Hi here is what I do to get rid of it all though it does not seem to work for me.
Go into mail preferences to switch to classic layout which is found in the view tab. Check the box that says use clasic lay out. Next close the preferences in mail and navigate to the spliter that is found just to the right side of the messages table. Now vo-cmd-f5 to bring the mouse to the horizontal spliiter and with the track pad or mouse depend on what you have drag your finger down from the top and this should get ride of it. You now should be able to return to the standard view and the pain should be gone. As I said before, I am finding that I have to do this everytime I open mail. If I am forgetting something, please let me know. HTH.
