Intrigued to know what these are.

Ps: found them, interesting. I had a pair of specs with camera and sound

Anyone know of body cams similar to what has been talked about on
the news for police? Something that is acccessible and easy to transfer
videos to the Mac or iOS device?

Yes,
I notice the same thing. I am driven mad by mail showing up in notification

stick.

Calling with the mac.

2014-10-28 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
I must say that i am not very happy with this feature to be able to call on the
mac.
It works sometimes and today when i tried it with my logitech headset i could
hear my mom but she couldn't hear me.
I checked the settings so that my headset was set right and it was.
Also voiceover got a very strange voice during the call.
So i guess this is a bit to new and hopefully it will be better in future
versions of ios and osx.
The sms forwarding though works fine now.

If you open system settings and go to notices and interact with the table of

2014-10-28 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello Donna,

It would be nice to know that too. However, here’s what I did that worked but I
don’t know exactly how it worked.

Go mail prefs, view and tick classic view.
Go to system prefs, accessibility options and enable mouse keys. You should be
able to press option quickly 5 times. That later method doesn’t work on my
Yosemite system.
Now VO right arrow or left arrow, until you hear “Horizontal splitter“.
Press VO command F5.
Now attempt to click on that horizontal splitter.
Using the keyboard, trackpad, cursing it and nearly beating up the machine I
could not drag and drop the thing. I really don’t know what I tried and it
seemed nothing worked .
Now go back to mail prefs and take the classic view tick out of the checkbox.
Upon closing mail prefs, the pest had vanished. How where, why and when it was
triggered I don’t know.

A very frustrating experience.

Good luck.

2014-10-28 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hello there
There is a way to assign keys, but I'm not sure that one is going to work.
There is a table on there of ones that are already assigned. You have to go
into the voiceover utilities, go to broil, and then go to the assigned keys.

Yosemite: The ghost in the machine?

2014-10-28 Thread Mark Baxter
Ever since upgrading my MBP15 (built around 2008, 4G RAM), random things have
been changing, every time I put my Mac to sleep and wake it up again. For
example: Safari will not access my banking website (www.usbank.com), and shows
an empty HTML pane after I enter my password. However, I can log into the same
website with the same user name and password with my iPad’s US Bank app, no
problem. Every other page seems to load fine, but my download speed continues
to be low.

The next odd thing was that, when I woke my Mac this morning, VoiceOver
wouldn’t talk, nor did shutting it off and relaunching it help; I had to shut
off the mac and restart it to regain VO. When I did this, the system voice had
changed from Samantha to Alex, even though I downloaded the Samantha voice
upgrade. Very odd. One day, I’ll wake up my Mac and it’ll be talking in
Swahili backwards with a German accent.

Re: Can someone please post current directions for making the preview pane go away

2014-10-28 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Donna,

My Preview pane settings stuck when I upgraded to Yosemite, so, I’m not having
your same frustration. Here’s some instructions for you though that I posted
back when Mavericks first was released. Not sure how, or if they still work in
Yosemite, but it’s probably worth a try.

1. Go into Mail Prefs and select the Viewing pane.
2. Check to change to Classic View.
3. Close Mail Prefs.
4. Navigate to the Horizontal Splitter after the Messages Table.
5. Press VO-cmd-f5 to make sure the mouse is focused on the Splitter.
6. Press down on the Trackpad then drag downwards to the bottom of the
physical Trackpad then release. This could also be done with a mouse instead.

You will know that it worked because the splitter will no longer be right after
the Messages Table, it will be the last item at the bottom of the window.

7. Change back into Modern View in the Mail Prefs by unchecking the box, or
stay in Classic view if you prefer.
8. Close the Mail Prefs.

You will know that the Preview Pane is closed/hidden/disabled by navigating
around the Mail window and you will note a Vertical Splitter before and after
the Messages Column Group.

If it’s not sticking for you, try quitting Mail after getting rid of the
Preview Pane in Classic view. Once you re-open Mail, you can change back to
the Modern View, and the change should stick. At least it has for me numerous
times.

HTH.

Re: using a focus braille display with the mac

2014-10-28 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Joe,

You can only assign VoiceOver commands to a Braille display, or to any
commander for that matter. Cmd-q is a standard Mac command and not a VoiceOver
command. Using a Braille display to drive your Mac, you’ll need to go into the
menus and click the appropriate command.

Anne

Re: Can someone please post current directions for making the preview pane go away

2014-10-28 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Donna,

Whenever I’ve had to remove the preview pane using the trackpad, what I’ve done
is to press down on the trackpad with one finger, and stroke the trackpad
towards me with another finger. However, it may depend on your trackpad
settings in System Preferences. Here are my settings:

Point & Click: all checkboxes unchecked;
Scroll & Zoom: the Scroll direction: natural checkbox is checked, the Zoom in
or out checkbox is checked, the Smart zoom checkbox is unchecked, and the
Rotate checkbox is checked.
More Gestures: all checkboxes unchecked.

Obviously, you have to turn off Trackpad Commander to use the trackpad for this
purpose.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Can someone please post current directions for making the preview pane go away

2014-10-28 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Donna,

It looks like you missed the Horizontal Splitter when you performed the drag,
that would be why the file is on your Desktop. What happened was that the
message itself was dragged to the Desktop instead of the splitter being dragged
to the bottom of the screen. I did take a minute to try this with my own
installation of Yosemite here and the process does work as outlined. As Anne
mentioned, make sure that Trackpad commander is off when performing this task.
Also, make sure you do the VO-cmd-f5 to bring the mouse pointer to the
Horizontal Splitter, just trusting that cursors follow each other is not
enough. If you’re not sure if your mouse has properly focused on the
Horizontal Splitter, Interact with it first prior to the VO-cmd-f5 action and
this should ensure proper focus.

should be able to press option quickly 5 times. That later method doesn’t
 work on my Yosemite system.
Now VO right arrow or left arrow, until you hear “Horizontal splitter“.
 Press VO command F5.
Now attempt to click on that horizontal splitter.
Using the keyboard, trackpad, cursing it and nearly beating up the machine
I could not drag and drop the thing. I really don’t know what I tried and
 it seemed nothing worked .
Now go back to mail prefs and take the classic view tick out of the
 checkbox.
Upon closing mail prefs, the pest had vanished. How where, why and when it
 was triggered I don’t know.

 A very frustrating experience.

 Good luck.

Hey, while it might work, I would not recommend doing this. I had a K8 11
which I tried to use with the PC tablet, and the keyboard would
inconsistently stop functioning. I was told by rep at Logitech that because
of some time in the ways, it wasn't advisable to try to use keyboards and
are not compatible with the operating system for which they were intended.

Hi,

Regarding Kliphton’s solution, I believe that he is referring to the
Preferences in Mail itself, not System Preferences. Interesting solution
though. It works as we hope when in the Modern or Standard view for removing
Preview pane issues but not while in Classic view. One must still drag the
Horizontal Splitter down when Classic view is your preference. Thanks for the
fresh view Kliphton.

Re: fusion upgrade for yosemite

2014-10-28 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
Fusion 6 supports Windows 8 so you shouldn't have to upgrade just for
that. Actually, after reading through Fusion 7 improvements, the only
one interesting to me is power savings for laptops, but that hasn't
really been an issue for me.

Hi Kliff,

I found something that says list preview which I think is your setting.
Wouldn't have worked for me b/c I was using classic view, but thanks for the
suggestion. I'll keep it in mind should I change to standard view.

RE: Body cams

2014-10-28 Thread Rick Alfaro
Someone recently posted an audio boo about a body cam they purchased and were
using successfully. It was the Go Hero 3 White and can be found on Amazon for
about $200. It was supposedly very accessible and easy to use. Unfortunately, I
don't have that person's email address but his name is Kevin Reeves, a blind
musician. Perhaps with that info you can find him somewhere and ask him about
the camera.

Best regards,

Re: Can someone please post current directions for making the preview pane go away

2014-10-28 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Not sure why your items are appearing as MailBox lists. The MailBox items
prior to the ToolBar should just be titles or Headings announcing what Mailbox
has focus at this point in time along with the number of Unread messages in
that MailBox. Try Interacting with them and try determine if they are lists or
textual items. There should only be one actual MailBox list which is located
one VO-right of the Favourites Bar.

Re: Yosemite: The ghost in the machine?

2014-10-28 Thread Jeffrey Shockley

Hello,
I have also had problems with one of my Macs when putting it to sleep. I
am experiencing the same behavior when I wake it back up again. I can
get the VoiceOver sounds to play, however, no matter how many times I
try to toggle VoiceOver on and off, I get nothing, and I am forced to
reboot the machine to get VoiceOver back. My Macs are up-to-date on
everything. Sometimes, a permissions repair will help for a little
while, but, sometimes not. It's weird. I did not have this behavior in
Mavericks.
I have also had a problem with slow download speeds. What I did was to
go into System Preferences, then to Network, and then find Wi-Fi in the
list, click the Advanced Button, and under the Wi-Fi Tab, there is a
table. This table lists the networks you have connected to before. Once
you find the network you are connected to in that table, VO right until
you get to the "Remove Profile" button. Then, click that and tell it
that you are sure that you want to do this, as a confirmation dialog
comes up asking you if you are sure.
Then, click OK. Then, close System Preferences being sure to save your
changes.
Then, turn Wi-Fi Off, and back on again. Doing this will actually forget
the network. Then, find your network in the list of available networks,
and reconnect to it.

I did that, and it fixed the problem for me.
I apologize if I have forgotten anything, I am doing this completely
from memory, and do not have any macs here to look at to make sure I
gave the right directions.

I hope this helps some,
Jeffrey

Ever since upgrading my MBP15 (built around 2008, 4G RAM), random

(www.usbank.com ), and shows an empty HTML pane
after I enter my password. However, I can log into the same website
with the same user name and password with my iPad’s US Bank app, no
problem. Every other page seems to load fine, but my download speed
continues to be low.

The next odd thing was that, when I woke my Mac this morning,
VoiceOver wouldn’t talk, nor did shutting it off and relaunching it
help; I had to shut off the mac and restart it to regain VO. When I
did this, the system voice had changed from Samantha to Alex, even
though I downloaded the Samantha voice upgrade. Very odd. One day,
I’ll wake up my Mac and it’ll be talking in Swahili backwards with a
German accent.

Re: Yosemite: The ghost in the machine?

2014-10-28 Thread Mark Baxter
Thanks, Jeffrey; I didn’t think to do a forget and restore on the WIFI, but
removed a lot of networks I will never connect to again recently. I have done
about three permission repairs, and I, too, had no luck toggling VoiceOver
repeatedly, thus my shutting it down cold by holding down the power button til
it hard-crashed. VO works fine now.

your trackpad settings in System Preferences. Here are my settings:

 Point & Click: all checkboxes unchecked;
Scroll & Zoom: the Scroll direction: natural checkbox is checked, the
Zoom in or out checkbox is checked, the Smart zoom checkbox is

Hey, while it might work, I would not recommend doing this. I had a K8 11
which I tried to use with the PC tablet, and the keyboard would
inconsistently stop functioning. I was told by rep at Logitech that because
of some time in the ways, it wasn't advisable to try to use keyboards and
are not compatible with the operating system for which they were intended.

Re: Can someone please post current directions for making the preview pane go away

2014-10-28 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Strange indeed. If you are just using arrow keys, then the reason the Mailbox
is changing is due to keyboard focus. Those items will not usually gain
keyboard focus since they are not editable or modifiable elements. If when you
Interact and continue holding down your VO keys and the Mailbox still changes,
then I’m confused as to why you would have that many MailBox lists.

Phone calls not working on the iPad

2014-10-28 Thread Aleeha Dudley
Hello all,
I recently updated my iPad mini first-generation to iOS 8.1. I have been trying
to use it to make a phone call, but I have had no luck. Both devices are on the
same Wi-Fi network and are right next to each other, so it seems to neither be
a network or proximity issue. Anyone have any suggestions? I have turned Wi-Fi
off and back on on both devices.I have also checked to make sure that the
setting for cellular is turned on on both the iPhone and the iPad.thanks.

Re: using a focus braille display with the mac

2014-10-28 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hello Joe
Using a focus 14 with your Mac is not count time-consuming once you get it
paired. That's where I had the problem. You can use cord S to go to the menu.
That will get you to the quit option you were talking about, if you want to use
it that way.

Re: problem keeping the preview pain off in mail.

2014-10-28 Thread matthew dyer
Hi,

The preview pain is where the selected message is shown in a side pain in I
think the right side. This is useful for sited people, but if you are blind
you will nottes that when passing by a message, it is marked as read and this
is quite annoying if you are like me and you do not use it.

Re: Can someone please post current directions for making the preview pane go away

2014-10-28 Thread matthew dyer
Hi here is what I do to get rid of it all though it does not seem to work for
me.

Go into mail preferences to switch to classic layout which is found in the
view tab. Check the box that says use clasic lay out. Next close the
preferences in mail and navigate to the spliter that is found just to the
right side of the messages table. Now vo-cmd-f5 to bring the mouse to the
horizontal spliiter and with the track pad or mouse depend on what you have
drag your finger down from the top and this should get ride of it. You now
should be able to return to the standard view and the pain should be gone. As
I said before, I am finding that I have to do this everytime I open mail. If I
am forgetting something, please let me know. HTH.

Re: using a focus braille display with the mac

2014-10-28 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
Yes, and I have just had a struggle to get my Braille Edge 40 back onto my Mac.
Since Yosemite, much to my disappointment, won't let me have more than one
display, I have decided to take the Focus 14 off the Mac and put it on the
iPhone instead. In my case, when I am doing proofreading, I need two devices.
So, luckily for me, I can use hand off to put a Pages file on the iPhone with
the Focus 14 so I can do my reports without getting out of my braille file. The
Focus 14, in my opinion, works better on the iPhone although I did have it
working. However, I had so much trouble putting Braille Edge back on the Mac
that I think I will leave the Focus 14 off the computer for now. As I said, I
had it working, but my Braille Edge works better on my Mac.

Re: Calling with the mac.

2014-10-28 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
Yes it works both with facetime and skype.
However i come to think of one thing.
I have a network with one normal wireless and one which uses the 5 Ghz network.
Can this be a problem if for example the mac is connected to the 5 Gzh and the
iphone is connected to the primary one.
I didn’t think of that when i wrote my frustrated e-mail.
To be as clear as possible my dsl modem is connected to an airport extreme with
an ethernet cable.
I then have two airport express units connected wirelessly to the airport
extreme.
So this is my setup.

OT: Need Assistance for Blind Youth with Finding Accessible Audio Software

2014-10-28 Thread Christine Grassman
Hello all. I am attempting to help a 19-year-old who has a rapidly degenerating
eye disease who is interested in pursuing radio broadcasting as a career. He
is a Mac user. The school he would like to attend informed me that they use
Adobe’s line of products, and they maintain that they cannot be made accessible.

Could anyone with knowledge of this please write to me off-list:

1. Is this true? And
2. If so, is there comparable software out there which will do virtually
everything this young man is likely to need in his pursuits?

Thank you.
Christine

Re: Calling with the mac.

2014-10-28 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I’ve not tried it using that kind of set up. I’ve got a similar setup at home
though but have my Extreme using its Dual Bandwidth option instead of two
separate 2.4 and 5 GHz networks. It’s entirely possible that having them
broadcast in that manner could cause the problem. If your Airport Extreme is
at least a 4th Generation one, it should handle the automatic Dual Bandwidth
transmission. When in this mode, your Extreme will broadcast both a 5 GHz and
2.4 GHz signal simultaneously and maintain them as a single network, thus,
ensuring there’s no communications blocked between your iPhone and your Mac.
When the Extreme is in the Dual Bandwidth mode, both your iPhone and Mac will
connect to the side of the network that they need seamlessly. Hope this makes
sense.

Re: Phone calls not working on the iPad

2014-10-28 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Try these in this order. If the first doesn’t work, go on to the second, and
so on. At each step, confirm that you still have WiFi connections.

1. Restart your iPad.
2. Restart your iPhone.
3. Turn the feature off then on again on your iPhone.
4. Turn the feature off then on again on your iPad.
5. Turn Bluetooth on on both devices. Supposedly not needed but I've read
somewhere that it made a difference.

Now comes the more time consuming ideas.

6. Backup your iPad then Restore it. As long as you do your backup either to
iCloud or your Mac, you should be able to restore it right back to the way it
was before the Restore. It sometimes cleans up any confusion that the device
may have had.
7. Do the same for your iPhone.

The Continuity feature is working perfectly for me between iPhone and Mac, but,
I haven’t played with this feature yet on an iPad. If my wife allows me to
play with her iPhone and iPad, I may be able to test some of this.

Later…

Re: OT: Need Assistance for Blind Youth with Finding Accessible Audio Software

2014-10-28 Thread erik burggraaf
HI, Adobe has it’s own accessibility department. It’s not something I’ve dealt
with personally, but I would track them down and start with them.

If you know the exact software and version numbers, you could download
evaluation versions and test them with voiceover.

Protools is the gold standard for audio production on the mac. I would guess
that there is some video editing in this particular course as well which would
justify using adobe products such as audition.

Best,

Re: OT: Need Assistance for Blind Youth with Finding Accessible Audio Software

2014-10-28 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

The Adobe suite of products tend to use numerous custom elements that are not
visible to VO. The basic framework is present, but, the ability to Interact
and/or manipulate just about anything is limited or non-existent. We have
Adobe CS6 in a couple of our facilities and I have had no success playing
around with them from an accessibility point of view. Adobe is moving towards
their Creative Cloud which is quite an interesting product. We have not
decided if we’re going to go that way yet but the possibilities are there for
accessibility in this model, although, I don’t believe that much progress in
accessibility has been realized yet. In discussions with some Adobe
representatives, accessibility does seem to be a priority, I’m just not sure
that it is a priority across the board. It will take some major re-working of
most of their software.

In other words, Adobe is saying exactly the same as what their accessibility
