Hi here is what I do to get rid of it all though it does not seem to work for 
me.  

Go into mail preferences to switch to classic  layout  which is found in the 
view tab.  Check the box that says  use clasic lay out.  Next close the 
preferences in mail and navigate to the spliter  that is found just to the 
right side of the messages table.  Now vo-cmd-f5  to bring the mouse to the 
horizontal spliiter and with the track pad or mouse depend on what you have  
drag your finger down from the top and this should  get ride of it.  You now 
should be able to return to the standard view  and the pain should be gone.  As 
I said before, I am finding that I have to do this everytime I open mail.  If I 
am forgetting something, please let me know.  HTH.
