computer. best, Erik Burggraaf User support consultant, One on one access technology support and training over the phone or in person, 1-888-255-5194 http://www.erik-burggraaf.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group.
